It's a really simple way of installing an outside socket without needing an electrician, and wiring the socket this way has the advantage of being able to turn it off or on by using your phone!

Is that safe to do running it off a plug? Is that the same principle as an extension lead I take it?

Yeah it's exactly the same principle as an extension lead and this allows it to be remote controlled. However the downside is that it limits the total power output of the socket to 13amps.
