- Games others love that you don't understand the appeal of, the most extreme thing you have done to play a video game, doing a Game Boy Advance book (?), and more!

You're really good at recreating the street fighter 2 sound effects, Pat. Sincerely.
PSH! HURRAAA! HO HO HO! YOU WIN! PERFECT!
USSR...
You are, you are!!! (Imitating marissa tomei in my cuz vin)
The appeal of Megaman, and especially a stage select, is forgotten by modern audiences.
Back when games were linear and challenging, it was COMMON to only see 3 or 4 levels out of a 5-7 level game. This meant that the gamer never got to experience a chunk of the game. Sometimes just because they couldn’t land one jump, or something.
So Megaman flayed the linear level structure and layer it all on a platter for the player to choose. Cant nail those dropping platforms in gutsman’s stage? Play a different level and come back to that later.
It was revelatory at the time.
And you could play “paper rock scissors” to get the weapons thst worked against people.
Metal blade kicked all forms of ass
Honestly I think that system works to make the difficulty worse because it's like you have 6 equally impossible stages instead of a solid difficulty curve, I just kept trying different stages only to keep constantly getting my ass kicked instead of being forced to get good at one.
Crash Bandicoot 2 went for a similar style with the warp rooms and I just liked it way better how Crash 1 and 4 handled it. Linearity gives you a better feeling of progress anyway IMO.
Animal Crossing. People see it as the perfect game to unwind and relax. To screw around and go at your own pace.
I, however, unironicly keep seeing it as the most stressful and anxiety-inducing game ever made, to the point it begins to feel like a chore.
I completely understand it's like a second job
Honestly, that's how most modern open-world games feel to me. Like, I get past the intro scenario and then all of a sudden a map opens up with icons littered all over the place, and I just see a bunch of work I have to do.
Snowboard kids is a game that I will play and genuinely enjoy every song on that game.
The music in shovel knight plague of shadows is insane
I think a certain guidebook for the original Gameboy could be quite good, and Ian could be an invaluable resource with his love for the old gray brick.
Yes! I still have the original Gameboy Players Guide from Nintendo Power, I would love to see an updated one.
That would be a lot bigger than the nes and snes books.
I had lots of fun with Gameboy games on the original grey brick. The games were cheaper and had thier own kind of fun. Even the OG Gameboy beat those tiger lcd games.
@@yotvvan2472 well, if you exclude GBC games there's "only" 1046, actually less than the SNES (if you count Japanese and European exclusives, at least). Still a lot, though. And GBC would add something like 915 games, or another book.
@@hjalmarjohnson5846 Ok i guessed the game boy had way more games than the snes since it was popular for a lot longer and had more sales.
*Streets of Rage 1 & 2 sound test FTW* 🥰
Aussie Rules Footy was an all time game, they captured the spirit of it perfectly!
For the longest time, I've never got into RPGs. Especially in my early years of gaming. There were some RPGs, but never got me interested on the rest of them out there. I also never got the appeal of fighting games early on. Especially when they started to eclipse side scowling beat-em-ups in popularity until I noticed how similar most fighting games looked just as good as the side scrollers.
I took a video game design class in 2008 taught by a 60 year old physics professor. We used xna creator, blender and python.
Mega Turrican, Gleylancer, SoR2, Ninku (Saturn), Soukyugurentai prolly my fav sound test games
Mega Turrican! Any Turrican game for that matter is God Tier video game music.
@Zylo Wolf 2.0 Ill have to throw it in n check out the music, im not remembering it atm
Blazing Lazers had a kickass soundtrack/soundtest.
Popular game franchise I just don't get: Sim games.
Serious voice "I want corn dogs with cheese sauce." My God!
Man, I remember printing out walkthroughs from GameFAQs and keeping them in a binder to reference.
Same here bro... I used to look up achievements for the Xbox 360 and print them out, I also put them in a binder to look them up.... Before iPhones... hahahhahahaha
Fortnite...or any live service game...I'll forever never understand the idea of playing a game that ends up feeling like a job, and then paying more just to do more "work", but then again I'm not a gambler lol
For the "do you think you could ever play an entire series on a single console" question, you CAN ALMOST play every single Yakuza game on PS4 now, as long as you count the Kiwami remakes of 1 and 2. The only game left out would be Dead Souls, which doesn't even matter.
I completely agree about Microsoft is gonna be the legacy company. Theyll make quality new stuff too, but no one else seems to see the value in offering and preserving their back catalogue, probably because they have the data to pour over on the back end.
the n64 wrestling games got me really into the product. I was vaguely aware of wrestling but my family didnt have cable so I didn't see it very often.
