    I just bought a brand new 2019 Passport. Love the way it drives, but I don’t do off road! Interior is really spacious. Mine is a Touring and has more bells and whistles and safety features than I’ve had on any other vehicle I’ve owned and I’ve owned some really nice vehicles in the past. We are also getting better gas mileage than they state for it, which is good.

    What I'm getting from this is if you want a hardcore offroader get a 4Runner or jeep.But if your after a nice Family hauler that you can take a family of 4 and a tent camping off the beaten path the passport might do the job. As long as your not trying to make it into the really rough stuff.

  • @SilverScarletSpider
    @SilverScarletSpider Před 5 lety +3

    To me, the best off-roader is always the oldest and cheapest 4WD/AWD car you can find. That way, you can save the money getting a proper lift for at least 8.5 inches, a basic oversized rim/tire upgrade, a substantial brake upgrade, and a good skid plate.
    If you have the funds to buy a brand new car like the Honda Passport, it’s still a mighty fine choice and the best Honda has to offer. No CVT like the Subaru Forester and Murano; while still getting great fuel mileage

    • @rabd3721

      It's also not a significant loss if you accidentally total your vehicle during an off road adventure. Still costly, but not as costly as destroying a pricey new vehicle.

    Personally, I love the new passport! I think it looks great and does truly have a niche in the market. To explain this, I am going to compare it to the Honda Ridgeline (of which I am a fan). I think the ridgeline is fantastic but the styling is off and many people who buy midsize trucks do want the ability to have maximized off-road performance even for most of us including myself will never use many of these features or do any heavy offroading. Simply put, the market is limited and I much prefer the unique look of the 1st gen. Why does this matter? As mentioned the Passport carries Honda's comfortable ride and on-road handling characteristics while also allowing the weekend warrior to tow a small camper, ATV, boat, etc and have plenty of room for luggage at an affordable price point. Now realistically no one is buying the passport as an offroad vehicle but it is small and nimble enough to get to that secret fishing lake or forgotten log road while also providing superior traction in dust and snow covered roads. Now here is MY biggest worry with the passport, I believe the engine is too large... now hear me out, this is a smaller SUV and yes compared to the 4 runners it will most likely get better fuel economy but as much as I love Honda's 3.5 L V6 its a bit large, heavy, and thirsty for a vehicle this size. Now Honda is passing this off is smaller and dare I say sportier SUV what I would LOVE to see and believe would be a FANTASTIC engine choice for this vehicle is the 2.0 L 4 cylinder engine used in the Type R. Likely a sportier feel, more fuel efficient, and more exciting engine for everyday driving. Because once again how often is this vehicle going off road??

    • @MrTemplarViking
      @MrTemplarViking Před 3 lety +4

      But with the 2.0L 4 banger, you wouldn't be able to tow that trailer or boat or dirtbikes.

      The 6 is a tried and true bullet proof engine. I personally love the power. If you keep it long term the 6 will outlast the turbo 4.

    I wish Suzuki would partner with an American company to release the jimmy here. But would this compare to forester?? Personally I would buy pilot just to avoid cvt. With some proper tires I would think that the passport would be ok on light trails, there’s just no under body protection or after market to produce it. Great unbiased review. I only wish (and I’m sure others as well) you shown it handling a few more off-road oriented obstacles. Like actually testing the approach and decent angles in different scenarios, testing the traction of the vtm4, seeing what type of rutted out inclines it could handle etc. Then we’d know it’s capabilities and limits a little bit better in order to make a more accurate assessment of how it stacks up against its competitors. But overall, I appreciate what seemed to be a true unbiased assessment of this PASSPORT👊🍻

That outback did great on TFL test, its totally fine for that Outback not climb over that big rock, it didn't look bad ay all for that outback at all matter of fact it look great for subaru showing they AWD system in its class, please get over that and hand over those keys to TFL. Nice review. Will be interesting to see how one of these will do with a lift and more offroad oriented wheel/tire combination. Obviously it won't be able to compete with real 4x4 trucks in more extreme situations like rock crawling and really rutted trails, but it seems like it will be able to handle some rough and slippery roads. Want to see how it does up Gold Mine Hill and how it compares to Subarus AWD system.

