      Oland had Keye fired. Oland was also a drunkard. He died is August 1938 from alcoholism induced pneumonia.

    Harold Huber makes me smile every time. What a character. Along with Eric Blore, Edward Brophy and Allen Jenkins they did much more than support un their movies. Poor Hollywood, what they've given up for the sake of computer graphics. Thanks for the post!

    I know it was just a throw away line, to explain why the Chans were in Monaco, but the son's comment about having a painting in the Paris Exposition gave me the idea for a new mystery. Charlie Chan's grandson, or granddaughter, has inherited artist talent and a talent for solving crimes. Maybe set in San Francisco in the 1970s or 1980s...

      Poor people in the Great Depression enjoyed seeing the elite dressed to the teeth, and falling to the depths, a double delight of imagining themselves rolling in riches while at the same time being superior to the wealthy. That still entertains people today, it would seem.

      In French "alibi" is written literally like in english. Pronunciation different.
      Thus, the Frenchman should have said like in French.

    Very nice you do an HD video of this classic, kudos to you. But then you screw up the aspect ratio. How hard could it have been to get that part right? Squat wide people and impossibly long cars or lopping off the top and bottom detracts it does not improve. Plese take this down and do it in the correct ratio- respect the original, please.

    For me Warren Oland was for me the ultimate Charlie Chan Sidney Toler is okay but he is no one on Oland made it his business not just to learn Chinese and to write Chinese and to speak Chinese he really tried to encompass his character to the degree that he went around saying that his grandmother was in fact Mongolian, when nobody can find any such paperwork saying that she was, 1/4 of a grandparent or 1/8 of a grandparent who was not white would characterize you as being not white it is a great question as to whether the Hollywood bigwigs took that and said okay so he's not entirely white therefore we can put him with non-white female he would not be allowed normally she even touch their hands he would be allowed to do so if he was not entirely white and it's a question and you have to wonder if Hollywood bigwigs actually bought his story enough to go okay he's not entirely white we can maybe permit it. This is going to say I edited it please understand I am using voice to text because my hands do not work and this is my only tool for working with to put down my thoughts it does not do punctuation and sometimes does not spell words or even names correctly but I cannot do anything else but hope that whoever reads it will take that into consideration, there is one thing I wanted to add to this comment of mine and it's this Oland was so beloved by the Chinese when he went to China they really believed that he might be one fourth Chinese they believed it because he did them honor he always tried to do them on a not unlike Anthony Quinn who did the same thing when being forced to portray everything from Greeks to American Indians, or as we now call them native Americans, whenever he portrayed anything Anthony Quinn you could say had taken on the baton left by this predecessor who played Charlie Chan by making sure that whatever character he portrayed whatever people he portrayed they were portrayed in an honorable fashion up as opposed to the racist fashion of Hollywood.

  • @shelbynamels7948

    I hate it when scriptwriters resort to this kind of resolution. So what if the guy at the end was a bad guy and had it coming. The driver of the car that killed him (presumably dead, since nobody is rushing out to help him or call an ambulance) doesn't know that. She has to live with the trauma of having killed someone for the rest of her life.
    This type of 'higher power justice' is the laziest type of scriptwriting there is. Anybody who does that - and there are quite a few that resorted to this type of 'easy out' - should have their writing license revoked.

    • @jwoolman5
      @jwoolman5 Před 3 měsíci

      Well, they are supposed to be partly comic relief and partly a romantic interest for somebody in the cast. So they just have to be funny and pretty. This is why Charlie’s poor wife had to birth so many children, he never seems to run out of No. x sons. Do we ever see a No. x daughter taking over?
