  • Haunting Beauty: Exploring Abandoned Towns of Kiambu County, Kenya [Kenya, rural towns, abandoned, Gatundu South, Githunguri]
Journey with Village to Town TV to uncover the forgotten stories of three once-thriving towns in Kiambu County, Kenya: Nembu, Mutati, and Kibichoi. These towns, nestled in the scenic landscapes of Gatundu South and Githunguri constituencies, now stand eerily silent, a testament to the passage of time and changing fortunes.
Our exploration delves into the heart of these abandoned towns, capturing their fading grandeur and the remnants of a bygone era. We'll explore deserted shops, abandoned homes, and overgrown marketplaces, painting a poignant picture of their decline.
But this video is more than just a glimpse into the past. Explore the social, economic, and environmental factors that contributed to their abandonment.
This documentary is a must-watch for anyone interested in:
    Kenyan history and culture
    Rural development and challenges
    Abandoned places and urban exploration
The future of small towns in Africa
Join Village to Town TV on this captivating journey as we explore the haunting beauty of these forgotten towns and uncover the stories they hold within their crumbling walls.

I think it's unfair to label them as zombie towns. What about the peaceful and lush, green environment? I would rather the status quo remains rather than development with disregard to aesthetics and quality of life, not to mention the resultant noise, pollution and environmental degradation that comes with it. I usually visit those areas when I need peace of mind, tranquility and fresh air.

These are not towns but shopping centres. Such rural shopping centres can expand or decline on account of several factors 1. Proximity to big towns: The middle class from those areas invest in the surrounding towns.
    2. Mobility/ easy communication: This makes families who earn from farming to do their shopping in the surrounding towns where they will get everything, from farm tools to food items not available on the farm.
    3. Young men either go to the towns daily for various economic activities or have completely migrated.
    4. Most of the food including milk is produced at the family unit. This beats the logic of having many shops.
So, while it is true that those shopping centres came up during the coffee boom in the 70s, social economic dynamics are completely different now.

Agriculture, the lifeline of the towns is also not bringing much in terms of returns. People would not otherwise remain in big towns/cities, because there are no jobs and relatedly, not enough money circulating to sustain a large number of businesses. Before 1990, few people were struggling. People were able to educate their children comfortably. The economies in the area have not recovered since, not even during Kibaki's time.

Great video, voice clarity and true content.
The one sided town was a popular planning layout in those days with commercial plots surrounding a market place at the center.
These townships have seen their better days. The economy was coffee driven and families could afford vehicles especially landrovers and peugeots pickups mostly to ferry coffee beans to factories. Everyone had money even teenagers from picking coffee especially during Decembers.
I blame the failed economy to the government who set coffee market policies. The community were caught unaware and most youths failed to get higher education. Some resulted into alcohol due to depression and others moved to better towns eg Ruiru, Githurai for jobs.
There is a very zombie township in the area called Mariige. I was told a curse was spelled to it by traders who were once ripped off their goods.
These townships are well connected to big towns like Kiambu, Thika and Nairobi. Thanks to new roads, a drive to Thika is about 30mins.
The townships are parked with true culture, farm fresh products and healthy environment. The community fabric is supportive and full of love.

Most Kiambu villages are full of relatives that are addicted to illicit brews. If you are well to do, they will beg for $$$ anytime you visit & even show up at your Nairobi residence without an invitation. Some of us have had to hide & learnt to say NO. Please share the real reason you fled & never returned, it's therapeutic.

She is a highly gifted presenter second to none but the Kikuyu media missed it all when they ignored her rare talent. She might have advanced in age but her voice is ever beautiful, commanding and full of life. Thank you for making me see what I have only been hearing about. Have known what I did not know. The kikuyu media houses should rethink on their misguided giving PM Squared a cold shoulder after many years of establishing their media houses through her natural and rare influence. Those who ganged up to fire her should be ashamed of their misguided action and their folly. We want P.M Squared back to where she belongs!

Beacuse people are busy inthe farms ama u want to see idlers aroundfor it to be called a buzzing town central kenta had controled thir population unlike western where u find people idling and rhey have is 50 kes in their pocket

These small towns need to evolve from agrarian driven economies to small cottage manufacturing driven economies. Think of the small things we import from china. The hundreds of billions we are sending to similar chinese small towns should be going to these towns. This is an opportunity we somehow are not willing to exploit
