Focusing your global south reading on Palestine is an excellent idea. I wish I could go to a bookstore every Saturday as well. But my budget is glad I can’t!

New Directions is a great choice! They have two books coming out in February from Alexis Wright, who is an award-winning Australian Indigenous novelist and member of the Waanyi nation. I'll be checking those books out this year for sure! Titles of the novels are Praiseworthy and Carpentaria. New Directions apparently tried to acquire the rights to Carpentaria when it first came out in 2006, but were outbid by another publisher. So they are really excited to get to re-issue it!
Hi Sarah! I think I first heard about ND from you 😊. And thank you very much for telling me about the February Alexis Wright-releases. I've been meaning to read her ever since she won the Stella Prize for Tracker...
"I'll just go on reading." 🤣 I love this Saturday bookshop trip that you used to have. The idea of getting just the right number to read before your next trip is wonderful and helps with the dream to have a small TBR.

New Directions is amazing!! I'm sad that they don't have UK distribution, and that so many of their titles are published by Fitzcarraldo here so I miss out on ND's amazing design haha I was inspired by what you said re starting the year with a graphic novel by starting the month reading books for my set projects. Hope you have a nice start to 2024!

I am planning on joining your six classics read, and the Book Naturalists but I think that's it for me in 2024.
You've got me thinking of setting my book goal to my birthday ... 131. Seems attainable.
And, I'm still deciding on my first book of 2024, maybe A Little Life.
I find book prize lists aren't my favourite either.

Agree with you on the Women's Prize. This was the first year I attempted to read all of the longlist for fiction, but as you said, it was too much.
Yeah, there were just too many books that I didn't enjoy... Maybe I wll try the Carol Shields Prize this year.
Kusama! I love her work too. Saw a wonderful exhibition in Wellington New Zealand. Never forgotten it. Love to hear and read goals, especially reading goals. Mine started in a small way but already seem chaotic. I am just looking to have a better year overall, not only reading but in every way. Hope your 2024 is a wonderful year in every way?😊

I have just finished the Tate book "Yayoi Kusama" about the artist and her art. I love her dots, but I'm not a fan of some of the expiremental sculptural art she did in the States. I love the Infinity Mirror Rooms and it's interesting to think her popularity increased from people taking selfies with her artwork - definitely visually stunning.Fascinating woman, I chuckled to myself about her trying to convince fellow artists to join her in theatrical displays of nudity in tokyo - no one agreed but in New york these 'body festivals' were more popular.
I can't tell you how much I miss those Amsterdam bookstores...And yay for judging the BTP, fabulous! I agree, Kusama is a fascinating artist and even though I don't like everything she ever did either, she is one of my favorite contemp. artists.
agreed on the women's prize. I will decide when the short list is announced if I want to read it, but I'm leaning again towards the Carol Shield's prize because I found that short list to be much more my type of read.

Happy New Year- As I define my goals for 2024 I plan to join in the Six Classics for 2024. Books arrived or on the way. This is in the non negotiable column. Thank you for the list. I'm also planning on Reading Around the World - your list will do double duty.
My literature background is very dead, white, male heavy - especially American DWMs. It is time to get out of that rut.

I haven’t given thought to goals, nor reflected on the past year. Maybe on the last day. But even there it’s no pressure; I think my first book will be _War and Peace_ which gives me time.
I like the 'no pressure'-approach! And War & Peace will keep you busy for a while. 😊

Like the stepping back from big or year long goals Britta, it gives you time to reassess as the year goes on. I must admit I’ve only ever read one prize long list and a lot of that is for the reasons you mentioned, I don’t read enough to read books I’m not interested in. New Directions seems a great publisher, I’m hoping they’ll do a box set of all the Clarice Lispector they’ve been publishing although perhaps I should try her first 🤔.
Yes, exactly, I think it's helpful to assess the goals over the course of the year. And it's such a pity about book prizes, I have yet to find one that I find engaging enough. Jenni (@jennikreads) is following the Carol Shields and I'm thinking of doing the same. We shall see.
I think it's good to half a look at my goals after a couple if months. Makes no sense to stick with them if the don't work... And yes, it's such a pity about bookprizes, I have yet to find one that really engages me. Jenni (@jennikreads) is following the new Carol Shields Prize, and maybe I will do that, too this year. And a Lispector box set? That would be fabulous!

They carry a wide assortment and I think they have a depot (or several?) in Europe, so the books don't have to come from the UK. They're usually delivered surprisingly fast (I live in the Netherlands). Could be worth a try.
I live in the US and I even order from Blackwell’s quite a lot.

Merry Christmas happy new year ( frohes neues jahr ) mrs britta . I just read about Christmas and celebration of new year in Germany it’s really amazing as well as USA too . Common tradition around world on new year midnight is fireworks display and light shows but unfortunately many people burned and died because of fireworks. As I read on new year eve you have buffers or finger food smaller groups might sit around table for hours , German tradition castling lead after midnight each person melt small piece or lead or tin over candle in small pan or spoon . At capital Berlin each year . Christmas tree originated in Germany and stollen is fruit cake in Germany served in Christmas season . Stocking are filled on 6 th December and Christmas markets, in USA there Christmas towns . Merry Christmas happy new year to everyone around world. Best wishes for you your dearest ones . I hope ican learn a lot from your knowledge.

I have decided to read big books and finish series this year. I usually read 100+ a year, but I am not going to focus on the numbers. Lots of classics… Fewer readalongs, prize lists and judging the booktube prize. I did two rounds in 2023, and it put me in a big reading slump. So not this year.

Your choice of goal number makes me smile. Wouldn’t work so well for me, since mine is October 6th. Written as month/day, it’s a bit low. Written as day/month…I’m not Criminolly. :)
Your plans sound great, and very distinctive in the pool of Booktubers I follow. Very much looking forward to seeing how it goes, and to join is as circumstances on my end allow. I really like the way you talk about getting specific within your goals - that’s something I have to keep struggling with too, and take encouragement from your progress.
A…not really a request, just a note of curiosity: the father of one of my best childhood friends was a Palestinian Christian. If you find anything coming out of the non-Muslim communities among Palestinians or about them, I hope you’ll mention them, alongside the Muslim majority.
2024 will be stressful for me thanks to American elections, with Republicans running on policies of outright eliminating me and many of the people I like and care about. I’ve been planning to focus on books by women and non-binary authors, but find myself needing to build in some re-reading escape time, and alas, that’s heavier on male authors. I’ll be experimenting throughout the year to see how the balance goes, since for me, new-reading escape can come from science and scholarly subjects that just don’t remind me too much of present-moment tensions. It’s just that sometimes when stress is high, autoimmune and other complications shut down my ability to take on much of anything new.
Something will work out, and having goals helps.
I have read a beautiful memoir written by Sumaya Farhat-Naser (Christian Palestinian). It was in German, but Google tells me that there are at least four books by her that are in English.
