  • I bought this instrument in the States a couple of months before I went on a trip to Japan and had hoped to get it re-skinned while I was there so I could play it. Little did I know, the grandsons of the man who made this instrument are still running the family business in Osaka. It was a treat for them to get to work on one of their grandfather's instruments and to see that it had been around the world and survived in such good condition.
    Please pardon the rough translations.

Thunderstruck on the Shamisen sounded fantastic especially because the Shamisen is the most powerful weapon. Fun fact, the Kokyu is tuned an Octave above the Shamisen, has the same strings as a Shamisen but it's playing them an Octave higher cause of the shorter scale.

I have inherited a Kokyu complete with a wooden box from my grandfather. He brought it back from Japan after WWII. Do you have any advice on how where I could get more details on its value as I am trying to decide if I should sell it. Seems a shame to have it sitting on a shelf in my closet.

I'd like to take a look at it. After the experience I had in this video, I learned quite a bit. Shoot me a PM and maybe I can help!
