  • How to build a Holey Desk - a modular desktop with 20mm bench dog holes and a steel strip along the back to mount things with magnets. A DIY desk with holes.
    I'm a Level 25 Functional Usability Nerd (FUN). Aaaand I finally built my dream desk....tailored to the user...(me). It has 20mm bench dog holes to mount a bunch of stuff as you'll see in this video. Be sure to check out the montage at the end!

    This is essentially a home office desk remix of the MF Slab (MultiFunction Slab) at www.multifunctionslab.com. Instead of clamping areas, it has a steel strip in the back for magnetic goodness.

      Thanks for the note. Get back into it. I've found that re-motivating myself often involves lowering my standards to de-intimidate my mind about the project at hand. As motivation increases, so do my standards. Then burnout. It's a cycle. Burnout usually involves setting my standards too high for that season of life.

    This is such a great idea that could be expanded on. I really want to start a desk company some day because no one around really goes that 'crazy' with setups. Most have basic legs and some have a decent selection of tops, maybe some cable management stuff. Very basic.
    So how would I expand on it? I would design a simple cover so the top can be flush, perhaps secured from a tension release mechanism (accessed from below). Or accessed from above if you don't want it flush. It could be used for adding platforms or small shelves, easily taken apart.
    For that I would want some kind of tension or locking mechanism though.
    At the moment I use poles and super clamps, it's really quite ugly if you're looking directly at them. My main room light is actually set up this way, with a light shining upwards so it reflects as very soft light.

    • @KeithsTestGarage
      @KeithsTestGarage  Před 3 lety +1

      Yes one notable change. I beefed up the back by screwing a strip of hard maple underneath. That reduced monitor wobble considerably.
      But my cherry top is only about 3/4 thick. If you were doing 1” thick oak you probably wouldn’t need to study it up.
      Also I added upside down power cubes (with USB) under each side, halfway to the front, so I could quickly plug in a fan or whatever the day called for. I’ll find a link and reply with it.

    Holey shit with cherry on top! Do you also poop with 20 mm diameter exact to 50 µm?
    You just won a new subscriber. Very inspirational. How can I be a long-time LEGO-fan and Dane, and _forget_ that a LEGO 4×2 is just about 32 mm?

    Wait, your sony professional headphones don't have a cord - whassup with that?

    • @KeithsTestGarage
      @KeithsTestGarage  Před 3 lety

      Hidden feature - yank on the cord hard enough and you'll reveal a hidden jack! Actually, I installed one of these jacks that fit very nicely amzn.to/3meRfQR. And one of these plugs to turn the coiled cable into a standalone cable amzn.to/2LxvGOO. Each wire is actually a bundle of super tiny individually coated wires, so you have to scrape/burn off the coating before soldering, but other than that it was a pretty natural upgrade.

    my only problem with these amazon standing desk legs is the wobble, do you get a lot of it?

    • @KeithsTestGarage
      @KeithsTestGarage  Před 2 lety +1

      If you can afford a nicer stand I’d recommend getting something nicer. But, answers: In sitting position, no. But in standing position yes. A couple things: 1) spreading the legs out a bit helps prevent side to side wobble. (As in, when it’s up, I pull the bottom of the right leg a bit further right.) 2) the monitor arm amplifies the wobble but only in standing position. I was highly annoyed at first but have actually gotten used to it. If you can afford a better quality stand I’d recommend finding something else.

      Cheese is good. I wonder if there's a market for MFE - Multifunctional Emmenthaler, where all holes are 20 mm, on a 32 mm 3D grid.

    You don't buy sticks you buy bars and if it's shorter and smaller diameter it's a rod . It's not wood

      You probably have a point, but my dilemma is that bars are also dessert to eat and places to drink and exams that lawyers take and vertical lines on a musical staff. We need more words.
