  • In this video I breakdown practical differences between Sony 24GM and 20G from a perspective of a wedding photographer. Sony 20G feels like a smaller brother of 24GM and it's also 500$ cheaper - but how good is it? Watch the video to see the photo samples!

    I've been shooting 35+85 for the last 9 years, and in my experience the 20mm it's the perfect compliment to that setup. 24mm is just too similar to 35mm. For the dance floor, the 20mm is glued to my camera. I also use it a lot in different part of the day, even for portraits. The key is to put your subject as close to the center as possible. If you try to use it as a 35, the perspective distortion will kill you. If 35 is the safe and boring lens, the 20 is my special fun lens.

    • @TheJoejoez
      @TheJoejoez Před rokem +2

      Yeah I'm thinking that also...and I agree that 24 is already really tough and a bit too close, unless you want to do 24/35/50/85...but I also skip the 50. ... 35 I can do almost any typical shot. This was a good video as I mostly shoot people plus video work, and not landscapes/astro. Most 20mm reviews are the latter... think I'll get the 20 to do the wide end of my 35/85 I already have... have a 24-70 already so having that bit extra will be useful sometimes.

    I’m leaning towards the 20mm (20,35,85). I do more video than stills and active stabilization pushes the 20 towards 24mm once the active stab crops in. So, it’s the 20mm for me. I have the f1.4 in the 35mm since that’s my sweet spot! :-)

    I tried a lot of diffrent gear for my wedding photography and developed to an only primes shooter. Last year I bought a 24GM but sold it after one year of usage. Maybe you think I am crazy, but I am so much in love with 28mm! For me it is just the right allrounder, 35mm feels for me (especially inside) often to tight and a 24 definitly to wide for general stuff and people. Usually I like to be close to the business and 28mm is for me the widest prime I like to use for people . I hope so much, Sony will develope a 28 f1.4 GM, but until I am using FE 28, 55, 85 and for the realy wide shots a Voigtländer 15 f4,5 III (still have a 35 f1.4 Voigtländer Classic for funky stuff with crazy flares, but just as add-on lens)

    One thing that you did not mention when considering focal length, is that new Sony cameras will crop in, in some modes to compensate. This is something I have thought about when buying E-mount lenses, because I just purchased a Sony A74.
    If you turn on active stabilization the A74 will crop in when shooting video.
    If you turn on lens compensation, the A74 will crop in a little.
    If you turn on focus breathing compensation when shooting video, the A74 will crop in a little.
    If you use Catalyst Browse software to stabilize a video the software will crop in.
    After listing these modes when the A74 crops in for compensation, it looks like the compensation crops affect video more that photography.

    You could crop into 20 mm to obtain 24 mm like perspectives. Or, if you had A7r IV, you could get 30 mm 26 mp pictures using the aps-c mode. So if you just need to keep one lens, keep 20 mil. However, in the wedding situation, I think a fast zoom lens will be more useful.

And when it comes to the drag shutter dancing shots I prefer the 14mm GM. 14mm adds to the look and I crop in a little if needed. It's just a random focal length that didn't work for me. Might for others. I only took a $40 loss in Ebay fees.

    20f18g lens focus breathing (from the corrected Sony camera body) may be because the minimum focal length is very short, so the corrected angle of view is almost 24mm. It is a top mtf section with a slight disappointing depth expression and a slight crop, but satisfactory video shooting is possible

    If (6 month later) You still have that same dilemma then it looks like you can consider the Sigma DG DN 14-24mm since f/2.8 and smaller is what you would use for the dancing scenarios - with the benefit of being 4 excellent lenses more (it is fantastic 'especially' at 20mm regarding distortion) but things ain't that simple lol. • @MagicWeddingPhotographer
      @MagicWeddingPhotographer  Před 2 lety +1

      I do think it's a personal choice. Obviously when using ultra wide like 14 or 16mm you can get really creative with it. For me it's just to not worth to have such a wide lens for just few shots, so I prefer something more all around like 20 or 24mm, that can be used in multiple situations. If you're not sure which focal length you'll like more it might be worth getting a zoom like tamron to see which focal lengths you'll use most.

    The 24/1.4 has great rendering, half body portraits have great sharpness and smooth bokeh. The 20/1.8 is nothing special, it's sharp, but that's it. It has no bokeh to talk about, it's generally too wide for portraits and not wide enough for multiple people action shots.

    Maybe I'm barely human....but I've never understood dancing and how it's supposed to be fun. Do other people think it's fun or are they just mimicking what everyone else is doing to try to fit in? I just don't understand the point of dancing. It's similar to my thoughts on going to a theater with other people. You are watching a movie why is it a better experience with others. Why would you bring a date to a movie? I go to movie theaters alone. The only logically thing I can think of is the men are out dancing because they want to impress or meet other women....and apparently the women like dancing more. Sometimes I wish I could be more human and not think about these things and just be one of the guys. I am not a follower though.

      If i like the music what i hear, usualy i dance alone in a club, but i interact other peapole in the floor.
      The Basic is i dance with the music, but somethimes dance with others, and maybie sometimes impress girls.
      It's like a connection like drawing to the paper, and you.
      The music and your mind's imagination is the idea, the flow, your body is a pencil, and the floor the paper.
      Everybody drawing alone.
      Don't overthink, we do sometimes thing because, we want feel good, or just we want change our mood.

      I think it’s a commonality of interest. It’s a shared experience and some people find that to be more exciting than personal experience.
