Today, even as Takumi in Japan are still assembling VR38DETTs with meticulous hands, the writing is on the wall. The end of the GT-R badge draws near once again.
As it was in 1973, and 1999, The next generation of GT-R is not guaranteed.. Will there be another machine capable of adorning itself with those three small letters? The performance landscape has shifted since those humble beginnings in 2007. Today’s world of electrified hypercars and top dollar supercars begs us to ask once more…

I think the real moral of this story is that the boss at Nissan was humble enough to admit when he was wrong, and bring in talent instead of thinking he knew everything. That will always be the key to success.
That and probably don't assume laws will protect you when you're dealing with geopolitics.

@@chrispy7009 I did edit and shoot for the documentary “Keep Drifting Fun” but most everything has been for CZcams and socials. From my first gig at K&N air filters in 2005, to running Falken Tires video program from 08-2011, to freelancing for companies like Need for Speed, Mercedes and Gran Turismo, and doing GoPro commercials and videos from 2016 to now, it’s always kinda been for CZcams.
Despite the controversy it seemed to hold, I always thought the R35 was a worthy successor. What a car.

This was a dream car for me when I graduated high school. This car also really killed whatever excitement there was for the LFA back when it released. If I remember correctly the LFA was expected to release at the same time but that's when they went back to the drawing board for a carbon chassis. The GT-R came out, and the LFA was forgotten about until later on when it was recognized as being slept on.
The GTR has the heritage. The LFA was awesome sure, but it wasn't the already beloved GTR.

I remember reading the rumors of a new GT-R, seeing pics of the camouflaged version on Nurburgring, and reading all the news after it was announced in 2007. 18-year-old me could still only dream of affording it. I never knew all the little details and the stories of the people behind it and that just makes me want to have a piece of history even more. Thank you for this documentary! All your videos have reignited the enthusiast spark in me

As a 2009 GT-R owner this documentary is very cool! I enjoy all the details and some of the new details I didn’t know. The GT-R is as fast as you see it and sounds amazing. I love my GT-R and when I drive it, well it bring me great joy. Thank you for making this documentary

I can't begin to thank you enough for this. I literally teared up with joy watching this. 1 Month and 13 days ago, after nearly 15 years of grinding away I finally realized my dream of owning my own GT-R in my dream spec. 2009 Gun Metallic. I bought it with 33,500 miles and I've already racked up just over 1000. This video seriously hit the nail on the head of why I am head over heels in love with this car. It absolutely smashes everything I've ever owned or driven in my life (including some very high end exotics on the track in Vegas). Thank you for the time, effort, and dedication you poured into this video. It's perfection.

Everyone ive listened to so far
6 years after, my 2017 R35 is still so reliable and running perfectly fine! My only complain is to had a manual version and that's why I always admired an R34. But other than that it's so well made and spacious for a supercar.
As a huge gtr fan ,this made me soooooo much happy and emotional ,i could feel everything you said it literally gave me goosebumps all the time. Kudos to you and your team,Great work !!!!!

It started with 20mins long videos. Now gone up to around 40 mins long. But one thing doesn't change is the awesomeness of the way the storyline is being told. Still remember the first time I heard the GT-R. A simple looking beast in grey. What a car.. sorry.. a supercar from Nissan.
I started thinking this around the 15 minute mark. I paused and looked to see how far I was into the video....I saw 40 minutes and actually chuckled. His narration and connection of the events through the timeline of a car is mesmerizing.
I have noticed a lot of channels seem to be going longer videos... I guess it is due to the algorithm shifting away from Shorts.

The R35 GT-R is truly the yardstick for supercars. By creating the R35, Nissan inadvertently pushed other companies to respond, although none came close to the performance of the GT-R at a similar price point. Truly a worthy successor to bear the name Godzilla.

The R35 GT-R was one of the first cars that really stuck in my mind - it launched right when I was starting to really understand and love cars. Since it launched, it's gotten more expensive and less impressive, but it was still my first dream car. Thank you for reminding me why.

You missed out on the greatest era. The launch of this car is right around the time a truly special era for car enthusiast ended. There's a saying that the best cars have already been made, this is due to the direction we are headed in the car world.

