How I learned to speak FLUENT Filipino in 6 months

  • This is my story. From knowing nothing about the Philippines to becoming fluent in 3 Filipino languages: Tagalog, Bisaya and Waray waray.
    Learn Tagalog and Bisaya with our online courses here:
    If that link isn't working it means the website is down and we are working on rebooting it. In the meantime you can check out our Learn to speak Bisaya course here: www.udemy.com/course/learn-bi...
    Now for all of you who want to try telling me "It's not Filipino! It's Tagalog!" The answer is.... it's basically the same language. There are only some very VERY minor foreign words added to the vocabulary to make it "Filipino". Tagalog was the lingua franca of people who lived in or near the government capital. During the Aquino presidency in the 1980s, the national language was officially labeled Filipino (which is just Tagalog with influences from foreign languages such as Spanish)

    I’m half Filipino and that is my dad was born in Manila Philippines and spoke only togalog for 20 years. Then he moved to America and met my mother and so on. My dad never taught me the language the 19 years I’ve been on earth. Last month my dad passed away and now I want to dedicate this year to learn my dads native language so I can fly over to the Philippines and finally meet my family and understanding/communicate with them. I hope this website does the trick and if so, salamat!

    Wow, your accent is good! A lot of foreigners claim to be fluent in Tagalog but sometimes their grammar and their accent was often bad.

    • @GeorgeDeCarlo
      @GeorgeDeCarlo Před 3 lety +32

      Their accent and grammar is bad due to little help. Prof. Brown at the Poly-glot-a-lot CZcams channel gives instructions of acquiring not learning language based upon Prof. Krashen's hypotheses. These are what polyglots use. Just to let you know, practice useless, correction useless, and translation useless. It's all about comprehensible input and hours. Silent reading improves grammar in any language. Listening to several hundred hours of comprehensible input has new speakers sounding like native speakers of a language. So before the insults against those such as myself who used tradional failed grammar skills methods, research language success based upon valid studies.

      @OrphanTube210 Před 3 lety +11

      Is proper accent a prerequisite for fluency?

    • @GeorgeDeCarlo
      @GeorgeDeCarlo Před 3 lety +8

      An accent is a nice extra and may even help in understanding many times due to another language accent being too strong. As far as gaining accent of the target language, do not practice in the beginning. Listen. Here is a link where a professor using the direct aka acquisition method found those who did not practice ended up sounding just like or nearly like natuve Thai speakers. Practice in language does not help like in sports. Children never practice their first language. After hearing words they use them as they see fit. They correct themselves. Correction is another waste of time. Correcting someone does nothing as studies in Taiwan showed. People will correct themselves. Correcting does nothing but may add to anxiety. Anxiety in language shuts down the brain in acquiring.

    I’m a Filipino but I’ll speak english for now. For those who wants to learn tagalog, you can just probably learn it maybe less than a year. You can learn it in a short period of time if you are able to learn and practice everyday. Unlike other languages, they have their own lettering or alphabet thingy but here (and probably in other countries too) our alphabet is just the same as english so it would be not that hard to learn Tagalog. I have learned tagalog and english probably since I was a kid. Now I am aiming to learn both Korean and Japanese(It’s because of Kpop and Anime Lol) It’s gonna be a hard task but I’ll do my best I guess.

    Here are some key points about grammar in the Filipino language:
    Word order: In Filipino, the basic word order is subject-verb-object.
    Verbs: In Filipino, verbs are inflected to indicate tense, aspect, and mood.
    Nouns: In Filipino, nouns do not have a grammatical gender and do not change form to indicate number. Plural nouns are formed by adding the suffix -ng or -mga to the singular form.
    Pronouns: Filipino has a rich system of personal pronouns that distinguish between singular and plural, inclusive and exclusive, and formal and familiar forms.
    Adjectives: In Filipino, adjectives usually follow the noun they modify and do not change form to indicate the gender or number of the noun.
    Adverbs: In Filipino, adverbs are typically formed by adding the suffix -lyo to the base form of an adjective.
    Prepositions: In Filipino, prepositions are used to indicate the relationships between nouns, pronouns, and other words in a sentence.
    Conjunctions: In Filipino, conjunctions are used to connect clauses and words in a sentence.
    Interjections: In Filipino, interjections are words or phrases that express strong emotions and are used to interrupt the normal flow of a conversation.

      My advice as a native speaker is that when you're learning Tagalog, it is much applicable to write and speak using the V-S-O or V-O-S word orders as it is most significantly used with all our daily conversations than S-V-O one. Although, I just also want to point out that you can also learn S-V-O since Tagalog is such a flexible language, but keep in mind that this grammar structure will sound a lot more like in passive voice than the two word orders which I suggested. We still speak and write them in some cases, so I still don't want to discourage some of you who doesn't know much about Tagalog. Just prioritize those two for the meantime. There are times when Filipinos don't mind about SVO sentences anyways when they want to say them so don't worry too much when you are using them. Have fun learning ❤❤❤

      You mean having a background in the Spanish language. Spanish loanwords help, the same way as Tagalog uses the Latinate alphabet. Tagalog now uses a lot of English words, and the average speech is not pure Tagalog, but Taglish. Part English part Tagalog.

    Where can I find tv shows in Tagalog with English and Tagalog subs? That's how I learned English (watching tv shows with subs in my own language and then again with subs in English) and I don't want to study normally (I will study the grammar at some point, but I want to actually understand the language before I do that). Does anyone know?

    I am inspired, Dwaine! I was born and raised in the U.S. My parents discouraged, as well as lectured me regularly, not to learn Tagalog (nor Visaya!). I moved to the Philippines to learn... Thanks for sharing your experiences.

    Hi Dwaine, which from those three dialects do you find easier to learn? What is the main difference in each & are there common similarities as in if you speak tagalog can u understand the other dialects?

      That is one of the sad thing when there's a Filipina/filipino who moved and had family in other countries, they aren't teaching their kids to speak tagalog or any dialects (based from what part of the Philippines they came from). Goodluckkk to youuu!!!

      me too, i cannot grasp or remember the words and putting a sentence together is hard, the basics is kinda easy like kamusta ka? but trying anything further gets really hard and tongue tied...lol
      When listening to filipinos chatting is extremely hard as they talk soooo fast, and i might pick up a word here and there, but its really frustrating not being able to grasp the language quicker than most, funny thing is when i am able to grasp Korean and Japanese faster than tagalog sadly..

Uh I'll speak Tagalog from now on, Kaya gusto ko talaga ang mga Filipino songs! Ang galing talaga nila! :) At para sa mga Tagalog ay matututuhan mo ito ng wala pang isang taon! Kaya ito lang ang gusto kong sabihin sa ngayon! :)

    Gonna check out your course within the next year. Hoping. 🤞 Is it good for heritage learners? 😅 It's one of my long-term goals to get some kind of formalized/grammar-based foundation with Tagalog before I start diving into speaking. Reading and comprehension is like 85%, speaking is kindergarten level lol. But damn, I can't afford the $3000+ just to take Filipino classes for a summer here in CA 😂
