Why I chose 450 Bushmaster - Zábava
I am always fascinated by CZcams channels that are really good like this one and then they just disappear,It’s been three years since your last video. Hope all is well I enjoy your content.
Same. This was one of my favorite channels.

Just ordered a .450 bushmaster upper today in preparation to help my aunt with her hog problem down in Texas. Can't wait to try it out!

Love that ejection pattern in the slo-mo...right on the money.
I live in Iowa as well this video was very helpful for me
Great info glad to hear about this new round to me, I may look at getting an upper down the road. In some of the east coast states you will have shots of 250yds or closer for deer so this round would work pretty well here.
If you do get into reloading, you can use the 450B bullets in 45 Long Colt loads as well. We have a similar situation with seasonal laws in Indiana, so it's became a good option here.
Yep, briefly entertained the idea of the Socom but figure since I load .460S&W it’s easier to just stock one diameter and use the projectiles in both cartridges.
Plus in the bullets weights I’m interested in using in a big bore AR, the .450BM has the pretty much the same performance as the .458Socom does anyway.
I don’t have much desire to launch 500gr+ or subsonic stuff, so any advantage the .458 offers is lost on me.
sixtofive i will be using one this fall as well...will be fun to get out there with an AR. Glad Indiana has used some common sense.
Excellent channel, especially your 450BM build. Could you maybe put together a summary video of your current 450BM setup? It looks like you have made several iterations over different videos: buffer spring, mags, muzzle break, optics, etc. It'd be handy to get a recap of parts that you found to work best with 450BM so we can use them for our own builds! Thanks!
Love your vids my dude! Very informative and interesting to me.
Thanks for watching!!!
I haven't seen you on in awhile....I was just curious about single and duel stage triggers for hunting and target shooting...You're much respected and appreciated to me. Thank you.
Crazy thing about 450 is that it is pretty effective even out of pistol barrels. I saw a video chronographing and gel testing 450 bushmaster out of a 7.5 inch barrel and it still has over 1300 pounds of energy with a 300 grain bullet.
Thanks for watching, you've been shortlisted among the winners for the ongoing Giveaway contact address above🆙🆙
JUST bought a ar 556 450 bushmaster TONIGHT...i missed a nice 10 pointer from 150 out with my mossberg and a buddy offered to sell me a box new bushm....cant wait til next season....iowa 2nd shotgun was rough this year with the nice weather...most timbers we pushed were dry...long shots all week
Well done!
Now the one thing odd in my town is stores stock 450 bushmaster and before I looked bought .458 socom, because I thought that would be more popular. I'm going to reload now. The 450 bushmaster is a lot cheaper per bullet, but is very limited in bullet grain weight vs what you can do with the .458 socom . Though in reality .458 socom doesn't have enough case capacity for the 5 or 600 grain bullets, and I would think the same could be said for the .50 for long range hunting, if the AR-15 platform is limiting choices for round. As far as limiting that's been said to be another gray area with .458 socom. Magazine laws could possibly severely limit the capacity if they say the 10 round .458 is a 30 round magazine for other calibers and is illegal in some areas. A huge problem in this country is legislators that don't know shit about something pass laws while listening to people that know even less.
450 bushmaster has 100fps more, 160 ftlbs more energy, and it's about 40% cheaper for bulk full power stuff, and shoots flatter. I see no reason for the 458 socom anymore
Correct the 458 socom does not make sense since the arrival of the 450 BM
I don't know where you got your stats from i own all three and can tell you that the 450 bushmaster has the least amount of energy
You must be a fan of 450 bushmaster as I said i have all four and am somewhat neutral, just commenting that shooting them the 450 bushmaster is clearly inferior to the 458 50 wolf and definitely 500 auto max take a look at Kentucky ballistics big bore pine box test
Norris Dillahunt Jr overall all rounds are a good choice, there really isn’t much of a difference between all 3 rounds since all of them were designed to be hard hitters at short to medium range. Yeah there’s going to be a slight performance difference, but the cheapest rounds out of all 3 is going to be the bushmaster
@@norrisdillahuntjr4570 actually the ballistics favor 450 over 458 and 50B. 450B does have the most energy of all AR-15 big bore cartridges.
A lot of people complain about only being able to use pistol bullets in the 450 Bushmaster. I can shoot all the .452 bullets and use a sizing die to size .458 down. I can also shoot muzzleloader bullets which are what I mainly use.
I'm shooting 300gr ftx at 2120fps. I just killed my Idaho moose with mine. 260 yards one shot, clean through.
The biggest benefit to the 450 Bushmaster is that it is becoming a very common round in stores and you have rifle options (bit fuddy so I'd rather have a bolt action and wood stock for hunting).
Ultimately, I probably would have went with the 45 Raptor or the 50 Beowulf if it wasn't for the ammo availability.
I order all my ammo online so it doesn't matter to me, but yes the 450BM is readily available on store shelves more so than both 458 and 50B especially in states that allow straight-walled cartridges for hunting.
I have some 300 BO AR's so just wanted to round out all cals I may want to shoot and have for my AR's. I. definitely want to get 224 Valkyrie for longer range shots and looking at 350 legend as well. I like the concept of having a few AR rifles and then all you need to do is get Upper Receivers to increase your collection for hunting or just range shooting.
The 450 actually has better ballistics than 458 or 50B in all facets. And ammo is cheaper.
thanks you just solidified my choice.