But after playing revenge I was the biggest rey mysterio fan in the world
Hey Pat & Ian, good video, great pod cast as always. If I may note, Call of Duty - Finest Hour does in fact starts you with no weapon. If I remember correctly, you start the game and play without a gun for the first few minutes until you go inside the factory.
I'm with you on golf Pat. Can't stand watching it on TV, don't play it in my personal life, but love video game golf.
Hell yeah, some of my most played multiplayer experiences when I was in high school were hot shots golf 3 and the tiger woods games. The PSP hot shots game was my go to bus game for like a year.
I don't like watching pretty much any sport aside from motorsport and track & field/snowboarding when the Olympics and Winter Olympics come across, but I'll always be down for a game of Neo Turf Masters or FIFA.
Castlevania: symphony of the night, great soundtrack!
U.N. Squadron is super catchy, I would leave my brothers snes on just to watch the demo and listen to the music
Forest fire remix on OCR
8:09 Thanks for answering my question, guys! I'll always remember my Gamecube for being the Zelda machine (alongside all the other great games).
I went to school for game programming so obviously skewed but I actually did have a history of games class, but it was very much just the basics
One of the games I ran the sound test for the most was Ninja Gaiden II (and that was weird because it had three separate sound tests, for some reason, including one named Musicruise).
I glanced & thought the title was “Games Otters Like That You Don’t Understand.” I was getting hype to find out what games Otters enjoy until I realized it was the word Others
Dance Dance Revolution, of course.
Otters like me don't understand why _SSSSSEEEEEEEEAALLS_ like _SSSSSSSSSEEEEEEEEEEEAALLLEDD_ games :P
Golden Axe II on Genesis had soundtrack and SFX board as well. I really liked that soundtrack. .
The Celeste soundtrack is fantastic too.
Hah, no surprise to see Mega Man in the thumbnail.
About putting a full series on the Switch question, it's not the full series catalog but we have 2 huge castlevania collections which have all the NES, GBA, Genesis, Gameboy games as well as some extras.
A GBA guide would probably end up being significantly easier than an N64 guide despite the difference in total games. The games are more straight forward on average and you can actually get a good feel of the games via emulation. The GBA shovelware is better than most other consoles because it's not a complicated console. 80% of it is very average and easy platformers. If you broke up the GBA library into volumes of 3-4 year chunks of games released in the USA, each one of those would be like the Super Nintendo guide.
Oh man, I remember going to an Internet cafe and printing off a Final Fantasy V strategy guide which would’ve cost me an arm and a leg but the guy must’ve felt sorry for me and let me have it for free.
Pat, I'm sure you have a box of carrying cases for Gameboys or some other portable, that you can use as a murse. I use a GBA carrying case for a murse. I keep my wallet, my Aleve, my inhaler, and my Chapstick in it. Go dig through your boxes of junk. I'm sure you have something.
The best soundtracks were the Neverhood and Skullmonkeys games
Skullmonkeys had the best soundtrack
YES!
I love Skullmonkeys, especially the bonus stage track lol.
Back to the Future is a shooter!
Used to boot up Breath of Fire 3 or Final Fantasy X-2 for the opening themes.
CU Podcast amusement park definetely needs a ranch dressing haunted house :D
For me it was Fire Pro D for the Dreamcast. I still have a printed faq for one of those games but also just before the Dreamcast got all the swap disc and free booting backups there was an exploit that let you play imports if you opened the console and disconnected the controller port which disabled the battery and if you let the system sit for like(I think it was 7-10 minutes)you could just boot any game you wanted and that how a friend and I played the import copy of Marvel vs Capcom 2 because it released first and we wanted to play that game something FIERCE.
An arcade full of action 52 games would be a pretty good addition to the "games of skill"
End theme to Streets of Rage 2 🎶 👍🏻
20:00 you can almost hear him smirking through his voice
Tetris and smash bros brawl had absolutely crazy music ! Especially brawl ! They had such a large library of music and remakes, it was more than nostalgic but actually enjoyable.
Thanks for answering my question about the Nintendo Mini Classics keychains. If you ever see any at a flea market or yardsale they are getting expensive. The dual screen zelda one goes for like 100 bucks on Ebay IF you can even find one, some of the others are also close to that. They don't come up often.
