  • In this episode of Four Decades in Durham, Jon Scheyer, Chris Spatola, JJ Redick, Jay Bilas and Jay Williams join host Dalen Cuff to tell the story of Duke's 2010 NCAA championship team. Led by a Big 3 of Scheyer, Nolan Smith and Kyle Singler, the veteran Blue Devils exceeded expectations as one of Coach K’s last teams not to feature a one-and-done centerpiece.

    Jon was like the best player in Illinois in 2006 & 2007, I was in High School around the same time. My high school had a history of good hoopers (The best in our school's history Julian Wright, only one to make it to the NBA - HF High School, I was a freshman his senior year) but nobody in Chicago not named Derrick Rose around that time wanted smoke with Jon Scheyer.

      I saw Jon Scheyer play at Marshall County Hoopfest in December 2005 against Memphis Ridgeway. He had 36 points in a easy victory against Ridgeway. That moment I knew he’d be my favorite Duke player of all time. And now he’s going to begin a legacy as our new head coach in 2022. I love it!

    Very good, but 2 big criticisms of this video. 1. Needed more on the sudden emergence of Zoubek from being basically a project/practice player, to an impressive collegiate true center. 2. The Baylor game deserved mention. That was an absolute war and is one of the best all-time Duke NCAA tourney games and finishes.

    Coach K is the greatest coach of all time that talks through his nose. He may be the only coach in history to talk through his nose, which would make him the greatest by default to talk through his nose, but that is somewhat beside the point. John Wooden was the greatest overall, but since he didn’t talk through his nose it’s difficult to compare the two. Despite the fact that John Wooden didn’t talk through his nose he was able to win 10 NCAA Championships, seven consecutively, go undefeated 4 times and win 88 games in a row. But as everyone says, it was a lot easier to put up those kinds of numbers back in Wooden’s era. It’s just odd that, despite how much easier it was to do so, Wooden was the only coach able to do it. Go figure.

      @@nowayjose1313 So you're smarter than Coach K? What you prefer doesn't matter. For Duke to remain at this level, the one and done culture HAS to continue there. So Duke gets 1 one and done. Let's go with that. The 5 star recruits all know each other. A lot of them are friends and want to play with each other. The best recruits will go elsewhere. That's unavoidable. Why do you think Coach K changed the culture there? Because he was loosing to one and done teams. To compete at the highest level, he had to. You're wishing for the past. Welcome to the foreseeable future. Stay a while.

    • @nowayjose1313
      @nowayjose1313 Před 2 lety +2

      @@stevefranklin1042 I think you are looking too close to a big picture. Duke has only won games during the one and done era when the team actually plays like a team. The 2015 team was not going to win without Grayson Allen and have a team response to his energy.
      This team would not win any games without players like Roach and AJ contributing.
      You cannot name me many games that Duke won because their one and done players scored 30+ points in that game and outclassed the opposing team.
      Duke is winning the tournament right now because the coach is coaching and the players are responding.
      This is not the NBA, this is college ball. This is the game where St. Peters beat Kentucky and deserved it.

The fact the every top ten player out of highschool go to Duke or Alabama is unfair and ridiculous. Any average coach would be great. Look at Phil Jackson,,, they look at him as one of of the best coaches ever in the NBA. Well is you coached Jordan,,,pippen,,rodman,, Shaq and Kobe of course your gunna win 12 championship.