That's cool to watch the ripple as the bullet travels.
Called a vapor trail. Search vapor trail videos on CZcams, amazing to see.

knew little of .450.... nice video!
At 2:00 you can see the steep arc and the vapor trail lobbing them in at 300.
That new WINCHESTER 350 legend would be a very cool AR platform TOO
Sorry didn't realize some others have said the same thing
VAhunter1000 I’d like to give one a try.
What scope / optic do you recommend for your Bushmaster? You had an interesting setup on one on this video. Thank you
The 450 as it stands is only loaded to 80 percent capacity.. the 458 and beuwulf is at 100 percent. It has to do with the chamber pressure of the AR. In a single shot or bolt action, you can load the 450 the same as the 460 s&w.
At 1:24 you can see the bullet literally ripple air as it moves into the target in lobby-like trajectory. Looks so crazy.

Great video. Please keep'em coming. Quick question. What is your opinion on .224 Valkyrie? I saw the article on AR build junkie. I've liked the looks of it but still doing research.
There were some early kinks with the 224V, but I believe they are worked out or getting worked out. I have one and will continue to shoot it once it warms up and will also likely build a heavier and shorter barrel profile upper or complete rifle of my own too. I think it's great and was just going to point you to that AR Build Junkie write-up with James Gilliland who believes it's the best cartridge to hit the AR15 platform and I have a very hard time disagreeing with that despite all the naysayers who in my opinion are simply far less experienced in shooting than those who dig it.
I have found .458 does have issues in certain mags, which would require some modification. I went with .458 due to being able to buy the same bullets as .45-70. Also the 500 grain subsonics sounded like fun. The one thing about .450 BM is you can find it on the shelf.
0 also, 452 bullets have thinner jackets than 458 bullets do. So the bullets will normally expand at longer ranges.
A factory 450 with the FTX will still expand at 400 yd
@@russr that's an interesting point. Some tests on that would be cool. I am going to see how the hollow points expand in what would normally be used in a trapdoor Springfield. I reload for both so it will be fun to mess with.
I use a sizing die to size .458 bullets to .452 so I actually have a larger bullet selection than the socom guys.
I'll buy your brass esp if I'm stationed in Iowa next year.
The fact that we can see the rounds got trail curving down to hit the target is wild. What distance is that?
Lance what barrel length do you use on your 450 ???? Great vids
Both 450 and 458 work better when changing followers in the mag. I use standard military mags.
alot of companies making ammo for 450bm - defender, precision one, hornady, winchester, federal, great lakes, hsm, black butterfly, steinel, polycase, underwood and buffalo bore
They now offer 305 grain subsonic .450 BM. Got a couple boxes on the way to test. Then I gotta get a suppressor for my .450 AR.
Good video,to your knowledge, does the 450 Thumper come in left handed version.
Thank you for this report.
I use the 450 also but didn't go with semi-auto fire. Picked up a CVA Scout V2 450 Bushmaster with 25-inch barrel single shot break-action.
There are some great 450BM bolt gun options out there that I will likely get into as well in the next couple years.
@@Highjak86 hey man what happen to y’all this channel is to big to just sit like this no one’s using these subs
If you don’t mind me asking.... is that the matsel bridge shooting range? Iowa native asking, looks nice and I know they rebuilt it a few years ago.
Highjak86 is correct ~ .458 SOCOM great for those that reload, especially .45-70 Gov't, and feeds better in a surplus G.I. aluminum magazine.
.458 SOCOM with it's heavier bullets would be better used in Alaska for the bigger critters here = so it still has s-o-m-e use.
.50 Beowulf is for bragging rights / fat wallets (to each their own) as the other 2 other .452 (pistol) & .458 (rifle) cartridges are quite good.
*.450 Bushmaster is a VERY good Lower48 option* + for those that reload .45ACP / .45 Colt / .460 S&W / .45 Schofield / .45 Cowboy Special! Forgot to add .454 Casull as well....
I need to get mine out now that it's all put together. I went with a Bear Creek 18". So equal chance it will shoot very well or very crappy. Then again it was $90 for the barrel.
Yeah, the BCA uppers seem to be hit and miss. I keep hearing of what I feel like is about half of them having to go back to BCA to have the gas port enlarged or torn down and drilled out by the owner. Let me know how it plays out.
It for the money? I’d deal with the chance of a little “work”
@@Highjak86 I have one, and yes I had to drill out the gas port. After that it's ran fine. Accuracy is quite good, 1-1.5moa.