3:11 I love the _Bust A Groove_ series of videogames, but I agree with Ian - the PS1 games are incompatible with HDTV's. I even tried using it with a RAD2X cable, the sync issues are still a problem
I keep the CRTs around as well, but for the saturn/ps1 era lightgun games. Also play all my other pre ps2/og xbox era consoles on them as well. Hard to beat rgb via scart for the classic stuff. 2 PVMs, a VGA CRT for Dreamcast only, and a late model Samsung 4:3 for Gamecube/ps2 lightgun games
One franchise is Shantae
Every Shantae game has a physical release on the switch
At least it will once LRG ships my order lol
Seriously though Im so thrilled about this
@@jamesb.6177 yeah
Waiting on my order too
Even ordered Shantae on the gbc
Because if I can’t afford an original copy
A rerelease is the next best thing
I thought the easy answer would be Batttletoads
Yup. My bro got battletoads for good grades and he thought well both of us thought sweet another coop beat em up. Nope! Each level is stupid after the next.
Climbing, chasing, riding, racing, man can we just get back to the fighting. That's when it's good.
8:14 the Yakuza franchise. All 8 mainline games released in the US are on PS4/PC. 0, 1/2 remakes, 3-5 remasters, 6 and like a dragon.
I agree, it will just take time before classes are a thing. However when I was going to college back in the day there was an elective about The Harry Potter series. So it doesnt shock me that it will become a thing. I just think it will be sooner than you guys are thinking.
I can't wait to see a history of video games class on video game popularity on the internet. How did it become so popular so quickly in the early days of video sites like CZcams and early social media? Then just see a montage of James Rolfe pretend shitting on video games. Because History!
Also Pat as a carnie:
Customer: "The pink elephant, if you please, Sir!"
Pat: "You were over the line...."
.... What on EARTH are you guys talking about?? The GBA has one of the BEST game libraries pound for pound compared to any system! I can't begin to tell you how many quality titles are on the system! Moreover, the system has a HUGE following & is immensely popular! I just don't understand why you guys don't have much experience with it considering how amazing the system was.
Lol I used to record Casette tapes of video game music so I could listen to them on the go. And yup, did that exact thing with Sonic 2, which still has one of the greatest soundtracks of all time imo.
Hey! I've actually played through Xena Warrior Princess on the N64. It's not all that bad.
Yay, the CUPodcast Cruise got mentioned again! XD
In response to that first question, the community college I went to, I was able to take a History of Video Games course that actually counted towards my history degree.
what i miss about video games is in game codes to unlock things like paintball mode or making the avatar look different
Rain World - amazing game, amazing platformer , amazing soundtrack, hard and challenging.
Nobody likes it except me!
I gotta say I love the gba. Advanced Wars being the original series that stick out to me. I beat the first Final Fantasy on the gba. Also my first exposer to Super Mario World. River City Ransom also has a great port.
Wow.. I thought I was the only one who appreciated bust a groove. I’ve never heard any one on CZcams mention that game
there was a small community of people, myself included, that talked about and even posted Bust a Groove gameplay on CZcams. It's mostly dissolved by now :(
I enjoyed it for what it was but it was very overshadowed by the fact that the PS1 was THE console for Bemani rhythm games and those were just always amazing.
Pat definitely understands the appeal of Megaman, that’s why he chose a Megaman screenshot as his clickbait thumbnail image
I had 4 of the keychains: DK, Mario, Fire and Parachute. They were fun to play in gym class on days we didn’t have to dress out. Still have them, but batteries are all dead.
Yet another video showing how far Ian is behind the times when it comes to retro game upconversion technology. There are devices out there now that will upconvert your old games with virtually zero added lag, and there are displays nowadays that have very low input lag in game mode, around 15 milliseconds or so, or one frame. You absolutely should be able to play your Bust a Groove on a setup like that without any lag issues.
Even CRT's take around 16 milliseconds to draw a single frame on the screen from top to bottom. Thus it is actually not true that CRT's have zero lag. Modern displays paired with a good upscaler should have no more lag than a CRT does. There really is no excuse anymore if you know what to buy. A RetroTINK, RAD2X cable or OSSC will get you where you need to go.
1 frame is so incredibly fast that all but the absolute most twitch speedrunners will ever notice such a thing. Modern displays draw each frame instantaneously while CRT's have to draw each line one at a time, and it takes 16ms for a CRT to draw the entire screen once. Then the next frame starts from scratch and starts to be drawn from the top, rinse lather repeat.
Modern flat panels on the other hand make an entire frame appear instantaneously, which takes approx 12-20ms depending on the display to show a single frame on the screen, with completely black screens shown in between frames to reduce motion blur. It happens so fast that most humans can't see it happening.
There are video's on CZcams showing both of these things side by side and in slow motion so you can see the difference. It's an interesting watch. Will update with links later when I have a chance.
you don't have to turn the volume down in BTTF, just press pause then B, then unpause
Capcom games always had great music. As a kid I'd intentionally go to the sound test for Street Fighter II and Megaman X.
