The Return of the CBR 600 Reverse Trike Project!

  • It's been a long time since you guys have seen this reverse trike build but today I'm working on trying to get it ready to paint and finish. I just need to finish a couple of things like install the radiator fan and rear brakes. I did want to originally replace this old CBR 600 engine with something better but I gave up looking for a better engine.

If you do replace the engine should look at any of the engines out of can-am trikes. They all have reverse and you can get 600cc for less then 600$ +shipping. They also have 900cc, 1000cc and 1330cc, plenty to choose from and can be found for "low cost".

Next time you park it for an extended time, drain the carbs! I left fuel in my generator for about a year and the carb was pretty much junk after that. Luckily a new carb is about $13 and in 5 minutes it was running great again. Now, after I use the generator, I run it out of fuel before storing it. No more issues.

@Broken_AK47 Most inline pumps do need to be mounted lower than the tank. They don't pull fuel well, only pump. I found this out the hard way on my last buggy build, burning out 3 pumps until I read it up😂

    • @shaynegadsden
      @shaynegadsden Před 10 měsíci +4

@@Broken_AK47 most electric pumps won't self prime their design means they don't create a lot of suction when dry hence why they are generally mounted below the fuel tank or at least low but here the pump is basically level with the top of the tank so might be fine when full or when used regularly but can't prime itself on low fuel after sitting.

To get a more efficient cooling I would keep more distance from the shroud to the cooler and build a frame around it. For the Temp.-sensor build a connector and put it between the cooling hose, so you don't need to drill a hole into the cooler and get metal particle into the system. Greetings from Germany!

Leave it naked man, gives off a Ariel Atom vibe, I’d drill holes in the tubes and run the cables/hoses through them, make a panel above your knee with a visor to protect the gauges, add some ductwork to guide air into the rad and toss in a panel filter or some pods on the air intake, it might help with the stutter.
Frame paint, yes bright red, and gold accents like the old school 90’s skylines had.

Just a friendly tip, when your going to let an engine that runs on carburetors sit for any length of time there's a proper way. Add some oil additive to the gasoline, my preferred is marvels mystery oil, and then start the engine up. Turn off the fuel line shotoff while the engine is running and let the carbs run dry. They will store way better this way. Hope this helps you have to tear them open less

This is why I think you should paint the frames before you are finished. The time you spend landing off rust is mire time than if you had to re-weld something that was painted. You need to space the radiator shroud away from the radiator some or you are just blocking off that area from air flow.

I vote to change the rear suspension to some kind of 4 link set up. Now that it's standard wishbone suspension in the front, instead of the leaning over design it originally was, it needs something interesting going on with it. Maybe some kind of 4 link that surrounds two car wheels in the centre at the back. So basically like a giant 4 link swing-arm.

for the radiator shroud for the fan, I've seen some with surplus holes covered with a half fixed piece of rubber to act as a sort of passive baffle in the even that the radiator is getting enough airflow that the fan is not producing a low pressure zone. Might be good to implement since the majority of the radiator is blocked off otherwise.

Agreed that carb engines can be very picky. Synthetic fuel works great in anything carbed and stored for a period of time(alkylate fuel I think the kind i use). It has like 4 times the shelf life of pump gas.
For seasonal equipment, i drain the bowl and tank. Run some of that thru it, and store it like normal. I haven't pulled a carb apart since I've started using it. You get it at equipment rental stores and it isn't cheap.

I'd try to make some pipes that fit the airbox openings and go in at least a few inches. Then at the other end they could be equipped with a pair of basic "power filters". The engine needs "resonance" in the intake to work at lower RPMs and especially to have a better throttle response right from the idle.

You might like to add a reverse gear. Using an electric motor for this is a simple option. The Semog cross karts do this very well using a small starter motor engaging with a sprocket mounted on an extension to the transmission output shaft. You can use the neutral indicator sensor wiring to make sure that reverse can only activated when the transmission is in neutral.

  • @Langemann

Paint it red and black. And the CV carburetor on that bike needs some resistance in the air filter box to work as they should, because the slide inside the carburetor is vacuum operated. so when you have almost none resistance, the engine will ned a high RPM to generate enough vacuum to rise the slides. try to put a sponge in the intake holes of the air filter box and se if that helps.

I wish you’d buy a really large all season permanent tent or steel building to store your projects in.
This is the second project we’ve seen you run brake lines and not secure them, just leaving them flapping in the wind.
I think you’re getting bored and/or burnt out. You could probably use a change of venue to really ignite your excitement again bro. I could be wrong I suppose but it just looks that way.
    See you next week

Red and a dark, hammered bronze would look good in my opinion. That, or red and gold.

on an added note the noco boost will and can act like a battery if you disconnect the leads and hold the red button it will provide power without a battery just a helpful tip

I had no idea you built this. It must've been before I subscribed. It's rad though. I can't wait to see what you do with it.

Put flaps on the radiator shroud the fan will suck them closed but at speed the ram air will pass through the flaps for better cooling! I saw it on one of Rob Dahm's but it's probably a little too much effort for this project haha

Paneling is extra expense costing time and materials, but when your out cruising around getting hit by stones, sticks and debris that paneling was probably worth every penny.

My suggestions. Flaps on radiator shroud for more airflow when moving. Throttle body injection if carbs are still a problem. Hybrid (smaller engine plus electric motor) as a backup. If you desire to continue.

The coolant in the oil is probably from the water pump seal. Replace the shaft, bearing and both seals.

With some side panels and some front panels you may get it registered for road use or just track days
