    Luke, I figured that you had a deeper knowledge of photography with that small collection of vintage cameras behind you, especially those TLRs. You emphasize that many of the tips are your preference but with the explanations you give for each tip you really are teaching the possible best way to record your kayak journey. Good video, great teaching!!

      Jorge R Gonzalez Photography thanks so much! My dad is a photography buff, so I grew up taking photos with him. It's always been a passion, so I love bringing everything I've learned and keep learning about photography/videography to kayaking. It's an awesome medium to shoot. Thanks for the kind words! Cheers.

    Biggest take away was, "You do not need to film everything". Ohh man is that a mistake I still do way too often. But you hit the nail right on, if one want to film all, there will be less time to actually enjoy the trip. The art is to know the gear well, and have a plan, because once on the water things happens when they happen. No second chances. Still a work in progress for me.

    Awesome advice. Especially with the camera being off centered. I sometimes run multiple angles when I know something goods coming. I also end up with a ton of footage that gets cut way down. I find the fixed camera steaight down the bow of the kayak is a favorite to use but may have to try some of your suggestions especially the off to the side behind you(looks awesome). The settings on the camera are my weakness for sure. Thanks for all the great suggestions!

    So true what you´re saying Luke! Finding that balance between capture as much as possible without losing the moment (Good stuff, will definitely tatoo that on my ass! LOL). I think you mentioned something about downsizing video capture in a previous video and I think that goes hand in hand with how "effective" you are with your capture. Really like these kind of videos, how other youtubers think about filming. Thanks for sharing, thumbs up from Sweden!

    • @KayakHipster
      @KayakHipster  Před 6 lety +1

      Thomas Evers haha, it's a old running joke with my friends. I used to play in a NYC rock band years ago, and my friends used to tease me about my skinny jeans and beard, so the name just stuck when I was looking for something kayaking related.
      For the drysuit, make sure you wear it ahead of time. Check that the neck gasket isn't too tight. And walk into the water with it, make sure you're not too cold in the water before going paddling. Remember it only keeps you dry, you need to layer up appropriately underneath

  • @ckrandomness
    @ckrandomness Před 6 lety

    Notes for me:
    Action Cam: turn it on for time periods I suspect may provide interest, and let it be. Turn it off when interest is gone. This allows more immersion in activity, and less focus on filming.
    Drone: Almost always structured shots. Set up, known or expected content, and attempts to control framing and viewpoint and tracking.
    Try to decide what your day will be in advance, and then don't stress it!: film focus, activity focus, or up in the air.

  • @jlfelber1
    @jlfelber1 Před 6 lety

    You said something briefly about a shoulder mount for a camera. How can I find one that is appropriate for kayaking (resistant to salt water, fits well with a PFD, ...)? Isn't difficult to focus on a subject if the camera moves with a shoulder?

    • @KayakHipster
      @KayakHipster  Před 6 lety

      Joseph Felber absolutely. I will add a link to the shoulder mount and send it your way. The one I've been using for years is great. Sure, if you're paddling hard it'll move the camera. But if I want to shoot for a minute, I'll paddle a little calmer while I shoot, then go back to paddling normally, you know? Or I just stop paddling while I'm shooting.

    • @jlfelber1
      @jlfelber1 Před 6 lety

      OK. Thanks. I look forward to seeing the link. I was also looking for an easy way to store my camera for quick access, in case I see something on little notice that I want to photograph. (My PFD does not have a pocket.) Quick-release from a shoulder mount might be just the thing.

    • @KayakHipster
      @KayakHipster  Před 6 lety

      Joseph Felber here's the affiliate amazon link. It's been awesome, I've been using it for a couple of years now. And it's $30.

    • @jlfelber1
      @jlfelber1 Před 6 lety

      Thank you Kayak Hipster. I have a FujiFilm FinePix camera, so I would need to get an adapter to be able to mount the camera to this shoulder strap mount. From what little I could see in the Amazon description, it seems that the added length ("radius") from the strap (pivot point) would not be so much to noticeably decrease the stability of the camera. (Farther from the strap means, at least in theory, more susceptibility to vibrations.) I wonder how fast I could remove the camera, either at the GoPro mount adapter or at the shoulder strap, if I suddenly saw something like a dolphin and wanted quickly hold the camera in front of me so I could see the subject on the camera display.

    • @KayakHipster
      @KayakHipster  Před 6 lety +1

      Joseph Felber I would check to see if an adapter like this one
      Action Cam Mount ALUMINUM Conversion Adapter for GoPro Mounts (1/4-Inch 20) Adapter for Action Camera - works with ALL devices that have 1/4-20 - Aircraft Grade Aluminum By TACKFORM www.amazon.com/dp/B06XFQFG1V/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_3llAAb2QYFYA0
      Would give you enough clearance. I've used it for a couple of other instances and it's a great adapter that holds cameras tight.
      As far as ease of release, it's awesome. You open the safety, and slide the camera out. That's it. Then slide it back, lock it in place.

      MARTIN W I thought that was a fantastic look back at your trip. One thing you could add would be to film a bit holding the camera while you're on the water. Maybe if you stop for a quick break or just sit for a minute, so you get a sense of you from a different perspective. But it really was great. Well done. Cheers!

      @marsred86 Před 6 lety

      So awesome that you took the time to review my video, thanks! You are right about breaking up the point of view. I have done that in a few videos and it does break up the constant "from the deck" perspective. I don't know how you feel, but it's a trade off in trying to be in the moment, and planning how to document the moment on film. I recently posted on Facebook that I threw a dead fish that I found to a Bald Eagle perched in a tree. He took it five feet from me, too fast for me to turn on the Gopro. I complained on my Facebook post about not getting it on video. A kayaking buddy commented "enjoy the memory, damn the Gopro
      . Right!