What kind of mags do you recommend for a 450 bushmaster
i need to build one for hunting in ohio i use a 44 mag marlin now and it works great but 450bm looks sweet
I'm in Ohio too and used to own a Henry (steel frame) 44 mag., which was awesome for deer hunting. I'm looking into purchasing the Ruger MPR in 450 Bushmaster, for coyotes and deer. I'll be reloading for this cartridge and using the 225 gr. polymer tipped bullets.
I'm Ohio too. 357 mag has been my favorite for a long time. I had a Marlin in 44 and liked it just fine, took a doe and whatever plain soft point really impressed me. I couldn't get past the buckhorn sights and wanted 357 lever. Got a single shot 44 cva. I love those cvas and got a doe with it, headshot. I liked the 44 but just got a 450 cause I must admit I like the idea of hunting with ar. The day after I purchased, I found out about 350 legend. Now that's a round I'm excited about
WHAT MAGAZINE DID YOU USE OR RECOMMENDED?
What barrel threads do you have and what muzzle brake worked best for you
What app are you using for your grouping screen shots.... also its been a month man whats going on!
Im from Iowa. If we could shoot tapered cartridges thete IS ONLY ONE...3006. Specifically designed to kill anything it hits.
What is the limit on number of rounds you can have in your gun in iowa during deer season?
I get 20 loads pretty easily on a piece .458socom brass. The shoulder is so small and the brass gets worked so little you don't run into all the trimming and annealing issues like high pressure larger shoulder rifle brass does. Lot of bullet choices from 45-70 bullets to .458socom bullets from cast to jacketed, 100gr to 600+gr. Can roll crimp if I want to without affecting headspace, no special stab crimp dies required. Thankfully brass price and ammo price have slowly been going down. Though you can still get factory .450 bush cheaper.
How have the primer pockets held up? I've noticed that that seems to be the first thing to crap out on brass from what I have loaded so far.
That beard tho!!👌

