Probably my favourite track by my favourite band and guitarist and song writer. Glad you enjoyed this unparalleled live version.
Absolutely!
Exactly the same for me mate
It competes with Romeo & Juliet for me.
You will never ever hear or see anything like this again 🥺
At least we got to see it once! So good! They were all at the top of their game! 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
Fact
This band outshines anything I've ever listened too , everyone a true professional in their own right , together they are DIRE STRAITS , thank you for a memorable performance.
They are one of a kind! 🤘🏻
Simply unbeatable Dire Straits brilliance...Stunning!
Such a great performance!
Great reaction to one of the best rock tunes ever written.
The song accompanies me for a lifetime.
So much emotion, story-telling (rise and fall of an entire region, personal emotions of leaving it all with your loved one), just incredible.
Great reaction to a song of my life. Thank you.
Linus from Switzerland, born 1966
That’s so awesome! Thanks for checking out the video ❤️
AND THAT WAS JUST THE ENCORE TO THE CONCERT!
🤯
Alchemy Live is the best live performance ever, the whole record
I think everyone here is a star. They all go together and without overshadowing anyone. And best of all, they enjoy their work and infect you with their energy. There is not a single song on Alchemy that is not great. But telegraph road gives me goosebumps every time I listen to it. The last part transports me to a highway at full speed.
True musicianship for sure! All of their parts and playing is so well done
That's epic on all angles a band that knows how to play live music
One of the greatest songs that describes the birth and growth of a town in the US, written by one of the UK's greatest song writers and guitar players - Outstanding song and live performance. Got to add - the ending, major chills!!!
💯 Such a killer tune and outstanding performance! Thanks for swinging by the channel! And that ending was straight 🔥
Mark wrote this song after his tour bus traveled down the actual Telegraph Road, US Highway #23, that runs some 70 mikes along the border of Detroit. He and the tour bus driver had a long conversation about the rise and fall of a once great city. This song could describe any large city that has fallen into blight and decay.
Wonderful ..brilliant..will never forget seeing them in concert
MK composer, poet, lyricist, singer and the best guitarist ever. His work will go down in history.
No doubt! Such a beast! Thanks for swinging by the channel! 🤘🏻
I actually live on the Telegraph Rd. in Michigan that Knopfler wrote this song about. It is said that the group was in the Detroit area to do a show & were driving along Telegraph Rd. one day & he was amazed at how the road just went on & on without end.
Super cool! Thanks for sharing and swinging by the channel!

Mark Knopfler, Lead guitar
Hal Lindes, Rhythm guitar

And for these shows, additional guest keys Tommy Mandel.

💯 So good!
That was superb and your manner of contributing was absolutely fine. The southern accent was soothing and complementary to the tone of the music. Great stuff. Sheffield, South Yorkshire.
Thanks so much for the kind words and glad you enjoyed it! Have a great one! 😁
Because I am a bit older now, I am very grateful to have seen Dire Straits live four times. Outstanding.
Wow!!! That’s so amazing! Lucky you! What an incredible band and phenomenal musicians! Thanks for sharing!

