yes i had heard too but my kindle touch wont charge. bought 2 years ago didnt buy an extended warranty and they tell me i have to buy a new one. holy moly its only 2 years old why should it go wrong? ah well thank you so much for your reply.
I'm so glad he shared the history behind the Kindle purchase and ownership. What a horrible experience. Nobody should pay Amazon new money for this thing. No way!
I've got a hint for everyone looking for a 1.8V connection on the kindle mainboard. If you pause the video at 5:31 you can see the measuring process. Look at the bottom right of the board. You will see a white flat cable right next to the screw. Above the end of the cable you can see an connection point. At this point you will find your 1.8V.
Great video BTW! I'm having issues with Kindle Voyage (7th gen - 2014/2015), and I notice the serial port is exactly the same, just different orientation! lol! Just stop the video 6m32s to see the G-ground R-receive T-trasmit on the pads. Nice! BTW, I love Silicon Labs serial chips. I get almost 1Mbps on my NodeMCU ESP8266 setup. I hope to be successful at fixing my Kindle Voyage. I'm not ruling out that the flash is defective. We'll see.
awesome video, exactly what I was looking for. I am currently stuck with a bug in fastboot where it keeps "waiting for device", but I will get back to it tomorrow.
this is brilliant. So glad you have shared this information. My Kindle Paperwhite started this boot loop behaviour as well. Originally my Kindle stopped connecting to my PC but it still would charge. If I hold the USB plug in very firmly it can connect and stay connected but it's extremely temperamental. After a couple of days of trying to get this to work, and repeating the 40 second rebooting trials, the kindle started doing reboot loops and I haven't been able to recover it. Amazons support was useless. Basically, try to reset it, your Kindle is out of warranty so bad luck, we don't repair it. The tech refused to accept that the port is faulty for USB communications because it was still charging. Have you tried replacing the USB port on the kindle? I'd like to but worried about how difficult it might be to unsolder and resolder.
Hey, can I ask you a favor? Do you still have those files from 8:27 website available? Unfortunately, the website is no more and I haven't been able to find those files anywhere else. Thank you so much.
I've tried connecting the debug serial interface, but no info displayed at all, so it means my Kindle is dead? I think there is serious flaw on design of Kindle, specially it always tries to connect to network periodically, so matter the status of battery.
I'm using TTL device (www.sxtyhy.net/product/showproduct.php?lang=cn&id=34) similar to the bottom right one of 4:33 and have mad sure it's working on loop-back test, and Putty on Windows for serial connection. I removed the jumper and connected Tx, Rx and GND pin. The data rate, flow control and parity are set 115200 8N1, none, none, like what you have set. But no output when I connect pins to TTL device.
I have "Kindle Paperwhite (11th Generation) - 2021 release" and it is in permanent boot loop. Does this devices have connection points for TX, RX and GND? I took the back off and see nothing like what was on the past models.
After a bit more searching it appears this is the first Kindle that lacks serial pads on the board, though the experts at this have not given up and expect to have a solution later this year.

Hey I have a question. I have CP 2104 and XL4005 DC-DC Step-down. Can I connect RX and TX to IN+ IN- on XL4005 and next, OUT+ and OUT- to RX and TX in Kindle to connect to serial? I mean ofcourse voltage XL4005 will be decrease to 1.8V. I have to make modification on CP2104 to VCC connector? I have read that enough is RX TX and GND.
Hi Emil. Please absolutely don't do it. CL4005 is a DC-DC converter. It means it is supposed to provide power to other devices. It cannot "translate" 3,3V signal to 1,8V signal. So you can use it to power up CP2104 by connecting OUT-/+ to GND and VCC on your CP2104. RX-TX you should connect directly as described in video and in the comments.
E-LAB I have another questions. Where did you connect that 1.8v? Why do you made this additional pin? Where did you connect your potentiometer?Where is this 3.3 source where you have already 1.8v on TTL? I don't understand this from video. Can you explain every connections from CP to Kindle? I know how to connect to serial (RX TX and GND) but I think that is not enough.
This additional pin (VIO pin of CP2104) controls TTL level signal of the output (RX/TX). Whatever voltage you provide at this pin, then output voltage level of RX/TX will be the same (of course within limits). So you need to provide 1,8V from any external power source. Voltage divider as shown at 5:49 can be used here. Instead 3,3V you can also use 5V. Then set 1,8V on Vout by adjusting the potentiometer. Finally connect Vout to VIN of CP2104.
Could you further explain what you have done with this 1,8V that you get form the potentiometer? If I am good understanding this Vout from potentiometer where you have finally 1,8V, you have connected to the VIO pin on the converter board? And if I am right that's all? From now we have a 1,8V on RX/TX? Or we need to provide this 1,8V VIO to kindle board by soldering this somwhere?

Great! Thank you for your answer! Last question. Seems you found (5:45) 1.76 Volts on the board. I know the spec is 1.8V, but could it have worked with 1.76V?
Yes, it perfectly should work with 1.76V instead of 1.8V - you will never get perfect 1.8V. And actually I don't know why i didn't use this voltage visible at 5:45 as a reference - maybe I didn't catch it on the camera but the voltage on this pin was changing... Hard to say now.
Thank you! I'm still waiting for the usb-serial device to arrive. However, still seems like a daunting task. Not sure if I understand everything. Thank you for the video and for answering!

Could you explain or give an example description of connecting all pins from converter -> to kindle. And tell how we get 1,8 from 3,3 V on converter? Thanks a lot, great job.