and for that reason... im in.
Hey lance I’m not sure if you know anything about American Defense scope mounts but I have a 16 inch BCM SOCOM upper with a A2 front sight in carbine length and I’m not sure witch scope mount to buy from ADM or if it really matters Iv been looking at the AD RECON 30mm and I’m putting my PA ACSS 1X6 in it. Any help would be greatly appreciated thank you
What primary Arms scope do you have in your .450? I want one for mine
Did you say what twist your barrel is for the 450??
I'm thinking about doing a .350 legend for deer season here in Ohio. It utilizes a standard 5.56 Bcg so just need a barrel
That's a good new option as well. I'm curious to see how it performs in the long run. .350L has the advantage when it comes to velocity and shooting flatter.
The 450 is going to be much harder hitting at a distance.
If you're hunting any open fields, I would still go with the 450. I've gotten two 200-yard shots and it dropped them like a rock
Oh my Lord, I found out about the legend like a week ago right after I bought the 450. I'm so excited about that round. 357 mag is my favorite and I was going to go the 357 Max route. Can you use ar mags or will they be full capacity with mod? I'm ready for that round
I'm looking for a rifle for white trail at 250 to 350 yards. I really enjoyed my dad's 30-06 but I can't find ammo. I'm wondering if a 450 is good without over doing it
What's the muzzle brakes on the two rifles in the video
wonder if normal .45 pistol bullets can be loaded in the 450 bushmaster cases?
News update. I just verified you can now use the 458 SOCOM in Iowa. I got that directly from a rep of the IDNR. The new rule is ANY cartridge between .350 and .500 whether straight walled or bottle necked is allowed. Even the 45-70
How does this work for pushing/posting or would you stick to a shotgun
Hi Lance.
Just purchased my 1st 450. Bushmaster will the 223 magazine work
What part of Iowa are you in I’m in the same state?
I live in Ohio. We have the same laws regarding gun season. I’m looking at this cartridge for the same reason. Right now I’m juggling this vs a 444 Marlin. Between the two, it may just come down to which rifle I can get the best price on.
you need to stand up to your government and demand change to FUBAR caliber laws.
I can find .450B all day long in southern nevada…. Haven’t seen .458 since before the faux plague, and I’ve only seen one box of .50Beowulf since the faux plague started….

450 Bushmaster: System Overview & Analysis of Practical Application.
Is this a requested video?
I am on the fence on getting a .450 bushmaster for hog hunting. Is there a significant difference between felt recoil from a 12g shot gun or .300 win mag and the 16 or 18 inch Bushmaster? Would you go 16 or 18 inch barrel and is ammo available at big box stores. Thank you great vid!
After watching tons of videos and reading tons of articles on several of the "big bore" AR calibers, I chose the 450 BM for my future hog hunts down South. I was mainly between the 450 and 458 and ultimately it came down to ammunition availability and cost. The 450 isn't a wildly popular round in South Dakota but the 458 is essentially non existent. I know I'd have an easier time finding 458 in Texas for the hunts but I want to be able to shoot up here. That coupled with seeing the power of the 450 on hogs made it an easy decision for me.
The Bushmaster was made for hog hunting. The 450 hits like a sledgehammer and is fun to shoot. Ammo is easy to find especially online and there is a wide variety available. I generally use the Hornady Black and have hade great results, but I am going to try out some Black Butterfly "Screamer" rated at 2750 to see what it will do. I use an 18" from BCA (shoots great) and have a Fab Defense "GL shock" butt-stock to tame the recoil.
What’s the specs on the rifle I’m the video?
Accuracy wise and ballistics wise, and if you know what you're doing with your gun, the 450 is easily good out to 400 yd for whitetail.
At 400 yd it still has more energy but most pistol hunting calibers do at the muzzle. And it still has the velocity on to expand the FTX.
I've dropped two deer at 200 yd so far with zero issues and complete past threes on the bullet.
Also it should be noted if you're reloading and your reloading for a bolt action only, you can load the 450 Bushmaster much much hotter.
The specs for factory for 50 are designed to be used in an AR-15 and to minimize bulk trust, so they're only loaded to 30,000 PSI, when loaded for a bolt action you can load them to the same spec has any other similar cartridge example 460 Smith & Wesson which is around 60,000 PSI Max
With my hand loads in my Ruger bolt action I am able to gain over 200 ft per second compared to factory loaded ammunition. This puts it at the same speeds as the 45 raptor and will also increase the distance the cartridge will expand out to a little past 450 yd
Since the Ruger bolt actions use .308 length mags (as opposed to AR15/micro length mags), can you load .450BM long? Wouldn't that be .45 Raptor (AR10 action) at that point?
I am in Texas (50 miles east of Dallas) and I see 450 Bushmaster ammo on the shelf. I don't see 458 Socom on the shelf. I have an AR Lower and I am trying to decide what upper I should obtain to go with the Lower. Is a 20 inch barrel for the 450 Bushmaster a lot better than a 16 inch barrel?
Longer barrel usually means more velocity..
Where did you buy those 450 mags? I haven’t been able to find any bigger then 4 rounds .

forget about these fudd rounds. Go get you a .300 blackout with subsonic ammo and suppress it. That rig is whisper quiet indoors and will put down any intruder out to 200 yards. Also doubles up as a 150-yard whitetail slayer using supersonic ammo.

