This is a work of extraordinary dignity, and gives a wonderful flavour of the roots of the liturgy, in Europe, and the Near East. James MacMillan understands that we were not asked to discard our beautiful tradition of the solemnity of the Mass,in favour of guitars and tambourines after Vatican ll and that we should in fact sing the mass, and not just sing AT Mass.

I've only been once. Beautiful place. It was the Feast of St George. The light came beaming down from the windows up in the apse, it was angelic. Lovely music from the choir too, I think it was a Palestrina.

"Tu es Petrus, et super hanc petram
    Aedificabo Ecclesiam meam,
Et portae inferi non praevalebunt adversus eam:
Thou art Peter, and on this rock
    I will build My church,
and the gates of hell shall not prevail against thee."
Of COURSE it's fitting liturgy. Can you not hear the demon hordes clashing against the gates, you can see Archangel Michael and the heavenly army in majesty and at the full height of power, and the victory over Hell? My goodness, have some imagination. Spirituality is drama. If it doesn't move you one way or another, you aren't listening. Also consider that those reacting against it are perhaps just as impacted as those reacting positively...

And I say to thee: That thou art Peter; and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
V 19, et tibi dabo claves regni caelorum et quodcumque ligaveris super terram erit ligatum in caelis et quodcumque solveris super terram erit solutum in caelis

This is a modern masterwork. Are we all to be deprived of new classical music? To those critics are there "too many notes" like the Archbishop told Mozart - thereby stifling creative genius? This piece will be performed by choral societies world wide (who can do it.) Please don't kill classical music.

@therealalimccabe An absurd and malicious comment. This brief, breathtaking work was commissioned from James MacMillan, possibly the finest composer in Britain today. Like Catholics everywhere, MacMillan accepts that this 'frail old man' is the Vicar of Christ and successor to the Apostle Peter, to whom Jesus said: "You are the rock on which I will build my Church." No , there is no irony in this great fanfare. The Pope is the Pope and "Tu es Petrus" acknowledges his unique role in our midst.

You can never accuse James MacMillan of being bland! The music of a passionate believer, love it or hate it. On a sadder note (no pun intended), I doubt I am the only one who finds the small minded sectarian point scoring I read in some of the comments deeply depressing. Being Catholic myself I cringe with embarrassment at the puerile disrespect directed at the Archbishop of Canterbury from some quarters. Thank God Pope Benedict and the Archbishop showed themselves above that kind of silliness.

In response to cgh21: It's effective in that it isefficacious. It stirs up emotions within us which focus our hearts and minds on the solemnity and sacredness of what is about to happen. (Isn't that a pupose of sacred music?) The music played straight after the gospel and during the blessing with the gospels was much the same - slightly ruined though by the pope - he should have blessed with the gospels much, much slower.
