      Hey Chris, absolutely love this video! It inspired me to get this lens and work on being more creative in my shots. I do have a question though, I got the lens yesterday and it's been making a rather loud clicking/grinding noise when changing Aperture stops. Is this normal? It's loud compared to my Sigma lenses, this is my first Sony lens however. I would really appreciate any feedback you can give.

    I would say 24mm is not for the beginner I still struggle with it but love when I nail it. I use to say to people asking what lens to buy (shooting people) - "as you go wider, you need more experience, and you need to be braver standing closer as you are no longer a distant observer, and as a result you will get better images". This is often typically what you see when people learn photography they start at 85 or more and end at 24. You may call it the reversed rule of age.

I mean every single photo you showed was was awesome 😎 I know you could do wonders with any lens. Yes, this video does make me want to purchase the 24, but I’m not naive enough believe that my photos would be as awesome as yours. It is what it is... I cannot even begin to tell you how grateful I am for this. I have been searching tirelessly for a review that will convince me that I am purchasing the right lens. Given that there are seemingly limitless options, it has been nearly impossible to come to a decision; but you have convinced me to make the switch from Nikon to Sony. I started my photography business a few months ago, and have only used the Nikon D5300 with a 50MM 1.4, so I know little to nothing about other cameras, and lenses. Thank you so much for your clear, and concise explanation, as well as the sample images!! I love that you call it your ‘storytelling lens’, because your style of photography is EXACTLY the same as mine (or at least what I am aiming for!) I am obsessed with the ‘candid lifestyle’ vibe! 😂 Again, I cannot thank you enough! Please, please, please make more videos like this! They are incredibly helpful for clueless beginners such as myself!!

    When shooting with 24mm I have more freedom to be able to tell the scene even going to get closer to the moment. I owned the 24-70 and 16-35 GM's, they are exceptional lenses (especially the wide angle) but I gave up on versatility focusing on creative ability. It is strange to tell it but frankly it is a lens that I prefer in an absurd way, and yet it is not easy to tell a story with 24mm but it inspires me and I will try to improve myself. Mainly my photographic genre and on documentary, travel, landscape and street.
    I confess to you that I liked this kind of speech very much and I would like you to talk about 85 GM, which are the favorite focal lengths when I work... Good work Chris...

  • @MagnetiqLabs

    Couple of years ago i was shooting only with 50mm and 85mm. But with time i started to go wider and wider. And now 24mm GM is my favourite lens! It lives on camera. I fall in love with it! Most of the people thinks that 24mm for landscapes, but i tried to prove that it's a magic portrait lens! Now i think it's much more fun than 35mm.
    Chris, i really love your style of photos!

    Chris, this is the best video I've found on how to properly shoot a 24mm lens. Search on CZcams for 24mm videos by other pros and their images look terrible. They will do half body or headshots with 24mm which should really be done with 85mm or greater. Or they shoot a portrait with an ugly and busy background. Environmental portraits with wider angle lenses, like the 24mm, are very difficult to master because there's so much background. Your work is truly amazing and inspirational. Your environmental portraits are like beautiful landscape shots that happen to have people in it.

  • @RodrigoVazquez91
    @RodrigoVazquez91 Před 8 měsíci +1

    This is exactly the kind of photography I love, the one that creates this perfect scene you can explore. The mix between the wide angle and the bokeh gives you this sort of 3D effect, kinda close to the medium format look. The composition feels like if the picture was alive. I had been thinking about getting a Sigma Art 24mm f/1.4, and this video is finally convincing me to get one. Your pictures are stunning by the way, awesome work!!

    Love the content of this video - I own the 24mm 1.4 because of your reviews and love the sharpness and ability to crop in close to 35mm for that documentary style. I appreciate you talking about the “center weighted” nature of your style - as that is a challenge of the lens. Good to know that center is okay and not everything has to be rule of thirds. Thanks Chris

    • @ChrisTurnerPhotographer
      @ChrisTurnerPhotographer  Před 4 lety +1

      Thanks mate. I think the “rule of thirds” in general gets a bit old if your using it all the time. I would use it more in a vertical sense. Like a horizontal photo but having the horizon on the lower or upper third line.

    Wow, that 24 mate is superb. Just amazing especially with the kind of skills that you have. The Brenizer method (bokeh panorama) was the thing that I absolutely like when I first saw it. I love wide-angle shots of landscapes and I was always curious how to photograph a wide-angle panorama bokeh until I saw that method. But to be honest, with your skills and the 24mm lens that you are using, it is more than enough for me. Kudos to you mate.
    Disclaimer: I don't know if ryan brenizer invented the bokeh panorama or he just learned it from someone, but as they say he popularized it.

    Great vid Chris, thanks for your insight and tips. Such a tough decision when some of us (e.g. me :-) don't have the budget to own as many lenses as we'd like. Am considering 24mm vs 35mm primes at present, this helps a lot.

    Brilliant video Chris. I agree 100%. If I was forced to keep only one lens, it would be the 24GM without a doubt. Stellar lens.

    the 24mm GM is so great. Recently I used it at an Event and now I really want it. I have the Sigma 35 1.4 and the size difference is big (lol).
    Love your pictures Chris!

      I used to have the Sigma 35, nice lens but yeah the 24 is magic

      @@ChrisTurnerPhotographer Indeed! The 35mm really produces High Quality pictures an all regards.
      But compared to the 24mm GM it's ..so slow :D Even though pretty much all pictures are in focus, it always feels lagging behind somehow. I guess it's different with the 35 1.2, since it has a different motor.
      But yeah..really looking forward to own a 24mm GM. :)
      Love your pictures and Videos Chris. Keep it going! ^_^
      I really hope to come to New Zealand soon..these beaches are crazyyy. :)

    Thanks chris, love your video, I like the Sony 24 mm too, but sometimes having some issues of distortion because I forgot the center, or I was expecting differently. But I will definitely using it more, coz it dose create story with perspective. Just like a movie..!

    loved this video. your work is amazing.... I just purchased my first 24mm lense. the New nikon z mount 24 1.8. It was hard to find other photographers who use this, so I appreciate this video. I am going to be practicing with the 24mm so I can get used to playing with perspectives. I think me using this range, would force me to get into the action!!

    I don't really have a 24mm GM, but I am using something similar (16mm Sigma on a Sony APS-C) and I totally agree with all your points. BTW, those shots you showed are lovely! Lots of emotion in them. I really dig the couple shot on the grassy field (5:40) and also the back seat shot (8:22). Really inspiring photos man. All the best and Cheers!

      I respectfully disagree with Chris' assessment of his own photo @8.22 as not a particularly amazing image. If you look at the area between the couple it is in the shape of a love heart. In a picture of 2 people about to get married it is an awesome effect.

    Yeah! Really inspiring video as I am trying to get the deeper feeling for my Fuji 16mm f1.4. I am always afraid to use it too much in real working situations... and I am always glad I did. I keep coming back and need to really learn this.. Great video! Do you have any videos coming up using the 16mm f1.4 I think there are many people that would love to watch. Or maybe some insights on when its time for the 23/35ff vs when the 16/24ff is the way to go.
    Regards from Anton Engblom in Sweden.

    Great video! I bought the 24mm 1.4GM right when it was launched and I’ve loved it since then. Others thought I was nuts for getting a 24mm for portraits but I loved the look and my clients have also loved the pictures. Some of my best pictures were taken with a 24mm. I’m thinking about the 135mm 1.8 GM for a nice contrast. :-)