Im currently building a 450 Bushmaster AR platform 18in .. where did you find mags and what is your optics
2A Dave don’t know if you found a fix for the mags yet but I shoot .450 and .50 Beowulf take a standard metal GI mag remover the floor plate and sand the hump down flat. All 10 rounds will fit and runs great. That’s what I have done it’s cheaper than buyin new mags 👍
Thank you I'll give it a shot 👍. Those mags are so expensive
Hey fellow Iowa 450BM hunter here. What mags are you using? Looks like the black aluminum 450BM ones but what are the FDE ones? I've had a hard time trying to find poly mags that will work in my 450BM.
Bushmaster brand 450BM specific aluminum mags from Brownells and Lancer 20round 223 mags.
Just use a standard 556 mag. It works even with the 556 followers.
.458 Socom and 50 Beowulf are too slow. Don't even worry about energy, 458 goes too slow to do anything with it. It'll punch a hole in pretty much anything, as it was designed, but it doesn't even go faster than 2200 fps.

Boom #1 450bm
You the man
Shoot, I was actually really curious why you went all the way to 450 bushmaster over a 300 blackout? It seems a lot of guys are using 300 effectively, and I’m in the process of deciding on an AR pistol for whitetail hunting.
450 is powerful 300bo is not
300 BO is much cheaper to shoot and will definitely put a white tail down up to 150 yards. I personally wouldn't stretch it to 200 yards though. I just don't feel it has enough energy.
Please set a good example for the shooting community and new shooters. Always use eye protection.
do you discuss bolt longevity issues in any videos i may have missed?
Bolt longevity in general, no. It gets mentioned a few times in videos now and then like this one when we talk about 'parts service life' though.
Bolts really are not an issue. Rarely you see a broken bolt lug or extractor but it is not common. Usually when one breaks it is low in the round count, thus a flaw in the part is suspected. The ammo costs on these cartridges is up there to a point where when you do the math the cost of a bolt even if it only lasts 2k rounds (for discussions sake) is very small in comparison.
I doubt that you will have many problems. Yes, the larger case headed cartridges are typically more likely to break due to the thinner walls on the bolt face.
I say that I doubt it, because it’s not like 7.62x39mm. .450bm at $1/rd will probably last a long time due to the lower number of rounds / year that you will probably shoot. Also brass extracts a lot better than steel cased ammunition.
People have had bolts break on 7.65x39 builds, but that is partly due to the steel cased ammunition. It’s mostly due to the number of rounds fired, the firing schedule, and the cleaning frequency.
7.62x39 guy “My bolt broke after only 600 rounds!”
Well you were running the cheapest junk that you can buy through a gun that it wasn’t designed for. You went through that 600 rounds without cleaning your rifle. The cheap ammunition gummed up your chamber and receiver extension, and your bolt broke when you tried to mortar a stuck case free.
@@Highjak86 thanks. sorry i overlooked discussion point in this vid. as you may imagine i had the 7.62x39 caliber/bolt in mind when i asked.
@@patrickc1508 thanks. you likely guessed i had the 7.62x39 in mind when i asked the question.

when you stop electing democrats who've never killed a deer in their life, but seem to think they have the authority to write your caliber laws.
What barrel length do you recommend for hunting 16 or 18?
There is about a 100 fps difference

Lance, why not .44 mag, .45-70, or even .357?
contrabassbob 45-70 isn’t available in the AR15 frame. 44mag and 357mag seriously lack the energy and range as compared to 450 Bushmaster even in their long barrel forms.
There is a company making a 45-70 ar prob pricey but its there
