  • We dive into a Hoppy LupoMAX Wheat Ale fermented with Kveik Voss just in time for warmer weather.
Mike brewed up this reddish amber wheat beer to use up some LupoMAX hops. He used Citra and Sabro LupoMAX hops on this one. Playing with a little mash hopping and then nothing but late boil hop bursting with this one. Check the recipe below.
For further experimentation, this beer was fermented with Kveik Voss. Voss is one of the cleaner kveik strains but it is known to show a little orange and citrus qualities which Mike hoped would pair well with the Citra hops.
This beer delivered some string citrus and citrus pith notes. The Sabro brought a strange not quite lime/coconut thing to the table. It sort of seemed funky. Can't say the Voss did anything special here aside from fermenting relatively fast even at room temperature. Mike doesn't really see a reason to ferment at 90F degrees.
    CHEERS!
    Recipe:
    3.5 gallon batch final
    3.5lb American 2-row
    3.5lb White Wheat malt
    1oz Midnight Wheat for color
    1oz Lupo Citra-Mash Hop
    1oz Lupo Sabro-Mash Hop
    2oz Lupo Citra-10min to go
    2oz Lupo Sabro-10min to go
    Lallenand Kveik Voss
    Mashed grain at 150F 40min, 158F 15min, 168F 10min
    Fermentation at room temperature, ~65F

Respect for making a beer with ingredients you don’t like, that’s a good challenge

Mike is going to be soooooooo disappointed in me ... Sabro is my favourite hop. I do the Sierra Nevada clone and dry hop with Sabro ... absolutely delicious.

I used Kveik once, and only once haha. Gave the beer a sharp, acidic, almost acetic aroma/flavor. Cheers guys

I perceive it as very tart, almost like a sour. I don’t care for it.

Cracking video guys, I've just pitched the yeast into my Höegaarden clone but I've used Mandarina Bavaria hops as I didn't have any orange peel to use - wish me luck

I'm also on the dislike Sabra side, I do like coconut but not in a IPA/hoppy beer. Kveik is a bit hit or miss, some of my beers turned out great, but the ´funky' kveik things is not great for every beer type.
