Terry Kath was the founding guitar player, when he died in January 1978, their sound died with him. They degenerated into a sappy ballads band led by David Foster and Peter Cetera.
Your next Chicago reaction should be the 1970 Tanglewood live performance of 25 Or 6 To 4. Terry Kath's guitar solo will blow you away. I always recommend Introduction, Poem 58, 25 Or 6 To 4, and Byblos as a great range of Terry Kath's work.
This was Chicago's first album 1969. Just a great album.
Chicago was asked by Hendrix to tour with them. Hendrix was blown away by Terry Kath and the horns were amazing, which is why they were asked to tour together.
I missed this when you did it! If I were you, I’d put on side 1 of that album and let it play. First song is “Introduction” written by the late, great Terry Kath, guitarist, vocalist, and composer. I’d also watch the Tanglewood show from 1970. They were a brilliant band.
Terry Kath is excellent on both rhythm and lead and vocals. When he died in 1978 Chicago was never the same...
Truth
They had to change their name because the city was suing them so they shortened it to Chicago, as I mentioned below Terry Kath was the guitar player. Jimi Hendrix once told him he was his favorite guitar player.
Terry Kath was the guitarist. This song was released in 1969. Terry died in 1978 from careless handling of a firearm. He thought the gun was unloaded, and it was, but there was 1 round still in the chamber. He shot himself in the head. It's terrible. He had alot more music to give, and after he died, the band went in a completely different direction that I can't stand - sappy, sugar pop music. You've probably heard this band's big hits from the Terry Kath era like "25 or 6 to 4", "Saturday in the Park", "Beginnings", and "I'm a Man". If you want to do another one, I'd recommend "25 or 6 to 4" live at Tanglewood. You can see Terry going off the guitar.
One reviewer's comment at the time said it sounded like Terry Kath's strings were being whipped instead of plucked. I'm amazed that he didn't break a string.
I had all Chicago albums when I was younger, awesome solo!! Sooo many incredible songs from Chicago!! Thank You Rory and for the person that requested this 👍, 😊💓🤘✌️
Sometimes a band never gets better than their 1st album and for me, that's the case here. Just superb album with this track the cream of an outstanding crop. Oh and 1969..what a year for albums
Same reason most people cite Van Halen 1, and Boston-Boston. Chicago did plenty of great things while Kath was still alive, but this is the most complete record to me. And the Tanglewood show is incredible. This is what rock n roll is all about. I was born in 69, so I didn't experience this from the outset. But I've heard plenty of people talk about the first time hearing Zeppelin 1, etc during this period. Chicago's debut is definitely on that list.
I haven’t heard this track before either, I’ll have to dig out my CDs again.
Still waiting on another Rory performance with guitar?!?! Love your singing voice.
i agree 100%
Terry Kath was a monster guitar player, gone way too soon.
Pure gold Terry was the best ..
Enjoy anything from their first four albums
Wow yeah This American rock they started in 1967, considered as a pop rock band they're amazing his frontman is Peter Cetera , his unsual surname came from his polish and hungarian ancestors with 78 years old I think that he retired from music in 2019
The band chicago has an insignia song '' Hard to say I'm sorry "" an amazing song I want you to react , greetings and thanks 👍👌👏🏻🎸🤘🎼🎶
Oh man - I missed when you posted this. I didn't think you had done it yet.
Terri was only guitarist, rhythm and lead , just like Jimi, who said he was better than himself and invited band to tour with him..
I Love the drums!!! 🥁🔥😊 Just Jamming!! Love the horns and I absolutely love sax, sounds like the movie "Jaws" I love all the different sounds!! Awesome reaction Rory!! 😊
Chicago only used one guitar. The rest was horns and keyboards
Amazing bass and keys and drums were also awesome - totally every instrument top notch
You really seemed to enjoy that. Great mix of brass and Terry Kath guitar brilliance on the 1st 2 LPs. Just about destroyed the grooves me. No wonder Hendrix admired Kath so much.
1969
Can you please do Listen!
And harmonies when they chose to,, 3 lead singers can do that…
