James...something that I've been paying more attention too recently, on scoring irons, is the landing angle. Angle along with spin determines stopping power. Based on some testing I've seen, a distance iron with a bit less spin can still stop quickly when it has a steep landing angle. Personally, I can't imagine what would justify the additional expense of the PXGs...unless money was no object and you just liked the looks better. Great comparison review!
I have a 0311ST 3i I customized into a 2i. On clearance at $99. Wish now I had ordered every club still available at the time. Feels incredible. Never used a forged iron before
@@coleb13 Yes they should be fine. Just that they have smaller heads with little offset and more traditional lofts. If you want the forgiveness of more offset, larger head and a couple of degrees stronger then the 101's are probably the best option.
Hi James, thanks for the review, based on your critique I would take the Takomo clubs purely on price. I know PXG are relatively expensive clubs, but in all the reviews I have seen their performance does not match up to the price. The only downside with Takomo is trying them out first as I believe you can only purchase them online. Anyway, neither set is on my list of potential purchases - thank goodness.
nice irons and great review....i am torn between the 317T's and the 311 p / xp or the TAKOMO 101 / 101T......I am 58....8 handicap...looking for forgiveness , softness and distance too....which would you think ? have a driver swing speed of around 90-94 mph.......thx....cheers from Canada
So, I’m your honest opinion, would you go with the takomo irons, Caley irons, or something similar to those? Thanks. Looking to upgrade from my strata irons to start.
Great video James. I’m intrigued by the takomos and actually thought about getting a set. However the shaft options do not fit my need which is dynamic gold 105. So ended up getting the pxg. And since I play with 1/2 a set (4,7,9,gw) they weren’t that expensive anyway and they had free shipping for a couple of days last week. Shipping costs with pxg is the biggest robbery in the industry but hey it’s part of their business model. I’ll report back once I play with the clubs.
Absolutely love your relevant content!! Im torn between takomo 101T… and holding my breath until November and blindly jumping into costco’s irons. I just have NO CLUE if Costco will produce leftys, and if so… how hard they’ll be to find!
I ordered the takomos instead of waiting to see the Costco irons. I can’t imagine they would be that much better but the Takomos 101t is a very clean looking club. The Kirks won’t look as good.
I just traded my Callaway Diablo Edge irons for a set of Taylormade Tour Preferred MC irons and absolutely love them. Price would be around $300 if I bought them in this pristine condition so I think price only matters if you have to have new clubs, and I don't
Completely agree with how expensive it is. I came back to golf last year after a 23 year layoff. I'd only ever hit in the high 90s before that. Decided to get a £299 set of RIFE irons . Also decided to get my first ever handicap , put in my first 3 cards and got a 23.6 hcp in October 2022. Don't play often due to other commitments and now after another 6 rounds of golf I'm now off 8.5 ,( for all the doubters/haters I have screenshots to prove ). Would I really have benefited from a £1500 to £2000 fitted set ????? and would I have enjoyed it more ?? , don't think so.
So in 9 rounds 23 years after being a high 20s handicap you’re a single figure. I don’t think any screen shot will be convincing. Gonna need to see some swing videos to even remotely start to believe that lol
@TripsView that's the benefit of me knowing the truth and not needing to prove anything to haters or doubters. Plus those rounds took a year with lessons and practice in between so believe what you like.
In all fairness the new handicap system will show massive changes very quickly, in time it will sort itself out. Awesome to come down so quick, hope you’re still enjoying your golf with less shots, keep it up 👏👏
So true, until at least 20 cards are in it doesn't get to a settled figure.Pity there are some who just need to give negative comments , but I will continue to improve and enjoy my golf . Thanks
Club fitting is all about lie angle, swing weight and then shafts that fit your swing. For example, i play x100 tour light 120g shafts, -2' flat at D4 swing weight. I will be purchasing a set. Ill then have my shaft swopped into these irons. Ill have tekomo build them to -2' flat and ill do the rest getting the Swing weight to D4.
It really is ridiculous how much clubs cost now a days. It keeps golf from being accessible to the masses. I'm still using g10's but plan on upgrading in the next year. I'll buy something used again
I wanted some 101Ts but it was backfired numerous times, so I just gave up on them. I have the King Tour MIMs now I got for $379. The only thing with those is that instead of a 33 degree 7, I wish that they could be bent to 30. Unfortunately they are cast. But they feel awesome. I can only get 155 out of a 7. Would like to get 8 more yards with that club.
They’re not really cast. Not really forged. Metal injection molding is kind of it’s own thing and you never wanna bend a club 3 degrees anyways. That’s messing with offset and everything. And 155 7 iron isn’t awful but maybe work on swing speed and contact. I have a 33 degree 7 iron i210 and can easily carry it 180
Would be interesting to see how the Caley 01T perform against the pxg and also the Takomo with them being even cheaper. I am currently thinking of changing my irons, not been playing good all year so can’t justify the big price tag, watching review after review, the Caley is grabbing me along with the Takomo. Currently using a set of ping G425 with graphite which I’ve had pretty much since the launch date, very much fallen out of love with them now
I have the same clubs but with steel shaft. These takomo irons do intrigue me but they’d theoretically be harder to hit than the pings being the 101t is a players distance and the g425s are game improvement
Caley 01 is more aligned to the 101 and not 101t there is video on here. I'm 99% going to pull the trigger on 101t. I'll then get the angles adjusted after warranty as my 5 iron and 6 need to be adjusted only. Unfortunately it's all clubs get adjusted or not at all by takomo
I bought 101t’s. I have lost 10 to 15 yards per club vs my Mixuno zx’s. Are they sending better clubs to the evaluators? I’m baffled. I expected better.
Remember, golf is an industry where we are consistently told to buy the latest and the greatest because the pros are using it. Would love to see a comparison of those old Nike clubs you had with the new ones. Old versus new is always interesting to me. I have a 25-year-old ping my day putter that I'm still using despite having tried all the new ones.
Iv got the 101t well the Chrome has totally come off the bottom and on tour I still play to 0311st and I hit a lot of balls still look the same way when I left the tour trailer 🤔

