    Really nice video. Helped me a ton. Quick note for anyone doing this on jack stands in the drive way. You do not need to remove 02 sensors nor do you have to remove the full exhaust. You can manage to disconnect the exhaust at the cats and remove the support to let the exhaust hang in the driveway while you work around the drive shaft to get it removed. It may make easier access in the long run but definitely not worth the hassle in my opinion. Thanks for the video!

    Excellent video. At first I thought the commentary was over dubbed but the mechanic is actually speaking as he goes along. Superb description, flowing and prescise and not easy to do whilst you're focused on the task. Well done. Nice clear, well lit photography too.

    This procedure deals only with 07 and prior CTS, the 08 and newer use c/v joints on the shaft and are serviced differently ! I was no able to find procedure on utube for these cars, the common cure was a $1200 driveshaft ! I went to my parts supplier who found that Dorman supplies the hanger, part # 934-620, and replacement takes a little time, but not impossible ! Start with dropping the exhaust by removing all the rubber hangers at the mufflers and the tail pipes, letting the exhaust rest on the cross member, then remove heat shielding and mark a straight line starting at the differential and running the whole way down the shaft to the transmission flange ! Using a long extension and a torn bit, remove the bolts holding the shaft to the tranny, then the ones holding the shaft to the differential ! Remove the two hanger bearing Bolts and the the driveshaft, it might need a little pry to get it clear of the flange, and pull it straight out the back . Mount the shaft in a soft jaw vice and separate the two halves by removing the bolts holding the C/v joint together, a few light taps should separate it, you then remove the snap ring holding the C/V flange to the shaft and remove the flange ! The small boot clamp has to be removed and replaced ! The hanger bearing came right off with a light pry between the assy and the dust flange, the new one slid back on ( the new metal dust flange was too large, so I tightened it up a bit, wiped a bit of JB weld on it and tapped it on ) I regreased the C/v joint and reassembled the shaft and installed ! I am a certified mechanic with 40 years experience, but someone with mechanical skills and a home garage could do this !

      Thank you sir. What were your symptoms?
      I was wondering about this as 2008 is the start of the second generation CTS and quite a bit is different, like the third differential housing bushing location that often fails on 2007 and below, that has now been relocated to the rear of the differential resulting in a tripod mount arrangement that does a better job of distributing the anti-torque loads, not to mention it makes more sense than the previous design. I'm curious as to what your symptoms were. I have an 08 CTS rear wheel drive automatic. On firm acceleration from a stop I feel a firm bump beneath the car, and some times I get a vibration at cruise speed although not often since the car is not driven hard.
      I don't hear any noise and the tire wear is dead even front and rear, to rule out suspension parts. I strongly suspect the carrier bearing and that the thump I feel is the shaft lifting up under load. I haven't had a look at it yet. I have the GM shop manuals for the car and saw pictures of the joint configuration used in place of the of the old style universal joint. That was also a good upgrade.

      @aaronj2141 Před 3 lety

      Thanks for the write up, for me the hardest part was the taking off old bearing. I ended up splitting it with a grinder and it came off. Asides from that, i need new exhaust flange bolts because mine were extremely rusty. Highly recommend buying them if your going to be doing this job. For what ever reason, my drive shaft didn't have a slot for a snap ring, and the old bearing had no snap ring either. This was on a 2008 CTS 3.6L with manual transmission.
      I do recommend investing in a good quality torx for for the driveshaft to transmission coupling, an impact rated T45 will do you great there. I bent my normal one trying to loosen the bolts.

      @@aaronj2141 I am in the middle of this job on 2011 CTS 3.6 RWD with a manual transmission. I am also having problems getting the old bearing off. It seems as though the manual transmission cars use a press fit bearing setup rather than a slip fit/C-clip setup. Hopefully I can get it off with a bearing separator. A hammer and punch didn't get me very far.

    Where’s there any symptoms to let you know if bad other than by looking at it? I have an 06 CTS RWD and I’m having a vibration when accelerating. It’s either coming from the driveshaft area or the rear. Not really making any noises but it doesn’t vibrate when cruising at highway speeds only on moderate and hard acceleration
