👍👍 Thanks Greg
Another great front porch video Greg. I always enjoy these.
Thank you Michael. I'll try to do more since the weather is getting nicer.
Idk a the LGS this week there was a very nicely done 1917 made into a Fitz...looked like a big old thing I could see Conan rocking that
A 1917 made into a Fitz! Wow!
@LionquestFitness beautiful I should have asked to film it I think it was 1.3k or more wonder who did the work I didn't even look good enough to see if Smith or Colt to be honest. Wish it had been worse shape 600 then I would have been haggling lol
They always looked cool but also like "an accident waiting to happen" to me.
Conan would probably have a Webley of some variety, or a S&W Hand Ejector or a M&P.
Love that old smith revolver thanks for the video
What a cool idea, Greg! Love this.
Thanks Santee!
BTW - if you could ever find any of Howard's Beckinridge Elkins stories in print you'd thoroughly enjoy the rough humor of Hillbilly Westerns.
Good stuff, Greg.
Thanks for the fine video.
You always have fun and/or interesting vudeos. Thanks
I could see Conan brooding around a small fire cursing the wench that tricked him out of his treasure as he cleaned his pair of 1911s and a Colt Detective. By Crum!!, he will return when she least expects it. Arnold was the perfect pick to play the character.
🤣
Cimmerian September is coming! A reading challenge to revisit the Conan stories.
Outstanding and agreed on Conan's firearm and bowie knife!
Nice choice
I totally agree. A lot of people in the past didn’t like the M1911 for concealed carry due to its weight and bulk. But Conan was a big, buff barbarian from the far North (Scottish Highlander or Viking is what I think Howard had in mind). It would’ve been nothing for him to lug that brick around. He might’ve even gone for an extended slide version if he could.
While Conan was a barbarian, he wasn’t the dumb stereotype seen in movies, TV and role playing games. He was well traveled, could be the cunning sneak thief, and he knew how to speak multiple languages. Maybe he’d pretend to be as dumb as civilized people believed but that was about it. Elaborate stratagems weren’t his strong suit. But I suspect he’d be OK with councilors and cunning men using them at his command as King of Aquilonia.
That's a good summary of the character in the stories.
Thanks Greg. I have a 1911 and it too is a bargain model - a Rock Island GI model. I like it. I like my Smith Hand Ejector 38 too... guess I'm not Conan lol.
Me and you both!
Conan liked his battle axe and swords. He might’ve had a 1911 tucked in the back of his pants, but he would’ve carried a short barreled 12 gauge shotgun, by Crom!
Greg, find a Tisas government 1911A1. I have one and out of the box it is perfect three years old and no problems. But Conan would have carried a 45 acp revolver like Indiana Jones. IMO..
That's a good possibility!
Loved my Tisas 1911A1...even with the tiny G.I. sights it was easy to shoot nice tight groups...
@@jeffanon1772 I had my eye on a Tisas Commander with the rounded grip, but it got gone before I could get another gun sold to make a down payment. If this gun goes well, a Tisas may be in the future.
@@LionquestFitness they're great guns....after decades of Dept issued striker fired pistols, retirement meant that I could finally carry anything I wanted & I stumbled across a great deal on a Tisas 1911A1 in 9mm ....& it was a true joy to get reacquainted again with the 1911 platform.
After the usual 2-3 hickups during the first couple of hundred rounds, it settled down & was totally reliable & as stated, even with the tiny G.I. sights, it was easy to produce nice tight groups.
Tisas did a great job of copying Browning's design right down to the convex grip screws..which allow a .45ACP cartridge rim to be used as a screwdriver to replace during a field expedient repair.
In fact, Browning designed the 1911 so that a fired .45ACP cartridge could be used to replace a lost recoil spring plug if needed.
I finally sold it & upgraded to a Springfield Range Officer because of the better sights, but if necessary I'd happily carry that Tisas for self defense.
@@LionquestFitness but I still say the only gun fit for Conan to carry would be a Desert Eagle 🤣🤣🤣
I wonder why 1911s weren't more popular with police departments back in the day. It's a solid and reliable design with good magazines in it.
