- Bring on the dark! We discuss a classic style this week - English Porter.
We keep the seasonal theme going as we taste and discuss Mike's straightforward Porter.
Many brewers use Porter as a background to add other flavorings. Things like vanilla, peanut butter, bourbon/wood, mint, marshmallows, hay, old socks, etc. and etc.
But to make any enhanced flavor addition, the base beer needs to be excellent. In this video, we discuss how Mike crafted this 4.2% ABV Porter modeled after a standard British or English Porter. He made this beer to be a good base for your first Porter and possibly to add other flavors to in the future.
CHEERS!

Porter needs brown malt in my world. Love your videos and your support for British beer. Cheers!
great vid. I get giddy each time I hear brewzilla btw
"Don't put weird things in it" - got it! lol. BTW if you guys would be so kind to put the recipe and details in the comments it would be great. I would love to brew some of these if you feel it'd be worth it. I've not brewed an English Porter before.
I recently put some ginger in my Porter. I think I prefer it without the ginger but in the 90s I kinda liked it.
I looked at Jamil’s recipe for “Robust Porter” in Brewing Classic Styles. It’s actually fairly close to the recipe Mike described here, in terms of grains and proportions. The main difference is Original Gravity and, consequently, ABV.
Jamil’s recipe is OG 1.064, ABV 6.5%
I like Fuller’s London Porter, and have tried to make something similar in the past.
This year I tried a different recipe. This is from a CAMRA recipe book, and supposedly is based on a commercial beer sold in the UK as a Porter:
70% Maris Otter
10% Brown malt (Crisp)
10% Dark Crystal (Crisp)
5% Roast Barley
4% Chocolate (Crisp)
(I know there’s a bit missing; it’s in the brown and crystal)
Mashed at 67°
Bittering addition only, to 34IBU
WLP002
OG 1.048
FG 1.011
I quite like it but i struggle to understand how it’s differentiated from a Stout.
It’s a good time to homebrew if you like styles beyond IPA and lager. It’s a desert for most others especially English and Belgium styles 😊
Good video. I think the only experimenting should be with the malts and yeast. I've made porter with American and British base malts and tried different specialty malts.
Very rarely see Porters in pubs around here, NW England usually one stout , usually Guinness.
Great video guys! Porter is my favorite style so I always enjoy a story about brewing one. I recently brewed a porter and used a pound of Carafa Special III that I had leftover from a midnight Saison awhile back. It's an excellent beer. Looks great. Smells great. Tastes great. But doesn't taste like any porter I've ever had...
Another great video, thanks! Speaking of low attenuators, how does the Windsor strain compare to the Lallemand London? The only added flavor a dark beer needs is black patent -- love it!
where can I find the recipe? I don't see it on your site
I'll try and get it into the YT description box soon. Cheers! -Mike