You can‘t compare irons with different shafts. The Takomo feels so soft due to the very smooth KBS tour 120 shafts. Heads are at least 40 %. The right shaft is allways more important.
So why doesn’t Takomo sell an iron test set, you get one 101T, 201, 301CB and 301MB., all with the same shaft choice. Price them at say $250 with a 60 day buy back value of 200 when you order your set? This seems like a simple solution for the direct to consumer vendors. If they would like a player pick which iron to order that would make it even more telling for the player and Takomo. They could even get away with charging extra for the choice option.
if you know your iron specs, maybe custom order a set of Tacoma heads & specs and you'll save a bunch of money then spend the xtra money on a golf bag, beer, golf balls, gloves, beer, tee's, rangefinder, hotdog & beers at the turn, sunscreen, green fees... just my opinion.

For me, at least you can go to a pxg shop and be fit and test all their products, and walk away with a set that’s perfect for you. To do that with takomo you have to buy just the iron heads, then go to a fittings a buy the shafts, grips, the fitting itself, and the assembly. So it would cost the same…
I play with whatever feels good & makes me feel confident vs look at price & guess that’s why you got your overpriced Porsche 😁 as long as I get value from them overtime then I’m happy as life is short
Simple. Massive companies spend millions on marketing and exposure. Boutique brands don't. They all get their clubs made in the same factories, for the same low price though.
I’ll do this video one better. Stop buying clubs in stores. Buy clubs from companies selling direct. Not only will they be a lot cheaper, but the clubs will perform just as good, and most of the direct sell companies provide an e-fit guide at no additional cost, along with options for upgraded shafts and grips (for an additional cost but still a lot cheaper than if you bought shafts and grips at a store).
No body needs to play with irons that cost over £1000, look at Matt fitz, uses old irons and plays some of the most incredible golf. Let's be real too everything that is now made is just reproduction of existing and slightly older irons you just can't engineer a stick with shaped piece of metal anymore than they already are.
The PXG irons blow away the Takomos. Not really comparable. The PXG fitting is second to none and the irons you get, well, you won’t get a better fit. Takomo makes a decent club but talk to anyone who has been to a PXG fitting and the truth is buying discount irons that are not optimized is the real waste of money. Takomo is an iron blank they have massaged and put their name on, while the 0317T is the result of substantial R&D, probably the most advanced hollow body iron we’ve seen to date.
I can personally attest to this! My PXG fitting was the best experience I’ve ever had when it comes to fittings… Got previously fit for P790’s at Roger Dunn’s… Limited shaft experimenting and basically swung a few irons on a bounce plate… ended up with clubs off the rack… Go to PXG, experimented with 5 different shafts, although the fitter nailed it with the first option, we still tried the other shafts and it was amazing to see how bad I could strike the ball with the wrong shaft for my swing. Ended up with a heavier shaft, a more compact head (0317 T) and -2 degree lie… My ball striking/dispersion is now eons ahead of what I could produce with previous irons and all with way less effort and club manipulation… Completely revolutionized my game… I’ll be playing PXG for as long as I’m able to play the game… Going in for the long game fitting next…

Sorry you’ve had such a bad weekend Peter 👍🏼
I haven’t James but honestly it’s the biggest con in golf constantly comparing clubs regardless of cost. If your swing isn’t there any new club won’t make you better, regardless. Say hello to Frank, he knows I don’t have bad weekends 😊
I would buy the takomo.
ROBO I would play either of those beautiful irons! Actually waiting on the Takomo prototype driver which is in transit right now! 🐊🏌⛳️🦅🇺🇸
