Epica, Nightwish and Within Temptation were top 3 for more than 10 years! Wow
And they all have Dutch lead singers!
@@Minifliek Nightwish for a long time had a Finnish lead singer, and then a Swedish singer. But if you look at the most popular singers you'll see that the Finnish singer was on top the longest, even after parting with the band.
@@Jurgen_Ibro Tarja is G.O.A.T Symphonic metal singer. I love Sharon (from Within Temptation) but for me Tarja is All time #1 female metal singer and for most of the metal enjoyers.
@@VakhoBLT I wouldn't be so sure about that.
After Forever broke up a long time ago, the hype around them in 2022-23 is only because of Floor.
Yeah that was a weirdly high spike though.
@@LordKilmir Album Rereleases by the record company.
it is based on internet search. that is more likely related to a 2022 Movie
Might be but AF was in the list the whole time. amazing for a band that broke up years ago.
Yeah i get shocked and thought the same, there is my Floor
Quite surprised that Epica never spiked to the top spot - they are definitely the 2nd best known symphonic metal band
Epica are definitely well known and liked within the genre, but compared to NIghtwish I don't think they're nearly as popular. They seem to have too much death metal influence and growling vocals for some fans. Not for me personally, Epica are my favorite in the genre, but I don't see them being as accessible as a band like Nightwish.
They may, someday. Let's face it, Nightwish is getting older and Epica is younger. I hate to think it but Nightwish may decide to retire someday. They've certainly earned the right to rest on their laurels if they do choose.
@@ShearWater509 Floor is only 42 years old. The band is unlikely to retire anytime soon.
The metric is internet searches, and the OP says the data may be a bit off. There's a lot more ways to measure popularity: album and ticket sales, Spotify data, Facebook followers, etc. From the perspective of the band members, no matter how many times someone searches your name, if they don't BUY anything, you're not going to consider yourself successful.
In terms of commercial success (how much money they make), for most of the past decade Nightwish has been #1 and Epica #2. The individual band members in Epica might even take home more cash than the members of Nightwish, because Epica tours about 3x as much, and I think they might have more equitable contracts. (All I'm sure about on this last point is that in 2020 Floor was complaining that she didn't make as much money as the guys did. The lady has 3 horses--I wouldn't complain if I made enough money that I could afford a home in Sweden and 3 horses! I'm pretty sure she brings in more money than her husband, too.)
@@ResurrectionDreams Yeah, I'm pretty sure they never expected to be as successful as they are! They make the music they wanna make, and don't constantly chase radioplay with boring, generic borderline pop songs.
nightwish forever and ever
Epica clears I’m afraid
It's interesting to watch because if you followed this genre all this time, you kind of know why things were trending down or up at certain times (like album releases, hiatuses, lineup changes, taking a break to do a movie, etc...)
The only criticism I'd have is that the changing scale of the graph sometimes makes it look like popularity of smaller bands is declining when it's actually rising, but the only way around that problem would be a super duper widescreen.
@@ShearWater509 or excluding Nightwish & Within Temptation for the sake of narrowind down the scope, haha.
Nightwish... my favourite band for more than 20 years now... then WT, Epica, Sonata Arctica, Delain, Kamelot... what an awesome genre...
No Sirenia? :( Perils of the Deep Blue and The Seventh Life Path are such masterpiece in my book
EPICA will always be my number one
Of course the almighty Nightwish occupying their throne since forever! Favorite band til death!
Almighty? Lmao simp much.
Blah blah blah trash
@@s1mperadicator13 your the one crying about epica
@@user-bq8jb9hy5e said the one who use Emppu DP. LMAO Pathetic trash
Well they occupy according to this video since 2004. Many of us are to assume that they were the most popular before then. Because remember they gained lots of attention the 1-2 years before Tarja left. So anything before like 2003, they weren't Almighty. Also why start in 2004 and not the year the genre Symphonic Metal started. Why start at the random year of 2004. So ot isn't technically their throne, ot was someone elses, they just stole it. Plus Anette doesnt get enough credit, she did after all help propel Nightwish to the mainstream audience making Nightwish more accessible. That's they only reason why they are as big as they are. Not to take away from there talent, they are all super talented and awesome artists. But because lets say a band like Epica, who is heavier and contains growls pulls them back from the mainstream audience. Plus Symphonic Metal has multiple subgenres that should have there own history progression like this one. Because so many other good yet unknown symponic metal bands are out there but cant be shown because of the bigger bands.