It wasn't that reliable. It could and did jam, though not often. Not every police department wanted to train up on how to clear jams quickly. It was also big and heavy as was the ammo. So police tended to favor the .38 Special.
@@EricDaMAJ I guess they are made better now (tolerances and all). Personally I carry a five shot J-Frame for personal protection. I figure I'm unlikely to need it. If I do need it, it is comfortable enough that I will have it. And it will probably be sufficient for the job.
@@Fudmottin The 1911's rep has a strange history. They were dependable back in WW I & II compared to most other automatic pistols. But they served so long and suffered such maltreated in the military that by the 1980s the last military ones made during the early 1960s were in dreadfull sorry. I served in '86 and can attest to that. The rifling was gone, the springs were potatoes, and the bluing was more overcast grey.
What really poisoned the well were the lousy knock offs bad gun companies sold when the patent expired. During that time the only good 1911s left were in Boomer hands, museums, safes or made by boutique gun companies for absurd prices.
Gen X and Millennials found 1911s wanting compared to a basic Glock. Yet they got an earful of Boomer Funds talking up the 1911 and disparaging the "Tupperware gun."
In the past decade or those generations got rich enough to try custom 1911s and some companies made quality, affordable 1911s. This caused them to change their minds (very grudgingly in many cases) about the 1911. So now it's making a mild comeback.
That 1911 looks good in your hand.
It felt good too!
I could see a Conan carrying either two Colt's or S&W 1917 revolvers in .45ACP or two 1911s in either .38 Super OR .45ACP.
I saw a comment the other day that I really liked. It said, a 9mm will sometimes expand but, a 45 will never shrink.
That's for sure!
Greg, got to agree Robert E. Howard created some special characters especially Conan. He was around when other authors like August Derleth and L. Sprauge DeCamp were writing and they and others were responsible for creating the SCA or Society for Creative Anachronism when people frequently used their imagination. Thanks much my friend!
The SCA is something you don't here about much these days.
Did you know that wrestler Andrae the Giant carried a 44mag Desert Eagle on his ankle.
The knife.
Great video, have a safe week.
Hi Dani, you have a blessed week from the true king of kings and Lord of lords.
@@LionquestFitness Amen buddy!!!!!!!
Hi Greg, Conan usually carried a large sword, what we in hema would call a longsword, and a dagger. I can picture the 1911 to play the role of the sidearm, but I think Conan's primary would be a sawn-off BAR or a Tommy gun. He picked fights with groups, some powerful full-auto fire would have been usefull.
Sounds reasonable to me, especially during his mercenary period.
Always the contrarian, I like to think he'd have carried a 4 or 5" S&W Triplelock in .44 Special. Mom always told me "you just gotta do something different now, don't you?". As always, she was right.
Well, you know, real life FBI gunfighter Jelly Bean Brice carried a .44, he nicknamed "Ole Lucky" so that would definitely be in the running.
Good morning Greg. I think you’re right conan he would have carried a colt 1911. Really enjoyed this with my friend. 👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks Al!
I ran chips mags in my combat commander. Never had a problem! They worked every time! Tried some Wilson mags… had malfunctions out the wazoo!
It is funny how different mags work in different guns. Now the McCormick mags are sold under the Wilson banner.
As far as fictional characters that carried firearms go, The Phantom was famous for the 1911 handguns he wielded. Conan, I could see with a Desert Eagle in .50 AE. If Vinnie Jones could pack one in Snatch then I think Conan could also.
Those "1911's" have proven themselves for well over 100-years, you can't argue with success ⚡
I love a good 1911! What about the possibility of a good 45 Colt revolver? Great video Greg!
The knife, of course. The guns would be black magic. Krum would disapprove.
My only experience with Conan comes from the Arnold movies. Watching your video and your remarks about Howard, his era, and likely inspirations, I decided that Conan would have likely been seen carrying a pair of Colt Dragoons. Or fast forward a bit into the 1930s, either a pair of S&W registered magnums or M1917s. Anyway, excellent video.