I used to love doing the sound test of Ninja Gaiden 1 and also 2's Musicruise
Hmm being able to play a version of every released Zelda game at that point on the Gamecube?? Does that include the CD-i Zelda games? ;D
Thunder force 4, Batman, and streets of rage 2 on genesis are great to listen to
I have the Zelda edition game cube 😃 the only game they left out was sadly link to the past as GBA just released a version of it and they felt that putting it on the gamecube disc would take away from the GBA sales.
"1500 GBA games and just under 1400 are ports or remakes"..... ABSOLUTE HORSESHIT!
There are many hundreds of original GBA games.
man that back to the future question threw me for a loop yeah it has elements in there of a shooter but I would not call it a shooter cause like pat said you can totally play the game without that aspect
Celeste has one of the best soundtracks in recent history. I'll listen to it in my car. Something I hardly ever do with game soundtracks.
I tried playing Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance with friends who adore it. Enemies take too many hits, equipment is not exciting, music is forgettable, and the ugly, ugly models they used for the graphics made it a chore to play. What's a better action RPG?
It’s hard to not understand why people love something I don’t . I generally don’t like games like Skyrim because the open world just overwhelms me but I totally understand why it’s loved . Also shooters are not my cup of tea but I understand their popularity and easy to get into gameplay
@Pro Tengu surprisingly yes actually . I haven’t finished it though and I’ve only played 25 hours so far . When it comes to open world games , I just end up messing around and never getting anything done
Game preservation is so easy and cheap. There. Has been more spent on 1/100 of a cyberpunk update.
Revenge of Shinobi for the music.
Eeee nnnn saying were good in his robot voice at the end proves he's a robot 😁
Pat :"Pat your hair sux"
Me: how dare you
I’d love to see a return of cartridges in the next marathon
Animal Crossing that game is insanely boring.
Yea its bad.
Those are rookie page numbers for instructions to a computer application. I downloaded 100s of pages for LaTeX and I didn't even learn how to use it.
I use to not understand Minecrat and Fortnite. Such a simple time lmfao now I understand and the mystery is gone lmfao
There's been games dev courses in most countries for the past 15 years. I did a course on it 11 years ago for example over in Australia.
the GBA is like 90% of the time shitty licensed games based on TV shows or movies so, yeah you'd have to be a masochist to make a book on that, especially you two not having grown up with "that's so raven" and 2000's cartoons like I did.
There are certainly some unique games to check out but usually it's like a port of a sixth gen game or a 1st party Nintendo game.
Hate watching golf... LOVE Neo Turf Masters...
Ya think golf is boring, wait until you see baseball, lol
The neo geo pocket color version of neo turf masters is very fun also. I play it on my raspberry pi 3b+
In Japan RETRO Nintendo consoles are dirt cheap if you get them at hard off or book off in the junk section. Japanese junk is GameStop prestige 😂 like $3 a console and I think I’m adding more to the price
Thunderforce 4 has such a bitchin soundtrack
I have no interest in basketball. I have no interest in basketball video games. But I fucking LOVE nba jam.
Better question is why Pat hates Mega Man so much.
Not for the sound test but I would put in FFX-2 and start a new game just to jam to the intro!
Journey I couldn't get why it was so popular
I don't get the appeal of "Metriodvania" games 😒🙄
lol me neither, going back and forth doing the same thing over and over, getting lost etc 😂
I do, but I'm tired of it being obsessed over so much that almost every indie game is either that or a roguelike. It isn't really fun for me anymore, nor inventive.
@@MaidenHell1977 I did 🤔
Aussie rules football is a great sport to watch.
There are PS3 and ps4 Aussie rules ga,es out
07:14 took yous long enough to get here [wit, whiz]
I've got news for you Pat, (Sorry to bust your balloon), the dart games are rigged, too.
Mega Man...hate them all! no idea why they're classed as highly as they are.
Final Fantasy. Any of them.
@Pro Tengu Crikey, no. I don't like those RPG games. Not just FF.
So let’s thst mean we’re getting an original game boy guide book
I never really got into 2d side scrollers. I played SO MANY bad ones on the NES, I just burned myself out on them.
What an effing shame... Sux the one company I have ZERO interest in is the one who cares about retro titles & making them available.
This without a doubt is how I feel about Hollow Knight. I love Metroidvanias and side scrolling platformers, but Hollow Knight just didn't do it for me, and I know I'm in a small minority.
Maybe if it wasn't hard as balls...
Smash bros, never got the appeal, tried it a bit and was done with it
Final fantasy 7 faq more than 600 pages, I accidentally printed the faq twice 🤦
