@@justicartiberius8782 if the Ukrainians’ feelings about the invasion isn’t rational, they should change their minds, not for the Russian leadership to change their decisions. A major difference is that during the second world war, the invasion on Russia was a foreign one. The other reason would be that the German leadership exploited the Russian people. This is quite understandable considering that Germany was in a critical state, but of course made the Russians more willing to be free from German occupation. However neither of those explanations apply now. Russians are ethnically the same as Ukrainians. They both make up the East Slavic culture area. The Russian economy is also better than the Ukrainian one, meaning that if Ukraine were a part of Russia, the Russian government would improve Ukraine’s economy.

Most of them didn't "join the army". Every young male in Russia is forced to serve 2 years in the military. Most of these guys look so young that they are probably doing their 2 years of forced service. The 2 or 3 older ones chose to stay on in the military, probably because they had no prospects otherwise. The average salary for Russian citizens is $260 a month.

I came to love the Russian people I served, and know them to be like people you find all over the world - doing their best to live, work, play, and raise good children. I also saw the reality of life under Putin, and how there aren't as many opportunities as there should be for citizens to have a good life. I made a post on social media about supporting Ukraine in this defensive war and all my Russian friends liked it, so I know they don't support the war either. I pray for Ukrainian success in driving off the invaders, and I hope that bloodshed is minimal on both sides so they can get back to a state of peace and prosperity instead of living under the tyranny of Putin.

One young Russian soldier said he didn't even know he was in Ukraine then all of a sudden all hell broke loose and they were under heavy machine gun fire and bombs falling all around and they had no warning it was coming or why this was all happening. They weren't told they were headed to invade Ukraine. I wish all the Russian soldiers would just surrender en masse and stop this insanity. I understand they probably have fears of desertion and what may happen to them or their families if they desert so surrender is a good option to put a stop to this madness before hundred or thousands more lives are lost.

Exactly. They know what happens to POWs captured by their own army. They have had neighbors and family tortured and/or hauled off to Siberia. The old Soviet Union isn't that far removed. They have heard from people who survived it.

How did the US recover from Vietnam?
A couple of years of "never again".
Then a couple of years of "we should be proud of the military, even if the war was basically wrong".
Then a couple of new wars, (Nicaragua vs the Contras and Iran vs Iraq) using mercenaries and foreign soldiers to do the actual fighting but the US was behind both wars...war is ok again, just as long as Americans aren't getting killed.
And then finally a big massacre against a helpless enemy that had no way in the world to fight back (Iraq), no real reason, other than to get the American war machine rolling again.
      No lessons learned.