EPICA, my absolute favourite symphonic metal band, foverer and ever! I say "favourite symphonic metal band" because I have two favourite bands, the other one are the kings of folk metal Eluveitie. Of course it is a matter of taste and every single band is very talented and good in their own way!
I like some epica songs but listen all albums, pls no.. Too much symphonic

Aren’t Wardruna, Faun, and Ensiferum more popular than Eluvetie in the folk metal genre? Legit question by the way?
@@awesomereviews1561 well Wardruna and Faun are folk. Ensiferum is folkmetal but I don't know their music. I really don't know how popular they all are.
After Forever’s legacy will remain til the end of time
Epica, Nightwish, Xandria
My top 3
I wouldn't be surprised if Xandria's popularity will rise significantly the coming years. Their new album is so good!
Therion very constant, discrete numbers but always present in the list. Haggard surprises me, with so few albuns, always at the top.
Haggard can very well be my absolute favorite band of all time. Thou shalt trust the seer album is my indisputable #1. Century's Child might be #2 but first one in unchangable
Therion is still the Best for Me.
The Founder of Symphonic Metal Genre.
Yeah they are pioneers. Also Theater Of Tragedy had a massive impact on Nightwish, Epica and Within Temptation.
What makes Nightwish so special even among all symphonic metal bands is the typical "Nightwish-style". I never discovered any band that was somewhat similar. Maybe one or two songs from some bands but that's it
Cystal gates, but they are fans of Nightwish and Epica, so they have that influence. On their album "Torment & Wonder: The Ways Of The Lonely Ones" is clear.
Tristania with Vibeke were more closer to Doom Metal than Symphonic, i guess.
Far away from a "Nightwish-style".
Really? What comes to my mind immediately is Xandria's Neverworld's End. It sounded so similar to Nightwish that it kinda upset me at first 😂
@@wes1958 World of Glass is a symphonic gothic metal album though.
@@wes1958 World of Glass is a symphonic gothic metal album though.
So good to see Tristania back in name! It was so good when Vibeke was singing in the band. The same as After Forever!!!
Not for me: i'm an old tristania fan and one their biggest fans and i love opera vocals in metal - but i hate that they're so underestinated as musicians and songwriters, especially when compared to morten veland (who wrote wonderful masterpieces but is soing the same, eidiculous, childish 5 euros gothic stuff for teens since 20+ years now). When i was 20 i consumed beyond the veil; then i started to dig ashes and illumination more. Nowadays i only listen to them sometimes but to rubicon and darkest white above all.
And give a chance to mariangela 😉she's one of the best interpreters i've heard in my life!
Epica's «Omega Alive» performance was brilliant, better than movies!)
Kamelot is my number one
Nightwish from the top of the list just looking down: "Fight! Fight! Fight!"
We will soon see EPICA up there! For ever and ever!❤🔥
There is a movie called AFTER FOREVER released in 2022....
Back in the days I really liked the underrated band Lunatica 🤘
I remember that band. I really liked Andrea's vocals. It's sad they haven't really done anything since 2009. The song they put out in pre-production like 5 or so years ago sounded cool. What ever happened to them?
there were a ton of underrated symphonic metal band in the 2000s like lunatica, magica, krypteria, nemesea
Almost the same time there was very nice Polish band Unsun, but they have not existed for long too
Coz their albums are amazing
Curious that Kamelot is Dark Fantasy Metal not Symphonic metal.
But they still make all the Symphonic metal lists.
Al igual que After Forever, es porque son bandas icónicas elementales y con grandes discos que no pueden faltar en la discografía de cualquier conocedor, son indispensables, vigentes, discos hermosos de cabo a rabo.
Starting at 2003. I feel old. I remember going to Within Temptation in 1995 before they got big.
I'm also missing various bands I personally always considered in the same genre, like Lacuna Coil, Theatre of Tragedy and The Gathering.
The gathering certainly needs a mention. But is it only symphonic if you use an orchestra?