Awesome
I applaud your way of responding to this spectacular performance with enthusiasm and appreciation for all the elements that make this so epic. You're right that the performers are at the top of their game, here with Mark and Terry Williams being the highlights, and that the song takes us on an epic journey with beautiful pacing and variety along the way. Mark plays with incredible clarity, melodic quality and creative flourishes. It's the kind of solo guitar playing that very few guitarists can do--where the playing is like a singing voice going through a range of expressions, rather than just doing some fast playing with no substance to it.
You nailed it about substance as opposed to just shredding! Thanks so much for the kind words and the thoughtful comment! This is such an iconic performance from incredible musicians! 😎
It was a joy to watch you react to what is without doubt one of the best live performances EVER ! I was in a pub back in the day when I heard this sound come out of the Juke box - it blew me away ! It was Dire Straits who hit the ground running with Sultans of Swing. That was in 1978, and I don't think a day goes by that I don't listen to them. I'm now 77 years old. I was a teenager in the sixties which was the decade that ushered in the greatest music metamorphosis, and I got another crack at it tn the 70's with the phenomena that is Dire Straits !! - Keep em coming. Best wishes from across the Pond !
Everything I’ve heard from this concert has been incredible so far! Thanks so much for checking out the video ❤️
Uk music has and always will be the best and most original in the world.
This was incredible! Thanks for watching!
I love watching your reactions. Your enthusiasm is infectious and adds to the music we are listening to.
Really appreciate the kind words!
Thank you for a great reaction man. Of all the people reacting to music, you are by far one of the best. Why? Authenticity. Knowledge and for offering genuine and realistic feedback. Love your work. Keep it up!👍🏻
Thanks so much, wow that really means a lot!
you cant compare Mark to anyone, great reaction mate
Appreciate it! Such a beast!
lol, i was lucky, i was a teenager in the 70s so i grew up with talent, unfortunatly its all taletless today@@setonhillstudios
@@gilfinzi922 I think technology serves a big part of that! People don’t want to put in the 10,000 +Hours it takes to become proficient at their instruments. Instead they want to press a button and have the computer do it for them! 🤦🏻♂️
Mark and Elvis are the coolest people to ever walk the earth :)
No doubt! Two amazing artists right there! 😎
I knew Dire Straits from before they hit the big time. They became and remain my favourite band. Not only is Knopfler one of the greatest guitar players of all time, but his writing is top notch. The poetry in some of the lines is extraordinary. "Running every red light on memory lane" is one that will always stick with me. Also, he was surrounded by class performers, from guitar, to keyboard, to drums. I was lucky enough to be at the Alchemy concert between deployments with the Royal Navy, and was actually present for the night they recorded Sultans. I recall feeling hollow, almost empty during the track, but by the end I was filled with such joy and appreciation.
Wow! That is so awesome! It is amazing how music can take us back to another time! Appreciate you swinging by the channel and sharing! 🤘🏻
Watched this 20 times since posted ... why? because your reactions, emotions showing, obvious pleasure in feeling this song's tempo, dynamics and syncopation changes, and insightful comments raises our appreciation to new levels. Your reactions are contagious and genuine. Thanks again.
I should add that the ways that you react and respond should be watched by all other reactors as to how this should be done. Adding value and genuineness is a great way to teach others.

I saw him play a solo show in Indy about 20 yrs ago, and it was spectacular. It was at the Murat Theater.
Oh wow! I bet that was legit! So talented!
Got to listen to Brothers in Arms, the black and white music video. Emotional.
We’ve had a few requests for that one! Definitely on the list! Appreciate it!
I will always be here for a Dire Straits reaction!
New to your channel, but glad I found you! May I make a few suggestions for future Dire Straits reactions: The official video for ‘Money For Nothing’ from ‘Dire Straits (Live) - On The Night’ 1992, it’s one of the all-time best guitar riffs! Another mind-blowing (although more somber) track to check out is Brothers in Arms; I would suggest watching the official video first, and then checking out a live performance to appreciate Marks extended guitar solo improvs. I also really like the upbeat “Lady Writer”, which is a little shorter than some of their other tracks but very enjoyable, especially Mark’s signature style.
Great reaction,I've honestly watched this performance at least 50 times.amazing.
Thanks for your reaction to a sublime song, my personal favourite from my favourite band. To many more songs!
No problem, thanks for swinging by and checking out the video!
i think Dire Straits were at their absolute peak during this time.
They were
Excellent, fantastic, briliant. Loved your comments. The band was ok too. Joking ! Great video. Thanks again.
For me it's Alan Clarke on the keys that shines on this track. Terry Williams on drums on Sultans & Mark is always immaculate as it John I on bass.
They’re all so good!
Hal really gives it on this too!
I'm glad you said this. AC doesn't get a lot of love (in YT comments) in the shadow of Mark and Terry, but there's a whole intricately woven question-and-answer going on between keys and strings throughout the performance.
The best band ever, at the height of their careers…..simply perfection
Unbelievable and a joy to watch! Thanks for hanging out for a bit!
What I love about Dire Straits is not only their talent and ability to write and perform amazing tunes, its that they look like they are genuinely enjoying themselves on stage. As you said, they feed off each other and they also allow a moment for each member of the band to shine. They also feed off the audience with dips in the tempo that allows the enthusiasm of the audience to be heard.
The entire Alchemy Live concert is fire. Telegraph Road, Sultans of Swing and Brothers in Arms really allows the band to bring everything they got to the table.
However, there is another song, which you may know and have most likely heard, at least in part, that is best to review using the official music video instead of the live versions. Walk of Life is a song that goes back to the days when Mark Knopfler was just starting out, playing music as a busker in the London subway system. If you listen to the lyrics, he lists out some of the songs he would play or he alludes to them ("the song about the knife" is in reference to Jack the Knife).
Not only does the video show the band playing a live performance of the song, it also uses sports bloopers to show you have to take your licks in life along with the high points.
Hence, the Walk of Life. Mark's brother is also in the band for this video (white suit, purple head scarf, no shoes). The band is having so much fun in the video. It makes you appreciate the music even more.
Warning: The music in Walk of Life is fresh and catchy and it will live in your head for a while. You may also find yourself belting out "Woooo-hoooo!" for no reason.

