    Shane Battier was one of the greatest college athletes of all time! He was skilled, smart, hardworking, and determined! My favorite athlete ever as I was entering my teens while he was at Duke. The Crazies cheering for him, doing everything on the court, and finally winning the title.

    I loved CBK in the late 90s and early 2000s and spent countless hours watching CBK on TV..Anyway, the 1999 Title game loss fueled the 2001 national title run..The 2001 team went 35-4 overall and was two buzzer beater losses from going 37-2..Anyway, Duke overcame a 22 point deficit to Maryland in the 2001 Final Four Semis..You saw Duke's greatness from the 2001 team in that game..

    That 99 team was really good but the best Duke team is the 92 team with Laettner, G. Hill Hurley, and T. Hill

    • @allanhee
      @allanhee Před 2 lety +5

      Looking back, I just feel like the '99 team was missing something. In '92, Laettner came up huge whenever the team was up against it. In contrast, Trajan Langdon turned the ball over in the final seconds of the '99 championship.

      I felt they lacked leadership. I remember Chris Carrawell and Nate James both saying that alot of players on that team had too many egos and individual agendas. With no real leader to reel in those egos, you're bound to falter.

    That 1999 team had a sick accumulation of talent. Believe it or not, you can have too many toys! I still believe that my Dukies left a few chips on the table, especially 1999.
    UCONN had a great game plan and won, you got to just tip your hat! At times, it takes adversity to motivate you to become the champion you were meant to be

    Nice video. One missing storyline was Boozer's injury from the first Maryland game. It was right before a road game at UNC, whom Duke had lost to at home earlier in the season. Everyone assumed UNC would blow out Duke.
    Coach K slotted in the bouncy Casey Saunders for Boozer and the dynamic Chris Duhon for a struggling Nate James. Duke went super high tempo and won the game decisively. I remember UNC's Brendan Haywood being completely out of breath and needing to check out.
    Duke stayed with the high tempo style for the rest of the year, and Carlos Boozer had to adapt to it when he came back from injury.

    I love Coach K, but that 99 loss still stings so much. I will never understand how best play he could draw up at the end of that game Trajan Langdon, who was great but had a suspect handle for a guard, one on one against arguably the best perimeter defender in the Big East Ricky Moore.

      Somewhat different but...My 12-year-old self had a college hooper star-sighting I'll never forget: In late spring/early summer 1969, eating lunch with the family in a diner in the basement of the NYC's RCA Building (Rock Plaza now)...Ducking through the low doorway of the diner, an insanely tall human being, comically accompanied by a short white man entered to our astonishment. It was none other than Lew Alcindor (aka Kareem) with his agent, some time around his agreeing to sign with the Milwaukee Bucks. I don't think my mouth closed for the next hour, I was so agog and dumbstruck.

    Maryland must have been really good to have stretched that Duke team in so many games. Perhaps they'd have been champions in any other years. Some really great teams are just forgotten because they lost by just an edge to an even greater team. That's no shame. Those are teams that need to be remembered for what they were.

      Those two years (2000-01 and 2001-02) Duke and Maryland were the two best teams in the country. Had Duke not melted down late in the 2002 Sweet 16 against Indiana they probably would've played Maryland for the title (I'm a Kent State guy but I don't think they would've beaten Duke in the South Regional final that year.)

      Maryland had the best backcourt in college basketball at the time and bullies in the frontcourt. Their championship team with Steve Blake, Juan Dixon, Lonny Baxter, Chris Wilcox, Byron Mouton, etc. dominated Kansas in the Final Four, and that was one of Kansas's most dominant teams.