Seems plausible to me.
When I try to imagine Conan with a gun I just keep picturing Arnie in terminator 2
That's a good analogy.
I loved the Robert E. Howard stories and the later books written in partnership with (or perhaps by) L. Sprague DeCamp. Conan dispised magic/sorcery and had an affinity for fine steel. However, if he did get beyond that and carry a handgun it would be a big bore revolver, .44 Magnum or larger and definitely vintage Smith and Wesson (pre-locks). The revolvers would be stainless steel like his favorite swords. A modern day Conan would carry two guns, one a snubby with fixed sights (his back up gun), worn in an ankle holster and the other a six-inch with adjustable sights worn in leather holster on a three inch wide leather belt, with an enormous Bowie knife on his non-dominant (Conan doesn't have "a weak side, just two strong sides) side to balance the weight of the revolver. Conan would also wear body armor as he always donned his chain mail whenever possible in the later books. Why revolvers? Simple, raw power. The things that Conan fights (monsters and such) are not about to be taken with the relatively weak .45 ACP cartridge. Plus, Conan fights up close and dirty, he would need guns that, once empty, could be used to bludgeon a mythical beast to death. The six-inch barrel makes a good grip when using your empty gun as a club. Polymer is NOT an option.
That's a fun question and some great history! I'll go out on a limb and guess a Winchester 1887 shotgun with the barrel and stock cut down. And he'd carry it cross draw. Although the 1911 might be a little more practical!
Keep us posted on the Girsan, by the way... I love my RIA 1911, but my local shop has a couple Turkish 1911s for cheap, and I'm intrigued...
Thanks for the video!
Ha, now that is thinking out of the box. I could see him keeping that shotgun under a trench coat. I'm going to try to do a more indepth review of the Girsan in the next couple of weeks. Right now I shoot better with my RIA GI model, but I am still getting used to the Girsan.
I'm gonna go with the rugged and extremely durable .44 Mag Ruger Super Redhawk Alaskan (the SP101's extra large brother)... More than powerful enough, but not with too much recoil - and quick to draw in a close quarters self-defense situation, as a snub nose. 😉
1911s feel pretty good in the hand. If an autoloader was going to lure me away from revolvers, it would probably be a 1911-type pistol.
😅 Me and you both!
If is pre WW2 Conan would have carried a Colt New Service in 45 Colt I'm sure. Then in the late 50s he would have changed for a S&W model 29
The Atlantean sword. The CONAN sword was an absurdly large sword of a king. In the book, the king is a giant. The Atlantean, if we're a handgun ,would be a large unwieldy flamboyant piece. This is why I chose the Desert Eagle in 50 A E.
I think he would lean toward a revolver instead of the mighty 1911a1; either a big bore Colt, Smith and Wesson or maybe the British Webley (while not as beautiful as the American revolvers they have a clarm as well ). He was a barbarian and while having the power of the auto guns the reliability of the revolver would have been needed as well.
Conan was a smart man and a quick student of combat equipment. But in What If #43, it looks like he has an N Frame revolver on the cover.
Is that the issue where he tangles with Captain America?
Hi Greg, I think Conan would carry the 1911 just for the stopping power of the 45. 🤠🇺🇲
Conan would carry a Pair of .50 cal Desert Eagles! The Golden Guilded ones!! 😂
We all know Conan went for a great broadsword, four “feet of Valkarthan steel.” But, by Crom! A brace of .45’s would come in handy! I, too, loved the stories. Many are still in my library. It’s unfortunate that Howard’s suicide at 30, after he heard his mother was in a coma, overshadows the other aspects of his life and leaves the impression of a weak “Mama’s basement” kind of guy. He was an interesting man and his stories will live on.
If you've never seen it, the movie The Whole Wide World (I think I got that title right) about Howard is well worth the watch.
My friends in Little Rock are putting, or have put out, a chronology of the art of Robert E. Howard. The books feature all of the art (novels, comics, etc.)..