Mark has to be one of the greatest singer/songwriters /musicians of our time.
DS "Tunnel of love" is a story about Marks hometown. It's as important a piece as any on the ALCHEMY album, also check Private investigations, Romeo & Juliet. The whole album is excellent. I feel sorry for today's youth that missed out on this style of class.
Seems like the entirety of Alchemy is amazing!
@@setonhillstudios Check it out, if you can find the actual "full" recording, the album is only part of the experience but I don't know that the full is on 'film' only on "tape" but it's worth hunting out👍

Every band member, a master of their craft. Loved the reaction. Please check out Tunnel of Love ( Wembley 85) for what I consider one of the best guitar solos ever. Keep 'em coming. 🤟😝
So good! Thanks for the suggestion!
Thank You Australasia is even better in my opinion. One of the ultimate solos ever. In my opinion, of course. The Wembley one has less of a story and seems to wandering around aimlessly to a degree. The Australasia version has more of a story to it and more emotional note choices and phrases. I don't want to sound pretentious, but it's true. The whole concert is on CZcams.
@@kentl7228 will track it down and watch..thanks
I was in Hammersmith Oden West London that night back in 1983 aged 29.

As I said after Sultans, I was there, at Hammersmith, the whole thing was brilliant, even at age 18, I knew how good it was.
This is such a complex piece that we didn't think they'd be able to play it live, how wrong you can be!
This was the encore, I don't know how they played like that for 2 hours or more.
Every musician was at the top of his game and the best in the business at the time.
just brilliant, so glad you enjoyed it
It was a killer performance! Even more amazing that it was at the end of such a long show 🤯

I don't know if you noticed, but Dire Straits were one of the first bands to use wireless radio technology to connect to their amplifiers. I believe Pink Floyd did it a few years earlier. (Early 1980's)

I was fortunate to see 2 gigs on this tour- nothing different in each one- immaculate both times. Please have a look at “ Tunnel of Love” from Wembley, 1985, and also “On Every Street” live from 1993
Something a little bit different, but 20 years after this clip, they were as musically tight as ever!

Only Bob Dylan can match the story telling, similar tone of voice, but few can match the guitar playing with or without a pick.
He’s one of a kind for sure!
Terry Williams has to be one of the best drummers ever. Have a listen to Tina Turner's version of Steel Claw with Terry and Jeff Beck. Every single note from the drums means heaven to me.
I forgot the line up:
Jeff Beck - Guitar and solo
Terry Williams - Insane drums
Alan Clark - Keyboards
Hal Liden- Guitar
John Ilsley- Bass guitar
This must be what heaven sounds like.

Also, Private Investigation live was epic.
Mark’s brother is usually the rhythm guitarist. Don’t know why know why he’s not playing. However, kudos to DS for giving The Rock n Roll HOF the finger when DS was inducted. When you’re inducted you have to pay for EVERYTHING. From air fare right down to dinners & your seats. F that!

