I loved Burkie when he was the GM of the Leafs and I love him now.
Biggest issue with the Leafs is role clarity. Too many players who play the same game. Players need to know what they contribute on the ice beyond their speed and skill.
It's like playing NHL21 with only Playmakers allowed in the forward lines.

Just watched the Peter Zezel story where Zezel requested a trade from Vancouver to an Eastern team to be near his dying niece. Its tells a Brian Burke then traded him to a western team as far from east as can be. Anaheim. Zezel quit hockey to be with his little niece as she died.

NY Islander won four cups in a row with a trade deadline deal, Butch Goring, best trade deadline deal...Penguins won first two cups with major deals at or near deadline.
I hope they do not make it in playofs it will be fun to watch how everything burns.
some value in rentals just to make the playoffs
some teams (and young players) need that experience -- and now, not 3-4 years from now
they'll have a better chance in 3-4 years if you start investing in playoff experience earlier
(within reason.... smaller rentals. I'm not say huge gambles.)

This is what the Leafs get for not trading for Tanev. They needed a stay at home, shutdown D man and instead, they got more of the same. They just added to an area of strength. They're still very weak without the puck.

Leafs should overpay in a trade for a promising, young defence man or maybe a high draft pick this summer. Gotta give up some of that offence and cap hits.
First to be traded: Nylander and Kap. Not because they are bad but because they are a heavy cap hit, for players less elite than Marner and Matthews.

Your crazy I’m a Boston fan and I would love to have nylander he has been one of their few consistent forwards this year and simmons sucks he’s old not fast not close to as good as he was in philly. William is a hell of a player his contract looks great now he’s not the problem