The Gathering is not even metal
Kinda on the same page......Wondering why we didn't see any Lacuna Coil (especially early in this timeline) or Amaranthe (which I expected would hit this list maybe lower on it but would be consistently there)
@@caiodbs The Gathering - not metal, agreed. But also, The Gathering, without which a few of these bands here might be fundamentally different. I wouldn't call them metal, but I would call them progenitors of a lot of symphonic metal today.
@@caiodbs Motorhead isn't also metal
I have always thought that the 4 pillars of symphonic metal are Epica, Nightwish, Therion and Haggard. Btw, Epica is my favorite band since I was 13 yo, and I’m now 30
The thing I take from this is "who the heck are Haggard?" I'm off to have a listen now. Every other symphonic band that popped up, and more that didn't, I know so well, but Haggard seems to have escaped me till now...
I love Haggard. The first song I heard from them was The Final Victory - not sure if it's representative, but made me look for them. The song that I like the most is Per Aspera Ad Astra.
seen nigthwish and within temptation in november . nightwish best gig i've ever been to ,within temptation up there as well
Props to Haggard who haven’t released a CD in almost 2 decades but they are still in the top 5.
i really dont understand their high position...
They stand out because of their style. It’s a classical orchestra that added metal elements and not the other way around. No one else did it that way.
@@awesomereviews1561 still they havent released anything in almost 2 decades, you barely see them playing anywhere and the last time i see them their gig was like postponed for 3 hours due to technical difficulties and then they played like 30 mins for a full price show...
And that was not the first time that occured
The main 4, Nightwish, WT, Epica and AF will stay there as the quality is guaranteed
Xandria is there now and might be #1 for years to come.
I love Epica and I hope after all their hard work at concerts this year they get to have the #1 spot for a little bit… But Nightwish Within Temptation and Epica all have to be aware of how fast beyond the black hit #4 in 2019! They are going to be really popular in the coming years!Good lick Jennifer Haben
I can't believe Dimmu Borgir and Apocalyptica were never around
This video should be titled: Most Popular Symphonic Metal Bands After Nightwish 🍷
Nightwish, Sonata Arctica and Raphsody my favorites! 🤟🤟
Although the old Within Temptation could be considered Metal the band did say they consider themselves Symphonic Rock not Symphonic Metal. Even though that may be the case overtime they did move away from Metal. They always did some crossover stuff but these days they are more pop imo.
I am interested in checking out Haggard. I don't think I have ever heard of them, surprisingly with how popular they have been over the years. Twilight Force is the only other band that appeared in the video that I've never listened to, that I know of.
Eppur si muove, the best álbum of the band
Because Twilight Force is Power metal
They are different, compared to NW, WT, Epica. They have excellent rendition of Herr Mannelig.
It’s a mix of ( actual) classical music and symphonic metal. Very good band.
Therion are still the fathers of sym-metal!
Epica 🔥❤️🔥
Rhapsody (of Fire) from Legendary Tales to Symphony of Enchanted Lands Pt 2 is the greatest symphonic metal outside of Nightwish.
I agree 🤟🤟
Epica ❤❤
What a great video. I was sure Rhapsody had more popularity, but I was wrong.
Love all of them❤
Nightwish ranking highly at top, followed by Within Temptation for most of the time, then Epica joining as the third contender... this sums up the history of the genre quite well.
EPICA = The BEST !!! ❤🔥
Epica y Tristania mis favoritas 😍😍😍❤❤❤
Nice work on the stats! 🤘🤘
Kamelot is a prog/power metal band, Sonata is a power metal band, Beyond the Black bearly passes for metal with the later albums after the lineup change(i am not saying they aren't good, just doesn't sound like metal to me). i mean the lines are kinda blurry but still.
Than I would call Within Temptation symphonic rock. Have u listen to Kamelot's brand new album?! It is truly symphonic power metal, Kamelot is soooo freaking good.
How I personally see it with Kamelot:
Roy era: Power
Tommy era: Symphonic
Whichever genre they want to be, their music will always be fantastic!
The different eras of nightwish are really recogniseable. I must admit, they were my favourite band until Tharia left in 2006, so I was part of that drop right there.
Epica my fav of all the times! 🖤
Nightwish fan since 2004
usually all (symphonic) metal bands benefit from Nightwish, because Nightwish has masses of iconic songs which reach much more than others also non-metal fans and can make them curious/open for more/others ...
There is some truth here👍.I have seen a lot of reverences to other bands on the Nightwish reactions.