@@tylermorrison7051 That is pretty cool. A bit of trivia here and take it for what it is worth. President Obama was a Conan fan; especially of the graphic comics. I don't remember the source, but I read it some time back.
That’s a good looking 1911 Greg, I especially like the ambi safety as a south paw shooter. Looking back I haven’t handled a 1911 since my time in Viet Nam as a Navy Corpsman (medic). Hope all is well w/you.
Thanks my friend. I'm no connoisseur of 1911's, but I've owned a few and so far this one is looking like a keeper! Stay safe.
Given his massive bulk and strength I would say a pair of desert eagles in 50ae. He could handle them if he can handle that massive broadsword! obviously he would need a gunsmith to tune them and make sure they meet his standards of reliability.
Enjoy your new 1911, Greg!
Thanks Tom!
As soon as I read the title I knew you would bring up the 1911. This was an interesting video.
Thanks!
Grenade launcher, with a bandolier of rds.
I wonder what kind of knife he'd carry.
It would have to be a Bowie of some sort I'd think
@@LionquestFitness Probably.
A Bowie is a shoo in. But if he served as a mercenary overseas he might've gone for the Kukri knife. That's a man's knife too. If he served in WW II he might go for the Marine K-Bar knife. Or maybe even the Fairbairn-Sykes knife. The Fairbairn-Sykes knife doesn't have the field utility those other knives have but it's a purpose built easily concealed assassination blade.
@@EricDaMAJ Good points. A Kbar would be very utilitarian.
@@EricDaMAJ Most likely.
Well I just started watching... so there may be a punch line here but I'm pretty sure Conan was a Sumerian.... but I'm wondering if Cimarron Arms isn't going to be brought into this somehow lol
😂😂
That’s just Greg’s laconic way of speaking. On closed caption they write Lon quest instead of Lion. 😂 he is a character, I love his style!😊
He'd carry a pair of Custom made, for him, Detonics Long Slide Double Stack 1911s in 50 GI.
Big game!
@@LionquestFitness Big Dude.
I have all the pulp stories of conan in book form.
I did too, once upon a time. They were published by Lancer in Great Britain and had the Frank Frazetta cover art.
@@LionquestFitness Now think of this what would a modern day john carter carry? sine we are talking old pulp books.
@@Moss500. Yeah that Disney movie was a disappointment. But John Carter today? He very much had a Victorian sense of chivalry. In today's time, rather than the fighting man, he'd fight on a different scale in diplomacy and espionage. He'd carry a Browning Hi-power and be versed in fencing, old school karate, and stick fighting. But that is just fanciful speculation. So what says you?
@@LionquestFitness I can see that for him. Doing the spy bit I think being ex army he would tote a 1911 I dont think a 9mm. And that movie was bad but most are now. I would like a good remake made. Now Tarzan I think would tote a big knife maybe a 357mag revolver and have a side kick Jai and fight to help people and animals.
Lionquest, did you ever have a Ruger P90 45 ACP? If you did, your opinion? I have a chance to get one with 3 mags at a good price. Enjoy your channel and your story about meeting Mr. Holster. May he RIP, he seemed a wonderful fellow.
Greg, in my opinion, you're one of the premiere, must-watch guntubers. By Crom! Your stock has gone way up. I had no clue you were into Conan. Are you also a fan of Edgar Rice Burroughs? Tarzan and John Carter are also very cool. BTW, my friends in Little Rock are putting out a multi-volume set of books featuring all of the Robert E. Howard art. They did the same with Edgar Rice Burroughs.
I spent my teen years reading Tarzan, John Carter, Conan, Solomon Kane and many other fantasy heroes created by Howard, Burroughs and Fritz Leiber (The Grey Mouser and Fafhrd). John Carter was a particular favorite.
@@LionquestFitness You've made my day, Greg. Now what we need is a video of you and some other like-minded individuals playing a fantasy tabletop role-playing game. "Greg, you're being attacked by 10 orcs. What do you do?"
I forgot to mention that Roy Thomas, writer for Marvel and DC Comics/writer of the Savage Sword of Conan, Conan the Barbarian, etc., was originally 40 miles from where I'm located. His Conan material is generally pretty well respected.
