After Rhodesia unilaterally declared its independence from the United Kingdom on 11 November 1965, it continued to use "God Save the Queen" as its National Anthem and also continued to recognize the British Queen as its Head of State, until, when in June 1969 the mostly white electorate voted in favour of a republican form of government in a referendum. The Royal Anthem officially remained in place until the formal declaration of the Republic in March 1970. For over 4 years Rhodesia did not have a National Anthem until the music to the new anthem was announced on 28 August 1974: the Fourth Movement, from Ludwig van Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, commonly called "Ode to Joy", in its original arrangement, not the same arrangement as that introduced as the anthem for the European Union in 1972. With a tune now in place, the Rhodesian government organized a nationwide competition to write matching lyrics, the winner of which would receive a cash prize of Rh$500 (equal to about US$1,000). The winning lyricist was confirmed on 24 September 1974 to be Mary Bloom, a company director, music critic and poet from Gwelo (now Gweru). She wrote the following lyrics:
    Rise, O voices of Rhodesia,
God may we Thy bounty share.
Give us strength to face all danger,
And where challenge is, to dare.
Guide us, Lord, to wise decision,
    Ever of Thy grace aware,
Oh, let our hearts beat bravely always
For this land within Thy care.
    Rise, O voices of Rhodesia,
    Bringing her your proud acclaim,
    Grandly echoing through the mountains,
Rolling o'er the far flung plain.
    Roaring in the mighty rivers,
    Joining in one grand refrain,
    Ascending to the sunlit heavens,
    Telling of her honoured name.
"Rise, O Voices of Rhodesia" remained in official usage for the rest of Rhodesia's history, as well as between June and December 1979, when Rhodesia was reconstituted as Zimbabwe-Rhodesia, a black-ruled version of the same country, which also failed to achieve legitimacy in the eyes of the United Kingdom and the United Nations.
The green and white Rhodesian Flag, flying above in this post, had been adopted on 11 November 1968, when it had replaced the light Royal Air Force blue Ensign with the shield from the coat of arms of Rhodesia in the fly, which had been adopted in April 1964, after the break-up of the Federation of Rhodesia & Nyasaland. The Flag was relinquished on 2 September 1979, when it was replaced with the new Zimbabwe-Rhodesian Flag.

A great little country to grow up in with a great fighting spirit, unfortunately destroyed thanks to the likes of Henry Kissinger. Rhodesians will never die!
