- We show you how to replace a faulty brake light switch on a MkIV Jetta, Golf & New Beetle. A faulty brake light switch most commonly results in loss of cruise control and a flashing light on the dashboard. Luckily replacing the switch is a fast procedure!

Very clear and concise video. No messing about. It took my about 30 seconds to change the switch £6 from the local parts shop (15 mins to buy the part).. After being told to go him home by the police following me for 20 minutes on a Saturday night or be fined it certainly has helped me get back to work.
Thanks Cory. I've been having issues with the 02 Jetta TDI engine install in my 84 Vanagon. I believe the problem(s) is with the brake switch.
Thanks for pointing out the differences between the old version and the new 'green' version.
(The old version has a square body, the new version a round body.)
So important, because the old version requires that the pedal is pressed down during installation and is easily broken if not installed correctly.
The new version is much simpler to install.
Both versions are still crap designs though, typical VW switchgear.
I bought a switch exactly the same as yours for my vw t5 and the parts man in vw garage said I need a mechanic to fit as there is a special Technic to fit a new switch,.
Hi.
Great video, thanks for sharing.
I have the same error on my 02 Bora, but the brake light all work ok.
I understand that the switch transmits in 2 places, one is the lights, the other is the engine.
Could you explain to me what exactly is cruise control , how do I know if it is disabled and what are the risks of this control being disabled?
The new switch is by any chance the D model?
I read on some forums that the latest is the one mentioned above, and it replaces all the ones before it.
Thank you in advance for the reply.
Keep up the good work.
Regards.
Thanks for this. Worked a treat & saved me a fortune..
Is there a video for changing the brake light switch for a 2013 vw cc
do you need to reset after installing new brake light switch in order for lights to work?
Cheers for this video. Simple enough when you know how, but as I didn't have a scooby, very helpful. 👍
I have a question and hope you can help. I have a 2013 vw cc that is stuck in park. I am military and have been gone for awhile. Now that I'm back the car will not move. The brake lights work though. Do you think this is the brake light switch?
hey mate i have a 05 vw transporter

will you have to remove the fault code after replacing the switch? or should it remove by it self?
Excellent men I appreciate !!! keep posting videos
any tips on my 06 jetta 2.5 problem? my brakelights wont turn off at all. might be an electrical problem but im not sure. ive replaced the brakelight switch twice and it now has the oem brakelight switch in. still my brakelights wont turn off
I did the switch for my 02 passat and now the air bag light is on and it will only drive in lo gear. does that mean the switch broke and I should get is it replaced again. the switch I received was white and looked just like the one I removed?
Hi 2008 Jetta s, brake lights always on when ignition on. No cruise control. Automatic, shifts in/out of gears fine. Saw another video where brake light switch was near master cylinder. Is mine under dash? Would appreciate any help. Thanks.
I have an Infiniti QX4 with brake lights stuck to ON...I had to pull the fuse. Hope I can figure out where this switch is in my car.
I just purchased this switch for my 06 jetta mk5; during the install process I found no switch on the bracket. Where the heck is my switch located? I having similar discribed issues and would like to replace it. Thanks.

hi!good day! just wondering how about the ´glowplug light´on a dasboard blinking all the way and it´s say´s ÉNGINE WORKSHOP FAULT´..i have a vw touran 2005 model..i have been on a autoshop and they say it can be the ´brakelight switch ´sending some fail codes on a dashboard..but the worse, the auto mechanics keep on saying that..´this thing maybe the problem,or that thing maybe the problem´...i paid nearly 400 bucks to search what is wrong with my car but i found out that they cannot pin point what is the real problem on the car.maybe they are trying to rob me on other way,,please help..thank you in advance..
I followed these instructions and now my brakes stay on while driving. I can barely hit 30 mph. Thoughts?
thanks man .....solve my problem
gonna try and see if this solves my problem! Stupid tail lights don't work and all the fuses and wires are fine.
toorawsteven Good luck, hope it helps.
awesome video, glad I found it. The brake light switch I bought today for my 2008 SEAT Ibiza 6L is black though. V 6Q0 945 511. The switch is down in the car at the moment, so reading that off the invoice, which doesn't say if it's an A, B, C or D version. Will the same apply? Been battling to find out how to do this.
Thanks.
James Rogers PS, it's right hand drive (Same as Polo 9N apparently)
James Rogers Sorry, we don't service Ibiza's, so we dunno!
IDParts.com I replaced my switch and light epc still on.. Now what do I do
why are there 4 pins??
the 2 are the ground and voltage wire...which is the role of the other 2??
@@cmmartti I think there may be two. My car has started throwing the glowy worm but the brake lights still appear to be working fine. I had it replaced before under recall but I guess it's time to go ahead and do it again. I'll tear the old one apart when I have it replaced.
dzięki
Will this work on an audi a6 2003 awd 2.7 Quattro as well ???? thank you....
+drowization I have no idea! We only service diesels.
Ok, thank you :)
my 2004 vw polo had no brake lights and error code 16955 (brake light switch implausible signal (Fail)), got the switch out (black and slightly smaller than the one in this video). switch cleaner on contacts where I could and managed to open it up slightly to get inside. Tried testing it like in the video (4 pin, 2 continuity, 2 open, nothing changed when I tried to push it). Put it back on, lights constantly on now. Noticed that the pin on the stitch wasn't even reaching the brake pedal, out of frustration just pulled the bastard to see what would happen and the pin clicked out like it was on a sliding pinion or something and retracted to the right level when I let the brake back up. Turns out also the switch will not work (I.e cannot be tested, will not switch) unless it is twisted into the mounting bracket. When you untwist it it retracts the lever inside itself presumably locking the switch closed. If you are struggling to budge the switch left/right out of the mounting bracket try pushing or pulling on the pin.
Edit: don't push or pull too hard be firm but fair I accept no responsibility if you break it. this was 1030 at night and I had to drive to work at 6 the next morning and my brake lights were permanently on even with the key out the ignition.
Another edit it was a different video where he tested it
does this work on 2001 cabrio?
akextremerickert Not sure, but it's probably similar.
Well obviously. It's the rear brake light switch. Cuz my Jetta doesn't have a front brake light switch. Secondly you should show how to replace an o e black switch instead of an upgraded green switch.. if the same process applies to an oem one and you should specify that in your video as well
after taking out switch how do you tell it was faulty?
We can only tell if it is faulty when it is in the car - no brake lights, no cruise control are both symptoms of a failed brake light switch.
And, with automatics, the shifter will not move from Park or Neutral into Drive or Reverse without some trickery. That's a big problem and is what tipped me off(and flashing glow plug dash light) to replace this part.
good tutorijal
Wow so i probably replace my 4 glow plugs for nothing, i should of look at that video before :P
Gewußt wie danke
The most important part of the video is all blacked out, very poor.