I got into Nightwish (and metal) through YT reactions then continued with bands recommended on those videos, then further on based on connections of the band members (old bands, features, support bands, side projects ...spouses 😅 ). Nightwish definitely got a lot of my money but also generated purchases for most of those other bands.
Blah blah blah
As a recent symphonic metal fanboy (23 years old), this made me realize how much more niche than it used to be this genre now is :(
It really was something special years back.
Yeah, you would think the genre would have gotten bigger as more people were exposed to it, but recently it's less than a tenth as popular as it was early on.
The niche fact about Symphonic Metal allowed for more creativity because it was out of the radar.

Pra mim, ficou justo.

Fatality? Lmao
I was checking out After Forever, Floor’s band before she joined Nightwish and was seeing it jojo in the top 10 charts but in these last few years parallel to Floors rise to fame it even reached the no1 position about 10 or more years after it ceased to be a band! Like myself I suppose many more reached back to old videos to check out the band and discover their music.
a very nice list !
but, i expected to see Amaranthe, or do they not fit in the Symphonic Metal Band category ?
And Ad Infinitum (but maybe they are not big enough yet)
No. I wouldn't consider them symphonic metal. They're more like power metal.
Me sorprendió que apareciera Twilight Force casi al final, y Rhapsody apareciera muchas veces en los bajos puestos, aún así me hace feliz verlos entre esas bandas
my top three would've been Epica over Nightwish because I'm not a huge fan of Nightwish sadly, Old Kamelot do miss the original singer of Kamelot then fight between Xandria or Delain as my top three choices that are on repeat for me.
Though I have never heard of Haggard before would they be worth checking out?
I'm curious where Delain falls in the list after the announcement of their new singer and new album this year.
Its curious but in my case I started with Nightwish as one of my favorites, but some years pass and in some point I start loving Epica a bit more (at the pont of be one of my favorite bands), I mean, since Design your universe I loved all their albums.
Maybe too is that I have more special memories attached to them, starting with them being invited to a festival in my country in 2008...that was my first time watching a band of metal, live. With The divine conspirancy I tried to listen it again and again, but it made me loose interest in Epica, until 2016 I got curious and start listening their other albums, loving all of them...all that years of cool music and two other shows on my country...I loose all of that for not being interested on The divine conspirancy...since them I try to be patiente with all the bands I listen to, if one album don't catch my atention, it doesn't mean that the next one could not.
On 2018 I could go to a concert and know them in a M&G...they were all nice.
I guess they resonate more with me in more than one way.
As someone say, it's a matter of taste 😁
EPICA will be my number one FOREVER AND EVER!
De que fuentes sacas este video? After Forever primeros en 2023? Si llevan un montón de años fuera de juego.
da gusto que aún sea escuchado y sea muy popular After Forever y Haggard, que aunque esté extinta y la otra aunque activa no tenga un disco nuevo, son dos bandas que no deben ser olvidadas!!!!
Love all off them
This is one my favorite genres ever, and one of the most expensive and difficult to produce in an original way: in fact there's a huge music quality gap between those bands really employing an orchestra (mostly the 5-6 consistently at the top) and the rest, usually resorting on keyboards that emulate the sounds of the top 3, which almost alone defined what this kind of music is
I love how Nightwish is dominating all almost the entire time xD And Within Temptation a couple of times, too.
I was confused about After Forever, though since they broke up long time ago. Probably due to Floor herself popping up alongside After Forever long after it broke up. Just her name is enough💪
It's awesome to see that Nightwish, Within Temptation and Epica ruled in the top 3 the entire timespan 🤘😎🤘
Nightwish Number 1
as someone who has listened to Nightwish for over 15yrs, ive yet to hear anyone with as much talent as Toumas when it comes to lyrics, Floor/Tarja/Annette on vocals (Marko synced well with all of em), or just the sheer energy the band puts off in any concert theyve ever done
NIGHTWISH and Within Temptation the best.
Never heard of Haggard, gotta try it. My lovely Therion deserves more recognition. 😢
Rhapsody of Fire por siempre!!!!
Nightwish, Symphony X, Within Temptation, Kamelot and Epica are my favorite symphonic metal bands!
Umm, I think your stats resource is glitched.
Why didn't it START with Blind Guardian on the radar????