@@tylermorrison7051 Roy Thomas was a name I remember from my comic book reading days.
@@LionquestFitness Roy is still alive and well. Met him 3 times. A real nice guy. On a side note...You were into fantasy novels, comics, and guns?? You're practically guntuber royalty now, Greg.
45 long colt or 44 spl in a revolver. Might have been and option also. Bet somewhere he would have also wnd old Winchester 1897 riot shotgun also. As for a kinfe, i figure a good old bowie. If he had carried a 38 ,i bet he would have done like John Benteen's character Neal Fargo in the Fargo series( kindle on Amazon) that i read as a kid in the 70s who took and cut the round end of the bullet off and then cut an X to have it work better. He probably would have had a switch blade hidden somewhere on him for back up. But who knows for sure.
Also Craig ,what brand of knife was that.
Mike, it is a Chipaway Bowie Knife made in Pakistan. It seems well made, but I haven't put it to hard use.
fun question !!! I never read any of the comics, but certainly saw the movie... I'm guessing he would have strapped a tommy gun over his shoulder if he was inclined to carry a gun, and they first came out in 1921 so the time frame would have been appropriate 🙂
Got to have that Chicago Typewriter Joe!
Boa noite meu amor americano.
The 1917 Fitz Conan would have in one hand with Sword in the other in order to drive his enemies before him czcams.com/video/f52mWh9yqbg/video.html and most important to hear the lamentations of their women! A 1911 would likely be backup shoved in the back of the pants and maybe a dagger in the boots.
Many people have Been killed with 38 in the past .
That is true.
Conan would’ve carried all of them
nice pistol. how's the trigger? that's what makes them so great, that and the heft to handle such a big round. i put ambi safeties on both my billboard gi rock island and my argentine sistema. the ria is my bedside gun to get me to the 12 gauge. if you ever see a llama minimax ii (made in vitoria before llama went bankrupt- not the ones made by former workers later) at a good price, i think you would like it. short barrel, great trigger, and double stack. it's the only llama i would actually carry. it goes on the right side as back-up to the 605 so it doesn't need an ambi safety.
I've been told certain makes of the llama were some of the best 1911's ever made.
@@LionquestFitness they had a reputation for soft metal and spotty quality control at times, but they even extensively advertised the minimax as having an "upgraded new steel design", whatever that means. mine runs 100%. I typically like the astras and stars better, in that order. i usually use a blue astra a75 in 40 cal as back-up in the winter and a stainless a75 in 9mm in the summer. they use the same mags but they hold one more 9mm round than 40. i just traded for a firestar plus in starvel finish that may take the summer job as it is double stack. i haven't shot it yet.
@@fbweaver63 Nice collection.
By Crom, and by Mitra! Conan would not carry a 1911...he would carry a BRACE of Government Model 1911 pistols, chambered in .45ACP, of course! The duplicitous, effete poseurs can keep their plastic 9mm pistols.
🤣🤣

@@tylermorrison7051 Oh the horror!
I have much respect for the 1911. Not being a large man, I sometimes need to be more discrete in what I carry and how. That said, I transitioned to a shoulder rig for the ranch carry (climbing in and out of the truck to get out and do tasks). It is a copy of the leather shoulder holsters the military had in the 40s. I about have it broken in now and yes, my older Springfield GI model works well in that holster. There are many days when a shoulder rig will not work so a leather Yaqui holster at the 3 o'clock outside the waist with G19 for max physical mobility while working.
Thanks for sharing that.
When I was.a kid back in the late 1940s, earley 1950s, I used to like the Phantom comic series. He carried 2 Colt 1911s. There was also a movie serial. The Phantom was an American adventure comic strip, first published by Lee Falk in February 1936. The main character, the Phantom, is a fictional costumed crime-fighter who operates from the fictional African country of Bangalla.
I enjoyed watching the movie serial on You Tube with Tom Tyler recently.
Greg, I’m thinking Conan would’ve carried a Ruger .454 Casull.💪💪
Didn't think of that one!