@@setonhillstudios Please consider how triumphant the guitar is at the end of the last solo. There is the largest "disconnect" in one of Mark's songs, since his singing is rather melancholy... Somehow the guitar annnounces the success of the Telegraph Road! What do you think?

One of the greatest songs ever and an amzing performance. Every time I hear this, the only song that comes to my mind that kind of evokes a similar feeling is Bruce Springsteen's "Jungleland". If you don't know that one, check it out.
Never heard of it, definitely have to add it to the list!
Can anyone else make a stratocaster sing like MK does?

Saw 'em live in '82, at Western Springs Auckland. They were huge here in NZ, where we bought more albums per capita than anywhere else on the planet ! Sir, I think it's time you tried the Grateful Dead. Consider a live Eyes of the World from '74.
Oh snap! Might have to check them out! Appreciate it! 🤘🏻
So here's the thing about the genius that is Mark Knopfler's sound - his guitar sings, and his voice simply commentates on what his guitar is singing.
Think about that for while...
My favorite song by them. Thank Goodness you didn’t do Sultons. This is soooo much better. The keyboardists a star. Mark finger picks! Oh yeah! He actually wrote this on the bus to Detroit on Telegraph Road. It’s a real road. It’s the story of the road. I’ve always wanted a Dobro.
Incredible song and performance! Thanks for watching!

Awesome, thanks for the recommendation!
The best of the best… Alchemy is the best LIVE Album of all time
So good!! Loved this performance! Thanks for watching! 🔥
@setonhillstudios - you're a drummer. For all the nasty jokes us other musicians tell about drummers and bassists, in our hearts we know that without you guys we can so easily sound like shit. You know about lock-in, about how the drummer, assisted by the bassist, is so often the glue that holds the band in sync through tempo changes, through mood changes or through the moments where the damn keyboard player wrote the song, thinks he's the second coming of Mozart and throws a new time signature at us every three bars...
With a good rythym section it's hard for a band to go wrong. With a bad one, its hard for them to sound right. With a decent drummer who feels the song, we dont need no stinking click track :)
And didnt Terry just prove that on this cut? I was lucky enough to have caught the Alchemy tour in London and there wasn't a bad track in the setlist... but this one was way up there, close to being the best of the night.
Being a drummer I am biased BUT I couldn’t agree more! And you’re right, Terry showed how it is done on this one! Everyone on the stage sounded great because they knew he was rock solid! Such an incredible performance and I’m glad that I got to watch it! Thanks for the insight and swinging by!
Eleven.
Have you heard of Richie Kotzen? He started with Shrapnel Records way back doing mostly instrumental rock music. He’s developed his finger picking style through the years and is phenomenal singer. He’s been playing in Winery Dogs since 2010 with legends Mike Portnoy on drums and Billy Sheehan on bass as well as several side projects.
Richie Kotzen is a beast! Love his stuff with Winery Dogs
Audience reactions spoil everything
We ain’t for everyone! Thanks for giving it a shot anyways ✌🏻
Two nuclear bombs at the end!
🤯
Dites moi que vous avez des origines polonaise, vous ressemblez comme 2 gouttes d’eau à mon oncle sans cheveux !
It would be nice to believe this sounded as good if you were there. It didn't! The sound was too loud and simply muddied. The sound on this video (as all live videos) was remastered in the studio. Doesn't detract from the great musicianship but very few performers have a good stage sound.
Great point! I’ve played on same stages where I can’t hear anything and I’m just playing on a hope and a prayer! 🤣 Nowadays, with in ear monitoring systems it is much easier to get a great mix and maintain it night after night but back then that wasn’t even a thought! Thanks for swinging by!
The sound at this show was never muddy.
An exquisite masterpiece !!!!!
Absolutely!
UNREAL! What they did during that show😂DISGUSTING, so much they're good, like Led Zeppelin, at the Madison Square Garden 1973, Pink floyd, Pulse, or Hendrix at Woodstock, or Band of gypsies, it's unreal, ridiculous, so much they're good, coming from another galaxy😂👍🤭Peace from France ✌️🌹
Crazy talented for sure!
