An armour (spelled armor in the US) is a protective covering that is used to prevent damage from being inflicted to an object, individual, or vehicle by weapons or projectiles, usually during combat, or from damage caused by a potentially dangerous environment or action.
The word "armour" began to appear in the Middle Ages as a derivative of Old French. It is dated from 1297 as a "mail, defensive covering worn in combat". The word originates from the Old French armure, itself derived from the Latin armatura meaning "arms and/or equipment", with the root armare meaning "arms or gear".
Armour has been used throughout recorded history. It has been made from a variety of materials, beginning with rudimentary leather protection and evolving through mail and metal plate into today's modern composites.
Significant factors in the development of armour include the economic and technological necessities of its production. For instance, plate armour first appeared in Medieval Europe when water-powered trip hammers made the formation of plates faster and cheaper.
Well-known armour types in European history include the lorica hamata, lorica squamata, and the lorica segmentata of the Roman legions, the mail hauberk of the early medieval age, and the full steel plate harness worn by later medieval and renaissance knights, and breast and back plates worn by heavy cavalry in several European countries until the first year of World War I (1914-15). The samurai warriors of feudal Japan utilised many types of armour for hundreds of years up to the 19th century.

You don't need a barrel. Get a round plastic trash can with a lid, and once you've put the mail shirt and sand in it "weld" the lid on with a heat gun, or just duct tape it copiously. I don't understand the concept of not having access to sand. Worst case scenario, if you can't just go get some from someone, you should be able to get it at a gardening center or even just order sandbox sand online. Hope this helps.

I like the idea of reenacting "inferior" gear, a lot of people just try to collect as many luxurious, decorated and high end items as they can find because they're beautiful and high quality, but not everyone, not even a large proportion of people in the past would have access to things like that, a lot would have mismatched things, old things, damaged things, crudely made things, or just incomplete sets of armor or weapons.
I don't think so, as in the past armour was not just a beautiful collection piece, but a thing, that can protect your life. Also only extremely rich people could afford it, and I again don't think they wouldn't spend enough money to buy a good set of armour. What you have said can be applicable only to those guys who bought only helmets and some sort of not very good protection, like mail, for example, in my opinion
@@professor_incognito that is if they're warriors, though, most people, outside certain cultures weren't. You could be a peasant and still have to serve in an army, you could be forced to form a militia to defend your town, or you could just be stuck without any effective authority to protect you and your property and have to make do with anything you can get your hands on. This was often the reality the common person was faced with.
I agree on everything except about the broken parts. As I saw in many Italian paintings, a lot of foot soldiers had incomplete sets, but of good quality. And big shields such as "targoni" would compensate the lack of protection for the less wealthy, who rather than wearing "broken armor" would just wear padded clothes/arming jackets. However, I don't know about the rest of Europe and Italy was different as armies were not professional for a long time and were composed of townspeople who were used to train with their "corporation" and buy their own gear. But I'm sure that a poor man would choose to use his grandfather's helmet instead of buying a new one. In regards to the late 15th century, most soldiers had a good gear. My personal impression of an Italian mercenary I am working on will have: arming jacket, barbute or open sallet, gauntlets, cuirass and a "rotella" shield. What I deemed simple, functional and realistic, in my opinion.

So you can't have sharp swords in Italy? That sucks
You need a licence i think.
Hence many italian makers make good "butterknife" sharp swords, like Deltin, or marvellous blunts, like Malleus Martialis.
Blank- blade man that must such to have to go though a load of red tape just to be able to do some test cutting, must be a nightmare
Blunt blades can still kill with blunt force trauma. They can do as much if not more damage than a baseball bat.
Nand Ahuja not really as swords are specifically made to be light and agile, many are constructed with spring steel which will spring when hit on something without proper edge alignment, your opponent would be left with just an irritating slap, I guess it could kill but such a thing is not guaranteed, a blunt sword would be more effective when being held at its blunt blade, using the hilt as a mace, which would definitely bludgeon someone to death pretty easily, so restrictive measures on sharp swords seem pretty pointless considering a baseball bat or any other effective blunt impact weapon would be easier for a criminal to use effectively, no edge alignment needed just go to town on your victim, also they haven’t banned sharp kitchen knives in Italy which seems more dangerous to be as they are easily concealed unlike a sword which would give you away as soon as you carried it with bad intentions out in public

quick tip to clean mail. Wear it! Mail is semi self cleaning just wear it around the house and while your running the vacuum. It takes alot of the rust off while. The barrel full of sand is the best and necessary for really rusty mail and you only need a small barrel i get most people dont live in rural areas and have alot of sandy soil and beaches work too

I haven't clicked so fast in my life. Awesome collection man. Sure there's way bigger collections out there but this is super impressive. I just started seriously collecting a year ago so I don't have much right now but I'm hoping to get my collection to this point in the next few years. I've tried blacksmithing and I made an axe but I have very primitive tooling so I cant really make swords yet but hey.... it never hurts to have a dream. Thanks for the video metatron.

