Note) Charging is the action where a player takes more than two strides or travels an excessive distance to accelerate through a body check for the purpose of punishing the opponent. This includes skating or leaving one's feet (jumping) into the opponent to deliver a check, accelerating through a check for the purpose of punishing the opponent, or skating a great distance for the purpose of delivering a check with excessive force.

jared neufeld Note) according to the OFFICIAL NHL RULE BOOK
      Rule 42 - Charging
42.1 Charging - A minor or major penalty shall be imposed on a player
who skates or jumps into, or charges an opponent in any manner.
Charging shall mean the actions of a player who, as a result of distance traveled, shall violently check an opponent in any manner. A “charge” may be the result of a check into the boards, into the goal frame or in open ice.
A minor, major or a major and a game misconduct shall be imposed on a player who charges a goalkeeper while the goalkeeper is within his goal crease.
A goalkeeper is not “fair game” just because he is outside the goal crease area. The appropriate penalty should be assessed in every case where an opposing player makes unnecessary contact with a goalkeeper. However, incidental contact, at the discretion of the Referee, will be permitted when the goalkeeper is in the act of playing the puck outside his goal crease provided the attacking player has made a reasonable effort to avoid such contact.

I feel like tkachuk is a bit of a rat but I don't think that was what this was about at all. I'm just surprised how many people who "love" hockey but are up in arms about Kas responding that way. Sticking up for yourself or others after a big hit clean or not has always been a part of hockey. Hell you couldn't get too close to The Great One without Marty jumping all over you whether you touched Gretzky or not. In a way you could argue one or both of the first two hits were charging based on distance traveled and the violence of them.

@@skateordiedev The general rule people used is if you leave the ice, take more 2 or 3 strides or deliberately take yourself out of the play to hit an opponent. Leaving the ice is easy to call the later two are just judgments. The hit before the fight should of been a charge. He made the choice to try to injure a player when he wasnt even close to the play. I used to make those hits all the time growing up. I would get a charging penalty half the time.

Obviously this has been blown up, and other players are going to catch on to the way he plays and probably find it sensible to wear him down.
