2022 KTM SuperDuke R EVO first ride review - supernaked perfection?

  • The 2022 KTM SuperDuke R Evo gives my favourite supernaked of 2021 a boost with semi-active electronic suspension to give you more comfort when you need it and more… stiffness when the mood takes you. It's a tiny bit heavier and a bit more expensive than the regular SuperDuke - so is it worth the extra? Join me for a UK B-road ride where I try to make sense of this 180hp brute.

    I just bought my SDR EVO yesterday and the way I describe how it feels to ride is like I glide through the roads like an olympic ice skater glides through the ice. While you can tell it’s power is mental, it’s very friendly and nice to ride when you’re cautious and respect the power. Love the bike 10/10

      It kinda does everything doesn't it? Big love - will be interested to see what the 1390 is like next year.

    I love mine. I have the same color. Everywhere I go, people always comment on how good it looks. Was leaving a restaurant and the guy at the table next to me said he stopped at it to look at it on his way in and said it looked like something out of a sci fi movie lol. It’s actually pretty tame when cruising around. But when you get past like 1/4 throttle, the power just explodes. I’m sure that’s due to the way KTM has the throttle mapped. 6th gear is useless below 100mph. Doing 90 and you will be at 3500rpm in 6th.

    I have to say that I have had this bike since 2022 as new and I have yet to ride a Super Naked I like as well. Apart from maybe the new 1390 nothing does it as well as the SD for the street. In terms of fun factor I don't think anything rivals the Super Duke or the 950 Hyper Motard SP. I also have a Pikes Peak and it is very cool but nothing gives that smile factor like a torquey twin. The PP is great for long distance, handles amazingly well but lacks that aggression and rightfully so or it would get irritating on a long distance scoot. Not gonna lie, that new RS Multi looks pretty amazing but I don't think it will do the fun run like a Super Duke.

      Everyone makes this comment, but even with the additional cost it's still far cheaper than my Streetfighter V4S was and way more fun.

    The SDR was my dream bike, but the evo was never considered because they are a lot more expensive over here.
    But then I got a great deal on one and just pulled the trigger. Didn't think the suspension would make such a difference, but man. The automatic suspension setting is insane.
    30 in the city? It softens up automatically. Lots of corners and hard riding? Stiffens up. Incredible machine and well worth the upsell.

    Have 890 R....it seemed really quick when I first got it but now feels a lil underwhelming.....feels incredibly lean so maybe a re map to clean up the fueling...I dont want a pipe.......this is a nice bike.....I love using the torque vs screaming at high revs so these kinds of bikes interest me a bit more

    Tim I always get a kick out of your videos. You have fun and it shows. Being from Wisconsin we are just starting our riding season, so you and your vlog mates get me thru the winter when I can only look at the steeds parked in the garage. At 72 I’d like a demo wack at this KTM cruise missile, but I’ll stick with my beloved Triumph Explorer 1200 XRT. Keep ‘em coming Bruh.

    Great review mate, genuinely sounds like you know what you're talking about. Nice and in depth specs wise but mixed with your own experiences. I spend ALOT of time watching motorcycle publications' reviews and your review is actually better than some of the "professional" ones and I'm not just saying that. I think i'd be more inclined to go for this model over the stocker if it was visually distinguishable from it. I'm actually considering switching back to a SDR or GT from my current super adventure, can't make my mind up just yet.

    The question - "Why did KTM feel the need to add electronic suspension when the standard SDR is so good?" Well the cynic in me says that they did it because the majority of bike journo's (present company excluded) will not rate the KTM higher than the Tuono, even though its a better bike (I've had both) simply because the KTM doesn't have all the tech. Now that the SDR evo has all the bells and whistles it can "compete", though I can hear certain weekly publications now saying its too expensive ....

    • @timrodierides
      @timrodierides  Před 2 lety +2

      That's the thing - as I've said in various vlogs on my new Super Adventure, there are such good winter deals or ex-demo deals on KTMs you'd feel a little raw buying one at list price! I've always wanted a Tuono V4 but didn't fall in love with the one I rode last year… if the speed limits were 30mph higher I'd reconsider!

    • @redline9221
      @redline9221 Před 2 lety

      I'd rather they put money towards making the SDR lighter than towards more tech. The SDR feels bigger and heavier than the tuono when I rode them, even if they're similar in weight on paper

    Great review and like your opinion as well :D
    So, now that you are used to own Super Adventure S and if your insurance company says "go" for Super Duke R would you change in an instant or would you keep it because SAS is more sensible (fair to say). I assume you would take Evo

    • @timrodierides
      @timrodierides  Před 2 lety +2

      I'd stick with the SAS. It's just more versatile - it can do 70% of the hooligan stuff but a whole lot more besides (off-road, long trips, not being miserable in the rain)

    Hi Tim
    Quick question, and I know they’re not the same bike category, but I’m torn. For similar price points in the US, which would you get: streetfighter v2 or this?
    My heart says Ducati but my brain says check this one out or hold out for the streetfighter v4 but that would require waiting even longer to get a new machine *sigh*

    Not really 1500 more expensive.. 1500 odd cost then you have 1050 so that the qs and suspension they have actually works so 2600 that's not taken into account if you buy std 6mth old with under 1k on it the diff nest part of 5k

    • @timrodierides
      @timrodierides  Před 2 lety

      Hmm, the tech pack is still a thing on the regular SDR. It's a bit cheaper at £860. But yeah, buying KTMs at list price isn't a fun game… wait until winter!