    I think that more aggressive off road courses should be used to showcase a vehicle's AWD capability. For example, in this case, I think a tougher off road course could have been chosen. Furthermore, I would suggest putting the FWD version of the Passport on the course to prove that an AWD vehicle is indeed warranted for the course. Then they can showcase the AWD capabilities of the Passport, and that makes it look better.
    Maybe kill momentum too on those hills on off road courses so that all the pressure is on the AWD system. And don't forget tires make a massive difference too.

I was looking at the Overland or Summit trim if I want everything the Elite has? My only problem is how much am I giving up in the driving and traction difference between the two vehicles. I drive cross country to Utah and spend the winter in challenging snow conditions. During the summer I drive 5 hours to Maine to sea Kayak. Often have to launch at low tide and drive on slippery rocks so off-road performance is important. Can the new Passport handle this as well as the Grand Cherokee?

      If you are on the market for a Honda, you can purchase them via leads makers CarsDirect.com or TrueCar. I've done that 4 times since 2006 and every time I was able to get plain Honda $1500 to $6000 below MSRP and equipped them myself. I was even able to special order one. Never walk-in to purchase a vehicle, that's the biggest mistake people do.

      i visited the truecar site once and checked their prices for a vehicle i was curious about. it showed this curve reflecting what % of the time this car sells at different prices, but it says if you want actual quotes you have to complete a form. i made up a fake phone number but i used my real email address. because i was researching a toyota and i had purchased a toyota before and i was in the toyota database (gave my number to the service department), immediately (less than 1 second) after hit send my (real, which i did not provide truecar) phone started ringing off the hook and my email account, of course, was spammed for days. there was no quote sent as promised. i also got lots of solicitations from dealers of other brands i did not inquire about. you can EASILY beat whatever truecar says is a rare deal on the curve they show by just emailing all the dealers in your area. you can also go to those car buying services from AAA, sam's club (which uses truecar's database), costco, USAA, etc, which actually DO get you a real quote instead of just immediately selling your contact info to insurance companies and dealers, but their quote is still not as good as you could get just by emailing dealerships in your area. don't even listen to anyone talking about MSRP. except for a few west coast dealershjips, paying MSRP is unheard of. what you are shooting for is below invoice, which is what i bought my last vehicle for. lots of carmakers and dealerships regularly discount below invoice, especially high volume dealers in december.

    I wonder what would Honda do to compete with Toyota Land Cruiser. I'm a Honda fan. If Honda can do a little bit more than just family cars & cross overs (i.e. a truck to go against Toyota Tacoma), it would be nice.

    In the end it seems to cost as much as the Pilot. It has the same space as the CRV though. You're paying for off-roading. If you've priced a Jeep Wrangler lately the price is about par. In the end, the decision comes down to the kind of deal they will give you.

    • @thezeroto60outlet65
      @thezeroto60outlet65 Před 5 lety

      John Maher size wise it would compete more with the 4Runner but you are very correct in terms of capability it competes with the Rav4 and now that the Rav4 has Toyotas new torque vectoring system I think the Rav4 would be better on the trails its smaller and has the new system as mentioned !!

    • @jaanfo3874
      @jaanfo3874 Před 5 lety

      RAV4 is compact, this is Midsize. However, this compares closer to the Highlander than the 4Runner just because the 4Runner is truck based. Toyota really doesn't have a midsize two-row crossover though, so nothing in their arsenal truly compares. The Nissan Murano, Ford Edge, and Hyundai Santa Fe are the only other midsize crossovers without a third row that I can think of, and all of those are definitely on-road biased, so this compares favorably against them for someone who wants light off-road utility without a third row or a truck frame. Not that I can think of many shoppers in that category; Most of these will go to on-road folks who want to look like they go off road.

      Jaanfo Basically what I said but yeah the market here isn't very big people either want big 3 row crossover or compact crossover I think it will do okay just because it's a Honda but other than that it's nothing extraordinary

    Good review. Not sure why two videos. The same intonation for every sentence gets old quickly. No one ever mentions how the display is part of the dash instead of popping out of the top of the dash like many models. Comparing this to a 4-Runner is comical...I suppose they both have 4 four doors, that’s a similarity ...
