It is the reason a lot of old guns' barrels get bulged or split.

I was at a friend's gunsmith shop when a guy came in carrying a shotgun with about four inches of the barrel at the muzzle opened up flat and sticking out like a flag in a windstorm. He was asking about getting a poly-choke installed. When Chet asked him how he blew up the shotgun barrel, they guy said, "If you saw a fish in the water and wanted to shoot it, how would you do it?" He then went on to explain that he had stuck the muzzle about four inches into the water and shot, spectacularly rearranging his barrel. I asked what happened to the fish and he said he was so busy counting his fingers he forgot to check on the fish. Jess

It's still crazy that it actually contained all that pressure without exploding, before launching the shell out at the speed of sound. The pressure must be fairly low. If you could get full pressure out of that 700 nitro round, that shotgun probably would've exploded into several pieces.
