- This Unity 2D Tutorial will cover how to use Rule Tiles when building your 2D worlds in Unity for use in our 2D Top-Down Pixel Art style RPG.
▬▬ι═══════ﺤ Tutorial Series Overview -═══════ι▬▬
In this Unity tutorial series we'll be crafting a cosy pixel art 2D top-down RPG reminiscent of games like Stardew Valley, Forager and the Zelda series. We'll explore building out a game world, making a compelling player character and then bringing the game to life with NPCs, Quests, Crafting and much more!
These tutorials are aimed at gameDevs of all skills levels! If you're just starting out I'll bring you up to speed with good practice & cover core concepts to build your skills. If you're already well versed in the craft I'll be providing lots of tips and tricks to speedup workflows and to create modular reusable systems as well as sharing my game design insights along the way.
Each tutorial will be unique and largely self contained, feel free to make suggestions in the comments and I'll try to cover those topics in future videos!

What a great tutorial.
One tip: Create a new class derived from RuleTile. That way, if you ever want to extend your tileset with new features, you don't have to go through the hassle of apply all the rules again. Features could be additive colors, shaders, object spawning, mutating, etc.
That’s insane! I’d not even pondered on that kinda rabbit hole level madness!!! 100% will explore this on & off camera! Your insights know no bounds :o
very cool
Cannot begin to express how much fun I'm having making these tutorials & exploring this content. Can't wait for some more suggestions from you guys & I'd love to chat in discord too! \o/
yeppp!
Dude this tutorial it's awesome! I started with Godot a few months ago and switched to Unity.
Both are great , but im falling in love with Unity's engine . Thanks for the content!
Unity is my home man. Godot has a great experience, but I just love the absolute raw power unity provides & all the muti-platform support & endless power to customize it just makes it a blank slate begging to be turned to into your own personal game forge!
Good Job, Perfect explanation. Simple, easy and fast
thanks for this... ill be waiting for your 3rd episode
My pleasure! I’m deeply enjoying making these. Working on the next ep as we speak :3
you deserve more subscriber bruv. super great!
Thanks man! when I post my next load of vids I think that'll help my channel out a lot - been super busy for like the past 2 months solid lol.
Great job. Looking forward to your next video!
Look behind ya, its already there! ;)
yo this was awesome. nicely done.
Glad you enjoyed it! Excited to build more stuff for your guys! \o/
Another great tutorial! Thank you for the content. Looking forward to more! Also the sound volume was a lot better on this one.
Anytime! ^-^ Ye, I spent a bit more time editing this time to ensure I normalized the volume a bit better. Gonna try to get better with each tutorial.
great too see this tutorial, thanks dude!
Anytime :) glad you enjoyed it
Very useful tutorial, I support you for further content
Thanks! I’m working on more stuff right now but I’ve got some big projects on the go I want to share too :3 not enough hours in the day lol!
I really like the diagram at the beginning of the video. Good job! :)
Thanks! I made that visualization using Shapes & DoTween while arranging it all using Timeline inside of Unity. Very fun process, I wanna get better at making those because I feel it helps to see things abstracted from the implementation to get a deeper understanding sometimes.
Awesome tutorial video! Give this damn guy a follow if ur into game design. Has helped me a ton so far as someone just getting into it
Damn! thats some high praise! Thanks
Thanks!
Anytime! Glad you found it useful :3
Waiting for more
New vid is up! \o/ WuuuuW
Why the vegetation distribution - would there be a way to create a rule tile that lays down green land tiles, then randomly assigns whether it’s covered with a grass tile, flower tile or nothing, as well as maintaining the rules for island edges?
This should be easily achieved by changing the flat green square from sprite to random mode and populating it with the grass sprites and the green sprite representing the empty grass/ground tile.
I personally don’t tend to bake that into the rule tiles as I enjoy having more control over the level design process, but I can see how it could be sometimes beneficial.
I’m eager to see what you’ve been making so feel free to jump on the discord and hit me up anytime.
@@Soundy777 thanks so much! And I meant ‘with’ not ‘why’ in my original comment! 🤦♂️
Discord sounds good, I’ll join now
@@Soundy777 oh, and the tuts are INVALUABLE, thank you. I have a development background but C# and Unity are new to me, so I’m having a lot more fun because of your help
@@noderoad can’t wait to see the magic you make. Check out taroDev, codeMonkey, speedTutor, BlackthornProd, infallibleCode & the dozen others I have listed on my channel page. There is so much great content & im working in more of my own for you & everyone as we speak.
As a beginner this looks over complicated for me, i prefer just to take the tile i need and double rotate in any image editor, boom is upside down 🙃
Thanks !!
No problem! Working on more right now :)