Hi. you mean the "kinit: init not found!"...? No, i didn´t solve the problem :( It's good that we both have the problem, so maybe we'll be helped sooner. If you solve it, pleas tell me how.
OK if I'll get the solution it, I'll tell you. Now I'm trying to solve it, but without success so far :(. Yes I have the same message - "IP-Config: no devices to configure kinit: Unable to mount root fs on device dev(179,2) kinit: init not found!" It most likely is a result of a deleting everything, as you said (option 4 of recovery menue). And option 3 doesn't work for some reason :( . I also can't get into fastboot mode, and command "bist fasboot" stuck at battary voltage, and coninuing to wright it. Iused fastboot drivers for windows - stuck in "waiting for device", tryed in Kubrick - same thing - "waiting for device" :(
Sorry, cannot help you with that. I just described my case which is completely different from yours. There could be multiple reasons for touchscreen mulfunctioning.
Thank you for answer. I already was there, but i dont know what should i do to that files. I mean this link : github.com/TobiasWooldridge/Fastboot-Kindle Do i have to compile them somwere? Can you explaine please.
Sorry, I didn't get your question. And yes, you need 1.8V on TX and RX. 1.8V means logical 1, 0V means logical 0. Everything that is higher then 1.8V (+/- some tolerance) on RX or TX line can burn your device.
Thanks for the reply! I ordered this from EBAY. Gives the ability to select multiple UART voltages r.ebay.com/neEisI. This will work correct? Love the video, esp. They OTA software bugged me too. When ANY usb is plugged in PC or Wall crashes and freezes on USB ICON SCREEN. No USB drive feature EVER loads on PC, even when kindle is rebooted while plugged in.
this is the coolest video about Kindle on CZcams i've ever seen (:

Not necessary your kindle is dead. Double check serial connection: TTL levels, baud rate and if you didn't mix TX/RX.

In the terminal i have this respone in this moment:
- Connected to USB host!
- Error! Couldn't find NV variable slot-count
- Error! Couldn't find NV variable slot-suffixes
- Battery voltage: 3813 mV
in the fastboot help command i can´t finde the command "setvar". there is only a "getvar" command. an the rsponse for "./fastboot getvar bootmode" ist "bootmode: main".
´Has annyone an idea?
while booting, it willl stuck there:

You are probably not using correct fastboot version for Kindle. Try fastboot from this link: github.com/TobiasWooldridge/Fastboot-Kindle

Befoer i have watched your great video, i have tried something in the recoverymenu. Ther i have used the option Nr4 (erase MMC0). Now i think this was a big mistake.
Gruß, greeting, приветствие: Rudi from Germany
Hello man!!! have you solved the problem with your PW2 kindle? I have absolutely the same problem, and don't know how to solve it!
Hi. you mean the "kinit: init not found!"...?
No, i didn´t solve the problem :(
It's good that we both have the problem, so maybe we'll be helped sooner.
If you solve it, pleas tell me how.
OK if I'll get the solution it, I'll tell you. Now I'm trying to solve it, but without success so far :(. Yes I have the same message - "IP-Config: no devices to configure
kinit: Unable to mount root fs on device dev(179,2)
kinit: init not found!"
It most likely is a result of a deleting everything, as you said (option 4 of recovery menue).
And option 3 doesn't work for some reason :( . I also can't get into fastboot mode, and command "bist fasboot" stuck at battary voltage, and coninuing to wright it. Iused fastboot drivers for windows - stuck in "waiting for device", tryed in Kubrick - same thing - "waiting for device" :(
how can i fix the ( i can`t press the touch on the screen ) ?
Sorry, cannot help you with that. I just described my case which is completely different from yours. There could be multiple reasons for touchscreen mulfunctioning.
PLEASE!!! Can you tell me how did you install fastboot on you linux?
www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?t=171460
I compiled from this link: github.com/TobiasWooldridge/Fastboot-Kindle
мой PW3 превратился в кирпич, а большинство ссылок с файлами образов протухли. Помогите!
Да, у Тобиаса ссылки уже протухли, но ссылка на версию 5.4 работает. Берите её.
I found the detailed information is awesomely invaluable, but the background music is terribly annoying. What a pity! Thanks anyway.
Will take that into account. Thanks for the comment.
@@e-lab4982 I loved the background music
PLEASE!!! Anyone give me a link to download an apropriate version of FASBOOT for kindle PaperWhite for windows or for linux.
C'mon, have a look at the first link in the description. It is there.
Thank you for answer. I already was there, but i dont know what should i do to that files. I mean this link : github.com/TobiasWooldridge/Fastboot-Kindle
Do i have to compile them somwere? Can you explaine please.
So you need 1.8 on Tx and 1.8 on Rx ?
Sorry, I didn't get your question. And yes, you need 1.8V on TX and RX. 1.8V means logical 1, 0V means logical 0. Everything that is higher then 1.8V (+/- some tolerance) on RX or TX line can burn your device.
Thanks for the reply! I ordered this from EBAY. Gives the ability to select multiple UART voltages r.ebay.com/neEisI. This will work correct? Love the video, esp. They OTA software bugged me too. When ANY usb is plugged in PC or Wall crashes and freezes on USB ICON SCREEN. No USB drive feature EVER loads on PC, even when kindle is rebooted while plugged in.
very difficult to follow. will it also work on kindle oasis?
Can someone please for fucks sake figure out how to remove the kindle OS and put linux on it?
The link of the rom Is dead Can you please send me the file?
I managed to find different source and updated the link
I looked everywhere for those ROM files and I cant find it! Does anyone got some mirors or a place where I can download them?
Managed to find different source. Link in the description is updated.