Should be right under Nightwish if that helps where to look.
It's crazy to see just how big Nightwish is/was compared to everyone else. It's hard to beat when someone's gone so popular, they're even playing your music on the radio for the non-metal folks. :P But... is Sonata Arctica really a symphonic metal band? Not speed/power?
Does amaranthe belong in this category ? I know Elize ryd collaborate with many of those bands, but it's a very nice lineup of amazing bands.
Amaranthe sound's more like a EDM Metal than Symphonic Metal

Not to discredit any of these bands and their popularity, but any list that's solely based on internet searches will certainly favor some bands way more than others.
"Haggard", for example, is a single word that may be googled for whatever reason other than actually checking this band out.
Meanwhile, "After forever" just so happens to also be the name of a movie that came out in 2022, thereby spiking interest in the name for completely different reasons.
Luckily, most bands in the genre has very unique names though, so the rest of the list may be fairly accurate.
Nightwish (Floor Jansen) , Within Temptation, Sirenia, Xandria, Epica & Delain. Always & forever.

Epica may not be the most popular symphonic metal band but they're undeniably the best among them. No one can outmatch them. They're keep getting better and better. That is all the matter.
I don't think a band that has recycled the formula for their entire history can be labeled as the best. Repetitive much. Not the most popular. Not the best either.
The days of TPA, TDC or DYU are well behind us. Now, there they proved promising and gifted us their best albums. However, I can just save like two or three songs off Omega. I get bored halfway through. I must have tried like a dozen times to listen to the album, but no way. THP is TQE2, with nothing innovative. Today, while she is still one of the best voices in the genre, she has lost the darkness that made her voice so characteristic.

I wonder how many of Epica's searches are actually searches for Kamelot's album Epica. Like, if you searched for "Kamelot epica" would it count as a hit for both of them?
Oh wow. Bold of you to question Epica's success. Your Kamelot doesn't even belong here in the first place. They're power metal to even start with. They just incorporate symphonic metal in the succeeding releases. Also, just because Epica's band was originally inspired and taken from another band does mean everything they were known for can be easily attributed to the source of the band's name. Moreover, not to mention the massive influx of reaction videos towards Epica which they truly deserve. Also, they're the peak of symphonic metal today who never compromise their musical integrity in exchange for fleeting fame. If they're known today, that's because they truly deserve it and not because of wrongful attribution you accuse them to favor a band who doesn't even belong in this genre in the very first place.
@huh8607 Woah Nelly! That was quite a reaction. I'm not accusing anyone of anything. Just a musing considering Epica is ahead of Kamelot in 2004 when Epica the album was new and charting, and Epica the band was a brand new band who had just released their first album and were relatively unknown. They didn't hit it big until some years later. Epica and Kamelot have been longtime friends and many are fans of both. No need to pit them against each other.

@@babyyoda24 Epica must be this guy's sole purpose to live. Goes around CZcams commenting on any slightly related video just to highlight Epica's grandeur (for him)
I dont think so. Personally, I thought the list was going off of the search of adding "band" to the end of it. Sort of like "Epica band" or "Nightwish band" If they just put the band name that would mean that this whole chart is incorrect as that would mean they would have to adjust Nightwish, Within Temptation, Kamelot, all of them. But yeah, we shouldn't put any band against each other. Just listena and enjoy. Most popular doesnt mean the best or most liked.
Someday, you will see a band called Phoebus the Knight in this kind of vids, mark my word 🤘 (small, for now, band from France I grew fond of, one of the most awesome recent symphonic metal band out there)
What is of real interest to me is the overall drop of interest in the genre itself. Back in 2005 the number of searches in the top few bands numbers in the million, and now in late 2022 Nightwish can only muster around 300K searches, indicating Symphonic Metal isn't gaining a lot of new followers.
I think what is shows is that there are far more bands in the genre now than back then so the fanbase is far more spread out.
Nightwish is too strong..!! 🤘🤘🤘
Well Rhapsody (without of fire) could be underrated because their best albums are from 1997-2004 years (until SOEL 2 included). The "Of fire" era explain to me why they are outsiders, but they shouldn't be due to the first years albums. They were great, amazing. They lost much of their previous aura, partly because of bad choices of career, and a sudden lost of inspiration, their songs became less melodic, bombastic...
