Shane Battier's defense on Kobe Bryant (2009 playoffs)

  • You sure cannot shut down great players like Kobe Bryant. But what you can do, is to slow them down and make them work hard for every shot, every little point. That is what Shane Battier is doing. He doesn't try to block Bryant's shots. He just tries to make him a jumpshooter and put a hand in his face so that he rushes his shot and cannot have a clean look.

    They were considering to add Shane Battier in the 2010 Team USA for FIBA World Championship because of his strong defense, and he would shut down the top perimeter shooters from the International teams...
    He's a veteran already... 31 years old, but has proved a lot, it would be a great addition if they choose him.

    For some people, being able to stop the opposing team's best player from having his way is more rewarding than anything. The defensive specialist is often the unsung hero in basketball, but I think he would prefer to keep it that way.

    @ :37 great defensive technique by Battier.
    If you're facing a great driver/scorer shuffle your feet a couple of times so you can respond fast to either direction they choose to go.
    Guys like Kobe are so good at determining which way to drive split second so shuffling your feet can throw them off a bit and make your next stance less predictable

    @fishamaphone Před 11 lety +1

    Like that first quote said, it's about different looks. Battier doesn't do it on every shot, but if Bryant is expecting Battier to go for the ball and instead he finds a hand in his face, that will throw him off-balance just enough to maybe miss a shot. It's about doing something the shooter isn't anticipating, and something generally considered "too hard" is the last thing a shooter will anticipate.

    Battier is the most underrated player in the NBA right now. You could look at his stats and not see much, or you can look at how he plays - and how his team plays when he is on and off the court - and see what can only be called a statistical anomaly. This is the man who proves that what you see on paper isn't everything. The only reason he's never been an All-Star is because the fans are too busy looking at the box scores.

  • @mehran23
    @mehran23 Před 11 lety

    True, but i think bigger players, especially howard and chandler, more hydbrid centers affect the game defensively much more in the sense that they are always in the back of the of the offensive players. Altered shots for example or players are more relcutant to drive with shot blockers like ibaka, jordan, howard in the paint. But your point is valid, and battier is an amazing defender who deserves the award, they should make it so one guard and one forward receive the award.
