It makes me kind of sad to see Tommy's fall from grace. Some of the games he worked on legitimately are classics. His run on EP was also spectacular- he was a great counter to the other guy's straight laced persona.
I would buy an Intellivision.... original. A couple of the games (lock and chase being the main one, and I think Frogger, Space Invaders, Boxing, Tron, and the frog eating the flies game) I have as my first memories of gaming. I remember the inserts. I remember how everyone, kids, adults, Grandparents... everyone thought the games were so fun and cool.
We are almost 40 years later from that memory. We all carry devices that can play simple cute casual games now. The hdmi classic consoles have been released, the "best of" collections have been released for most systems over the last 2.5 decades... the nostalgia photocopying has been done and there's a billion places to play the games the Amico is going to try to recreate.
I'm 17:24 in, and I was hoping to hear Pat say "cornhole" a bunch. I don't think it'll happen. Ah well.

Klonoa, Silent Hill, amazingly $100 is the lower end for pricey games on PS1, now many of the best ones are $200 plus. I'm still shell shocked, lol. I've started buying digital PS1 games on my PS3 which is something I never expected to be relegated to, but here we are 😄. Weird times.

We used to have an awesome Play & Trade store here locally that you could actually score good deals at every once in a while, and the workers while they were allowed to buy stuff that came in, there was a rule that they had to at least wait a single day before being able to buy the game themselves which was nice. They gave the game at least a single day out on the floor to give customers first stab at it.
I would have LOVED to work there as they got a pretty good employee discount on games there, and they'd often get in some pretty heavy hitters. It was by FAR the best game store we had around here and was WORLDS better than Gamestop, at least when it came to retro titles and systems. It's a damn shame that the store isn't around anymore. I really wish they'd come back.

    • @squidracerX
      @squidracerX Před 3 lety

and @Adam J K -- I get that rarity can make a game more scarce, and people hoard them. So if you NEED this game yeah its probably harder to find. That being said - rare doesn't (or shouldn't) equal hundreds of dollars. Do you "need" it? Or do you want to point to your shelf to impress other geeks? Ha-ha. The Clay Fighters Blockbuster manual is my perfect example of this. People trying to get complete N64 collections feel the need to get this, and the freaking manual goes for hundreds. Its stupid. a terrible game.
Ill perform hobby sacrilege and be honest and say lots of these old games just arent that good by today's standards. Many weren't that good new! Lots didn't get bought at $60 when they were cutting edge tech, I waited for bargain bins ha-ha
"So Action comics is only worth 10 cents?" Could be a rebuttle to that, but its obviously not an equal argument. These game will also not ever hit the million dollar mark (they shouldn't). And they arent as influential, brittle, old, or rare. The market dictates, but man, Klonoa just isn't $1100 good.
Like paying $60, sure thats what it was new. Maybe a little more for rarity. Thats fair. But some of the prices are silly, especially when emulation exists (and no developer is making money off Pat selling a "disc only" of Klonoa at this point). I just sold 10 PS1 games to a guy for $1100. i need money so I'm happy. But I also just sold a box of 100 PS1 games to a young couple a few years back for $60. The games are not worth this much.
He was a rich collector (showed me his game room, damn) and he has cash; so its his money. But I wouldn't have paid that for these games. And nostalgia aside, most people arent buying them to play them, they are hoarding them or "investing". As a guy with lots of old games, some of these are hard to go back to. -- Playing Soul Reaver 2 on my BC PS3 and having to play 50 minutes until you hit a freaking save point argh. Id rather play on emulation in a lot of cases for things like save states. Id so love a PS2 classic so i could ditch my PS2 games at this point.
But yeah, i just had a guy want to buy PS2 Grandia Extreme off me. That should be $20. Its not a great game. But the stupid market says $90 CIB. I offered $80. So he was like "i cant justify that, I have to pass". Hes right. I wouldn't have spent $80 new at the time. At the same time if i can get $90 on ebay (and im not sure if hes a collector or flipper), i cant just give it away. I'm not stupid. And Im broke.
But I do think he just wanted it to play, and thats silly expensive to play that game now, which as a guy who is also more of an enthusiast like him than collector, that does suck.
      its a weird time.

squidracerX well, at this point I’ve literally been priced out. Once in a while I’ll get something special (import shmups that haven’t moved in price for years) but for the most part I’ve got most of the shit I want, and you’re right, there are plenty of other ways to play whatever you want. I only have one computer and it’s pretty much dedicated to recording music, so I don’t like to mess around with downloading emulators and files from sites I don’t particularly trust...I know that’s like a grandpa thing to say, but that’s why I mostly have stuck to the physical media over the years. I have a pretty humble collection, and literally none of my friends care what games I do or don’t have lol. I don’t want to be buried in a tomb of plastic. Whether is albums (okay, yeah I have way too many of those) or video games. Plus I have just the right amount of games where I think I need to finish these before I buy anything else as it is. Hopefully the people who need it like you can benefit and make some money, and everyone else can fuck off. No reason anyone needs to pay 400 bucks for Suikoden 2, or even more for whatever the fuck. I’ve never spent more than 100 bucks on a game ever, and now that I’m getting to the point where i might have to actually start selling shit if I can’t find a job before september, if someone else wants to pay me more for some of this junk, then they are welcome to it when that day comes.

My best Texas Hold-Em memory was playing in a decent sized tournament at a real casino. Was a 60 dollar buy-in if I remember right, and I placed 11th overall out of 150 ppl. Would have done better too if the person I was all-in against hadn't caught a lucky card on the River to beat my pocket pair. I think he caught a straight on the river if I remember right. It was some bad luck too cus I believe only the top 10 ended up walking away with money, so I ended up just outside of the money. Sucked but was a good fun memory.

