    Excellent review, very informative for us amateurs. My 50 year old son years ago sold the Mizunos I gave him, did not play for a number of years, and now wants to get back in the game. I have strongly recommended that he buy Takomo irons, most probably the 101s since he told me he doesn't want to go back to blades. Every review I have seen of Takomo has found them to be extremely playable, high quality clubs.

    The nice part of Takomos is they sell the heads by themselves. I had some Elevate 95 shafts and used the 101 heads-- and presto, game improvement irons for my travel set (and pretty much the same as my Hot Metal 921s with the same shafts).

      I would happily do them, if they would entertain my request to send a single 7 iron to me. I've seen one review of them (a very very popular CZcamsr) and am worried over the forgiveness of them as they don't seem that helpful from off centre hits.... Maybe due to how I test and the unique way I test golf clubs, that this may well be the reason why they are being so reluctant to send me a single iron for testing 🤔🤔🤔🤔

      The 201 might be like the Mizuno 223 (243 from next year) with the micro-slot.

    Really good video Jay. I watch most of your stuff but when you say the 101T’s are very good but not class leading I’m not sure what you mean in the sense of how much performance (efficiency?) gain there is in the difference? I do understand the possible benefits of greater choices on premium brands). Keep up the good work!

    • @AskGolfNut
      @AskGolfNut  Před 7 měsíci

      Hi Anthony, what i mean is that with the most up to date designs and metals used, that the premium manufactures are eeking out every bit of performance and also forgiveness from their designs. DTC's are generally a couple of years behind in their designs and thus may not suit golfers miss strike location. In true terms many golfers wouldn't even see the difference and only when critiqued on the likes of GCQaud could you pick them apart. Especially for the gulf in cost between them, the main stumbling black for golfers would be the lack of shaft option availability. 👍

  • @gregcarnall9097
    @gregcarnall9097 Před 7 měsíci +1

    Love the look of these and considered them, but i dont need the 4 or 5 iron, so cost per useable iron suddenly spikes up. Also having just had a fitting for the ZX5 irons i tried the KBS tour lite which looks like a stock shaft and in theory should suit me as per the Mizuno swing analyser, and the one i would have chosen. But after hitting it i hated it, compared to the Nippon 105 tour the difference in feel and performance for me was massive!! So i would have wasted £518 plus import tax!! I just think you are taking a chance with direct to consumer unless you know the shaft offered is 100% right for you. Other than that another great review :)

    • @wrexz
      @wrexz Před 7 měsíci +3

      They sell just the heads and you can have them built locally with what ever shafts you want

    • @AskGolfNut
      @AskGolfNut  Před 7 měsíci +1

      Absolutely agree and yes also to the comment reply by another viewer but then yes you would have to then source shafts and get them built etc which unless you are a tinkerer the whole process can be frustrating. I'd always suggest people know their fitting specs before undertaking any purchase at what ever cost level as any money spent that's wasted is wasted regardless of the amount.
      They DTC brands offer a different option in the market and a very very welcome one, but one still has to be aware of their own requirements and if a DTC brand is an answer for them individually 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

    You already eluded to going to the 101 for the longer irons if you hit a 7 iron around 78 mi/hr. Should you change the lofts of the 101 to match the 101t in the 5 or 6 iron for gapping and decent angle? Unfortunately no place to test direct to consumer irons. Thanks, Ric

    • @AskGolfNut
      @AskGolfNut  Před 7 měsíci +1

      At 78mph 7 iron I'd definitely be thinking about weakening the lofts on a 101 to match the T's for additional launch help in the 5 and 6. Possibly even go to a 5 hybrid instead of running a 5 iron but that's absolutely an individual decision that the golfer can make. I go to a Hybrid in the 4 and 3 but have regularly wondered even at my speed of 95mph 5 iron that going to a Hybrid or more helpful iron (like this test) would work better.....

      @@AskGolfNut thanks for the feedback. I currently go from a 6i to a 5 hybrid. The gap between the two is about 20 yds. I need an iron that will either fill that gap or at least provide a lower ball flight for situations were I need to keep the ball flight low. The hybrid launches pretty high. Good for decent angle into greens. This is why I have considered putting a 5i or a utility iron in my bag. I have room since I only carry a 5w, not the 3w. Any thoughts on that would be helpful. Without knowing your strike tendencies I would never really be able to give an honest answer. Basically the more varied your strike and the more help with launch required then the more helpful the iron needs to be. Although I have taught and Custom fit many high handicapper golfers that hit the middle fairly well so they don't need the additional help from a bigger model, they just need help understanding where they point the club face and what path they need to swing the club on 👍🏻👍🏻

    These irons feel great at first, but they are very pooly made. If you don't pick it clean, the heads start bending back and then break off. They're good for about 12-18 months, but I've had them start bending in less than a month. I sent them back, thinking bad batch, it happens. Nope, replacements also bend and break. They actually had the audacity to blame KBS, which is the shaft that they come with. I let KBS know and they had a word with Takomo about throwing their name under the bus. Stay away from these clubs unless you want to be buying new clubs every year or two.

      First I have heard about this, would be interested to see hear what the defect looked like and also what where the reasons for the bending back. I'm assuming you mean that the heads were bending in servere loft decrease with the heads impacting the ground? I'm very surprised that these have reported to bend in this way. They are made of fairly soft steel bmin relation to golf clubs but not the absolute softest so would be intrigued to get to the bottom of the actual reason why the broke? 👍🏻 👍🏻
