I read Nancy Drew and Perry Mason as a child, but P.D. James was my intro to mysteries as an adult. A friend of mine remarked that she only read mysteries. "Oh, I'd never do that!" I said She said, "Oh, you're just being a snob!" (Guilty, guilty guilty) She loaned me "Cover Her Face" and having spent most of my graduate school years reading "experimental fiction," I found I was delighted to read something that had a beginning, a middle and an end. And mystery reading introduced to all sorts of travel. I made my first trip to London because a Bouchercon was being held there. Indeed, I saw P.D. James interviewed (I swear Queen Elizabeth lent her her handbag for the occasion) as part of the conference. Don't give up on her. She really comes into her own in her later books. I enjoy your videos so much!

Had to chuckle about your comment and the snob-thing. I can relate... ☺️ And no, I won't give up on P.D: James! I have already planned to read the 2nd Dalgliesh in March.

A historical compilation of feminist essay writing sounds good. Not my usual reading topic, but to read the actual writings as a sort of history and timeline of the topic is very appealing.

    •  Před 5 měsíci +1

It's a very educational compilation, even if (of course) not every article is equally good or interesting.

I remember how much you loved From the Wreck, I hope her new one works as well- you’re so right, Australian books are not the easiest to get in the Northern Hemisphere. Very interested to hear more about the Owl book as I do love owls!

    •  Před 5 měsíci +1

It's so sad about Australian literature being so hard to get here. 😞 And the Owl-book is really good!

You are right about Cover Her Face. I think James was too influenced by Christie in this book. The Dalgliesh novels got grittier as they went forward. I hope you will try some of the later books in the series.

@@TKTalksBooks My favorites are Original Sin, Devices and Desires, The Murder Room, and Death in Holy Orders which were written in the 80s & 90s I think. There are some recurring secondary characters that are also detectives in the later books, but the books stand alone for the most part.

I like a cozy read sometimes, I wish Less Than Angels by Barbara Pym was more cozy, I was happy when Tom bought the farm and I wanted to shake Catherine, get a grip, you're being used, as well as I remember, Death at Pemberley was a swift read but yes, not as good as Children of Men.

Oh, that's good to know about the Barbara Pym, thank you, I haven't read that one yet.

My thoughts on Cover Her Face really echo those of @bookishtexan . After the first couple of novels you do get to see more of Adam Dalgleish as a person and a much more individual style of writing. I really recommend them in order too. I reread the whole series about 4/5 years ago and was totally worth it! Adam Dal-glee-sshh 🤓
Feminism across the decades intrigues me too. I spent my teens, twenties and thirties as a feminist before becoming a bit disenchanted by the way the movement was heading. (Now 61) It seemed to me to be more about women emulating men rather than being their own vision of female. I mean this in a general sense of course so please do not feel insulted anyone if you have other opinions. I am always open to other perspectives!

    •  Před 5 měsíci +1

I will go on with the Dalgliesh-series and read the next one soon. The character (poet / police) intrigues me! ☺️And I completely agree with your take on the development of feminism and the current state of it. We are about the same age (I'm 2 yrs older) & I don't now about you, but I became more 'radical' with age....

I was going to recommend The Right to Sex, but went to see your Goodreads first to be sure you hadn't read it yet (you did, happy to see you liked it too!), so I searched for "sex" in your shelves thinking surely there would be few books, but it seems that being a feminist and an Anne Sexton reader will make you read a lot of things with "sex" in it lol.

    •  Před měsícem +1

Had to laugh so hard about your comment. 😂 And Right to Sex was fabulous!

I enjoy P.D. James's mysteries as mysteries because I do like the Agatha Christie style type of mystery. However, there is an undercurrent of homophobia in her novels (at least the ones I've read). It's quite off-putting, and it's the main reason I have not read any of her novels in years.

    • @juliequick5526
      @juliequick5526 Před 5 měsíci

Having reread them in the last few years, I don’t recall this, but will take another look. Agatha Christie has her prejudices too and in the end i have just come to accept them as being of their time. Not right of course…….

    •  Před 5 měsíci

Yes, the work of many authors (unfortunately) of this time period didn't age well when it comes to prejudices...