Raph, for cleaning mail you could probably get away with using a plastic bin filled with sand and shift it back and forth. The bin you should be able to find anywhere, they sell them all over the place in the US and they're used for storing thing from clothes to Christmas decorations. As for sand, you should be able to order it off of Amazon, or anywhere online, just look for playground sand. If you do try this, I'd probably something on the floor underneath the bin so you don't ruin your floor.

I wonder if you and the other channels like yours, would join together and make a 3 hour documentary on a particular century. Armour, cooking, shelters and castles, the politics, the wars and strategies, the economics of that time. How it develops from the previous century, into the next, and influencing its course.
Might be just a dream. But boy it would be epic and legendary.

230 Hardness is not the single decisive factor in choosing the right material for your armor (or sword for that matter!) It also needs the appropiate toughness. Cast iron for instance has a very good hardness but is terribly brittle - if you were to make armor from that it would have great hardness, but it could simply break upon impact.

Impressive stuff ! I really hope you can answer a question for me ? A while back archeologists found brass chainmail links from the Mary Rose wreck. I had never heard of this before, was brass used only by the navy ? Because of the salt water ? Thanks. I love your videos btw !
Brass was used all over but mostly on ships and it was mostly used by officers or people who just liked the look of it. Normal mail can just be properly oiled and maintained to keep it from rusting so it's not necessary to use brass. So the answer to your question (to the best of my knowledge) is Yes they used it in the navy mostly but No it wasnt the only type of mail that they used. I could be wrong but this is the information that I have. And yes I'm not Metatron but I figured I'd answer your question anyway lol.

Don't think you need a full barrel of sand to be honest. A bucket should do. The mail probably doesn't need to be all unfolded perfectly.
Pour the bucket half full of sand and grit, put in the mail, then pour the rest if the sand in.
Not sure it needs to be rolled either. Just out the bucket on something that shakes vigorously. Like a washing machine running the full centrifugal program.
Maybe spray some 5.56 spray on the mail before dunking it in sand first.
you should have a medieval-inspired battle-ready suit of mandalorian armor made up, just for the hell of it; titanium chainmail underlay, waterjet cut ar500 steel plates, a helmet made as beautiful and functional as possible (synthetic sapphire faceplate would be awesome) and a bunch of old-school integrated gadgets, gizmos and weapons.

Since I just finished my dissertation in copper alloys I thought I'd chime in and say the term is used mainly because it avoids confusion. Because even when talking about copper alloy objects if the same type in the same place and period, composition can vary widely, especially for early to mid bronze age objects (in the case of my dissertation tin content in spearheads varied by around 15% with outliers at up to 40%)

Haha, "who the hell has a barrel?" I imagine that you could find a plastic trash can (with a suitable lid) or some such thing to use. Perhaps also one could oil the mail, put it in a thick sack, and run it in a clothes dryer (with enough padding present) with no heat. Your comment on the change of roman helmets was funny as well. Sometimes we get caught up in simplified time frames and forget that real life change is usually very gradual.

When you say "used it" what exactly do you do? I'm a big fan of your channel but forget or never saw how you test these items. I know you do re-enactments but how intense are these and what do you do? I'd love to see more re-enactment videos if able.

By the way, your barbuta looks fantastic! I'm very interested in learning about when and why knights and soldiers might wear them over other designs, how often they were chosen, etc. Were they used much at all outside of Italy? Maybe you can also comment on their overall aesthetic vs Corinthian helmets. The design is similar, but I feel that the ones that I've seen online never quite capture the grace of the ancient Greek helms. It might be that I haven't seen enough to compare them. Hi metatron, are you interested with the Chinese armor? I mean the Song dynasty armor, 步人甲/bu ren jia (means infantry armor) also you can check on the 铁浮屠/tie fu tu (means the iron Pagoda) too. I guess you probably find them familiar to the armor worn by the Mongols generals in the ghost of tsushima
