- Space, like money, is a limited resource (in our shops at least!) If you wish you had more space in your workspace, here's a thinking hack that has helps me make the most of my shop workspace.

Yes, this is a good perspective. I like this idea. I also like to attempt to get maximal balance between organization, compression, and accessibility. For example, you can have maximum organization but there can be lost space and accessibility . Maximum compression may be good for space but you lose organization and accessibility. Maximum accessibility is great for getting what you need when you need it but space and organization are lost . I'm always playing with the balance to see what will work best for my current circumstances.
Pinned. Brilliantly put: "...to attempt to get maximal balance between organization, compression, and accessibility."
@@KeithsTestGarage Thanks!
Btw. Your channel rocks and I’m starting a binge. Any fav episodes you’d recommend making sure to see?
@@KeithsTestGarage I like the spiral lamp video. It seems to be well received. I cringe at some of the older videos when I rewatch them, lol.
Same. Thanks for leaving up the old ones. Seeing some CZcamsrs’ old cringe-worthy videos was what gave me the feeling of freedom to start my channel and embrace experimental mode.
Thinking is what makes us human. Few people do it enough. Great video.
Thinking is what makes us human. Few people do it enough. Great video!
Nice! I like how you presented this idea of how to consider using a limited resource. I am a software developer and this makes me think of managing shop space like a term used in software development -technical debt
Technical debt (also known as design debt or code debt, but can be also related to other technical endeavors) is a concept in software development that reflects the implied cost of additional rework caused by choosing an easy (limited) solution now instead of using a better approach that would take longer.
Poorly utilized space, letting clutter accumulate, etc. Is a type of woodworking technical debt.
Some useful ways of thinking. Thanks much and thumbs up to crush a troll.
Philosophy of use of the shop. Great choice, thank you for sharing it
I’m certainly inspired when hearing people like the philosophical and economical aspects of this stuff.
If our minds are tools, we need philosophy. If we are working within limits (time, space, etc) we need economics.
what a coincidence. When my wife starts getting loud she quietens right down when she gets the soapy water.
* great vid, thanks
Third time watching before commenting. I've often felt that way in my shop, just didn't know how to put in in words. More content like this that is not the normal is OK with me.
You're giving me something to think about... Getting certain tools closer to where I use them.
Just found your channel and it’s like you’re reading my mind. I’ve been doing the same thing reorganizing my workspace by moving out all of the unused storage items.
I also just showed my wife your clamp video where you talk about saving money on clamps to buy a welder. She agreed that your rationalization is exactly what I tend to do as well. Great stuff!
I assure you that the contents of this video are the extent of your mind that I read... And yeah, isn't rationalization great?!
Wow, this was more useful than I expected. You inspired me to move some things outside (covered area) vs my more precious usable garage space.
*I definitely fell into the trap of "if it fits, it sits."*
I've never related to anything more in my life than being in the middle of something and having the compressor kick on and scare the crap out of me.
Once you switch to a silent compressor you'll wonder how you ever lived without it.
Late to this video, but love the concept.
I live in a terraced house in Hackney London. Space is invaluable! Thinking about how to use it for a veery schmall work area is an INVESTMENT in leveraging the opportunity costs of space the best. In other words, I liked your video.
I really like your honest and humble approach. It might not be the prettiest (why is that so prevailent?) or most modular shop, but it is very functional and well thought out.
It makes me think of the french cleat tool holder hype. It uses a lot of wood and space, often takes long to make, but is not the most space-aware or functional way of making a tool wall.
You're videos - and these style of videos - are great, thanks for making them and keep it up!
Thanks. Yeah I have not seen the benefit of french cleats for shop-related stuff. Positioning stuff close by is important, as well as making efficient use of the super limited space where I stand 90% of the time. I've used french cleats in a hidden fashion for some house projects (such as a coat hanger...you can't see it, it's embedded) but for the shop....ehhhhhh.... A lot of people love them though.
Thank you. You've given me some good starting points on my rather limited workshop, which I am finally able to rethink. First thing I've done is put retractable wheels on my bench. Now I can manipulate the space around it as required. Sounds silly, but it's a game changer.
Super interesting that I found this video "tonight" as I was beginning to do exactly this in my tiny shop earlier today (confirmation I was doing the right thing). Offloaded tools to the shed tool cabinet that I don't need taking up space in my shop. I have WAY MORE to do on my end and this was helpful so thanks!
Good video 👏 enjoy the educational aspect and how to make your space better than it was before
I always learn something. Today, about space and the opportunity of it. Thanks.
Keith, just found your channel, and must say that I really enjoy your content. For this video, I discovered that I spend many hours doing this in my shop but now I have a name for it and I want to thank you for that. Please keep up the good work. Thank you
That was cool! I need to rethink my spending
Awesome dialogue. Really makes you think! Well done!
great video. so many shops aren't organized well and makes everything less streamline
Love your stuff. You’re a logical man.
You have inspired me
Perfect video and explained it very well. Its already got me thinking!
Great conceptualization; gives me a whole different perspective on how I’m allocating/wasting/misspending space :-)
About to do a workshop remodel and those were my thoughts exactly.
I think it's brilliant. Thanks so much for your thoughts, Keith.
Love listening to your logic because it's similar to mine and I feel like most people don't think this in depth but who knows. Most people never talk about this stuff too, I put to use anything different that I like from your insight.
I like your thought process.
Hello Keith, this is the internet. Yes, I like this kind of video besides how-to's and 1-2-3's. Good thinking processes are critical to make a difference in anything. Thanks and keep it up. The internet out.
While I didn’t think of it in terms of opportunity cost I was just thinking how much unusable space is in my shop. Really like how you approached this.
I dig the video. Has me thinking which doesn't happen often. thanks bud.
I like it! Makes sense and gets me thinking
Good video - makes you think about how to improve your workspace. I am going through a bit of a re-org and I like the way you think. Thanks for sharing.
Keith, I like the cut of your jib. You earned a Sub from me. Keep the content coming.
I have a lot to think about now. Thanks for this!
Love it! Too many 123 how to videos on building things like massive Mitresaw stations, drill press tables and so on, and they just don’t work...... when you think about it, thinking, and spring is good!👌
I enjoyed this video's style and content. Thank you.
I appreciate this type of content. Floating ideas/concepts/principles of how to efficiently & enjoyably organizing one's work environment adds to the collective toolbox of ideas. I love looking in others folks toolboxes, both literally & figuratively, as it expands my options for any given challenge. I have a number of folks I value for their work/life experience and each one has their specialties... I often resort to their counsel when I find my experience in a certain task lacking.
Love it
That is a great vídeo
But can you park in there? :-)
We have a small car.... but no.