Poker stories.... while I am no pro by any means, I do consider myself "above average" when it comes to your weekend friendly get together holdem tournaments. Your average player doesn't bluff much, and if they do they kinda don't bluff into situations that make sense. Check, Raise, Check... like their hands got worse... when they almost couldn't have possibly gotten worse by that next card. They don't consider things like table position, chip stack, other players tendencies (if you know them already, or catch on fast enough)... making sure you don't do anything that gives you away... and so on.
A few of my favorite memories are some 1 in 100 type crap where I catch the one card I need for a big when. Last time I played poker it was dealers choice, last hand, stakes were high and I took down a $100+ pot where at that game the average pots were ranging $10-15.
Another was where I was playing in a casino in Pittsburgh at 10+ years ago, and I had a nut flush in which the two other people in the hand, who lost, chewed me out for not going all in. After back and forth for about 30 seconds I said "did you ever consider by NOT going all in, I actually wound up with more money in the pot"? The two guys look at each other, then look at me and go "why do you think that". I said "would either of you have called me if I went all in". They said no, of course. I said, ok... proves my point. I got an extra $20 out of each of you that I wouldn't have gotten if I went all in, and the board wasn't very strong. This is the best part... a pro poker player overhead me, came over and talked to me after the fact and told me that I played the hand exactly right. Had the board been strong, and I still had the nut hand... all in would have been best. It's all about the amount of chips you get into the middle and win... not about how many hands you win, or how flashy the wins are.

I was lucky enough to pick up all the US Shooters and most of the RPGs and fighting games for the PS1 for relatively great prices. I really started collecting seriously around 2012ish,a nd mainly for PS1 and 2. I found a guy on FaceBook and he sold me a bunch of great key titles for like 20 each and he usually threw in some stuff for free. Im talking Einhander, Castlevania (the one with the X68000 port/remaster), a bunch of the Capcom fighting games. I did pay like 75 each for the Tales games for PS1, and I did pay $150 for Harmful Park and Zanac X Zanac for $60 - both CIB and ZxZ is nearly pefect(caught Disc Replay slippin). Now I wish I had a Japanese PS1 or 2 to play them. I mainly collected for both PS1 and 2 cuz there were so many great games and they were relatively cheap, especially compared to NES/SNES at the time, plus both of those emulate decently, where as PS2 really doesnt. Im sure its improved, but PS1 and up I really like to have real hardware.

The rise of PS1 prices is just the Nostalgia Factor moving to the next level. NES has been the Big Dog for a number of years. And that was fine! People that were moving into their thirties and forties were nostalgic about these games a decade ago and the people that had been into that hobby hit paydirt when the Nostalgia Wave hit.
The thing is....It's like a comic channel that focuses on Silver Age comics. It's a period where the comics that truly effected the modern age of comics jumped off! And you can go on about it for a long time. But, at some point, everyone has done it and it's played out. The audience starts to be people coming in that grew up on 70's Bronze Age comics. And if you keep beating that Silver Age horse to death, people will move on to someone that is coming along that talks more about Bronze Age comics.
NES is cool. It was the first console I bought myself and it's the one I stuck with the longest. They have a soft spot in my heart and I love hearing about them. The thing is, we're seeing a new group of people heading into their 30's and 40's and they grew up on the PS1. They've got disposable income and the things they want to reach back into their childhoods for are those games. So, now the prices are going to go up. And, for the NES people that are hating on the PS1 games and the price increase, it's just supply and demand. The same was, and still is, said about the NES collectors. "Who are these people and why are they spending so much money on stupid video games?" But, to NES collectors, they're not stupid games and the desire for that collection drives prices up. The same is happening to the PS1. Those people that grew up on them want them BAD! And they're willing to spend money on their collection! And, not to be disparaging to NES collectors, but with the PS1 being a disc game, it adds that level of collectability for finding good copies of not just the cases, but also of the discs themselves. I'll go on record as saying that I made a solid amount of money last year selling PS1 games myself! It didn't hurt that I was one of those people that kept all of the crap in the cases that came with them, so the stuff I was selling came with the manuals and original cases for the most part. I've sold NES and Playstation...And I've made a lot more money off of the PS1 games! As time passes, I suspect PS2 and PS3 games will be more like SNES games are to the NES collectors. Those games were more accessible, so the frenzy might not be as much as for the first edition console. Although, there are some of those PS2 games that bring a lot of cash. This might be mitigated to some degree, since Gamestop shoved PS2 down everyone's throat until they choked. But, I suspect this market is going to grow for a few years.
In closing, trends change. And if someone doesn't change with them, they're going to be left behind. PS1 is on the rise! NES is always going to have a market. But people are looking to get into a new collectable. You can only go on about Jekyll and Hyde so much. Now they want Lara Croft. Well, maybe not so much. But Silent Hill? Yeah.

Saturn, N64, gamecube, dreamcast games kept a high price. But now by the number games on ps1&2 like your crash, or twisted metal going for more than 40$ is ridiculous.

I think another reason you aren't going to see an N64 classic is that the original NES classic was just a stop gap product in the twilight days of the Wii U for Christmas 2016. They made a single small run and clearly didn't expect it to be as popular as it was. The SNES classic was also a padding product in case the Switch ended up with a slow start for 2017.
The Switch turned out to be a mega success so they can just direct their customers to the paid online service if they want to release N64 games. They just don't really have a reason to make these one off retro consoles anymore.