I have seen one or two tributes to this car over the years, but this one is magnificent! Over the years since I bought it in 2009, I slowly took it for granted without realizing it. Driving it but forgetting why somehow. The kids wanting to race me suddenly making me remember what I’m driving. You never want this to happen as a car fanatic your whole life, but life has a way of wearing you down. Thanks for helping me remember why I did it and why I still do it. These days I stay in the upper rev range every chance I get, and I still look for excuses to drive across multiple states. Mine is 620 crank hp and feels as great at 110,000 miles as the day I bought her! It’s like a tank and has rarely had an unknown issue in all these years. I will never part with it. What a car! I wish everyone who watched this video could feel what I feel anytime they want. It’s an honor.

I'm an Audi fan and owner, but the way you put this documentary, is simply amazing.
Nissan proved that they've still got some fight in them with the newest iteration of the Z. If they can pull it off again there, I see no reason why the GT-R can't continue to evolve and live on.

My god. I love this video. The start is how you talk about boxing fights in Japan, then transitioning to a GT-R, even mentioning David and Goliath as a reference for what this is.
The Buster Douglas story is amazing. He was always a average and unmotivated fighter but his mom passed away before the fight and used that grief to train his A off while Tyson admitted to not training at all . Unfortunately Douglas didn’t have that same motivation after the fight and lost his belt his next match
Yeah, but to the legendary Evander Holyfield! It was painful to watch, but he lost to one of the best of all time.

@PFYT88 Yep, totally agree, he didn't come into the Holyfield fight with the same do-or-die energy that he had when he dismantled Tyson (losing his mother just weeks before), but it also has to be mentioned that if Tyson had been fighting Douglas with his typical ferocity, Douglas most likely would have been just another notch on the belt (even though at the time, Douglas was ranked 3rd in the heavyweight ranks if memory serves, and fought a brilliant strategic bout against Tyson). Would have been really fun to watch Buster with clear mind and purpose possibly becoming a dominant force in heavyweight boxing of the day because he was talented. Definitely an amazing time in the history of professional boxing.
As a kid my dad thought me that nissan makes it better and simpler than anyone else. But after seeing this it gave me goose bumps and I got emotional. Definatly a must watch channel
After a along time I have seen something excellently executed and emotionally poised Documentaries of cars. No doubt there is no match of you and your talented team. What a way to open an automotive documentary - that Tyson/Douglas fight was a shock almost beyond comprehension in the boxing world at the time, I still remember seeing it live at a pub and the place nearly erupting into a riot; the bar staff couldn't work out what was going on. That is the perfect emphasis for the GT-R here - that's some writing. Outstanding.
@Karl with a K 13000 sold in the US according to the interwebz, depends on the area you are in I guess. I don't think they had pov pack versions so poorer areas may need to wait a while

It doesn’t make financial sense to produce a new GTR right now, when new gas vehicles are going to be banned in many places.

I'm all in if the hybrid beats everyone else's ass tbh. I mean the Porsche Spyder is still talked about today and it did that with cutting edge hybrid tech right. But the acura NSX hybrid wasn't the best was it? Sure it had fast laps in some place like the top gear test track but in a vid by best motoring it was beat by the old NSX in touge. Not to mention GTR is already a heavy car and a 4 seater car too. Hy rid tech might make it too heavy since attesa will be there for sure. Goes to show that it's the handling but of that car that makes it so legendary and not just the raw constant torque. I heard recently that Nissan won't release the next GTR unless they can prove it's the fastest car which obviously means its nurburgring time were it has to beat the amg one by Mercedes and idk if that will work out either.
As for the ones now.Maybe it's just me but if the GTR could lose 100Kg from what it is now. It can reach the less than 7min mark for sure especially after reading the Wikipedia page on its unofficial times made that didn't reach the record books all of that with 255mm front and 285mm rear wheel tyres makes it an achievement IMO. But they just doing small changes these days right? Makes me fear the worse that they r getting lazy. What do u think as an owner if this beast car?

I struggle with watching anything on video. I can’t watch for more than 15 minutes and then I need a break.
Apart from the masterpiece which is the lion king, I can only sit, glued, through your videos.
So many emotions from watching I've always been a Datsun/Nissan fan. The 1990 300zx twin turbo was my favorite when I was a kid. Thanks for bringing back those memories with Godzilla.
And that last line gave me goosebumps.
I had one of those. A 1991 twin turbo manual 5 speed with a T-Bar roof. When I bought it, it was on 196,000 miles. Totally stock. Amazing car. 30mph-100mph in 3rd gear, while overtaking 3 or 4 cars in one go, with that lovely v6 sound and the little hiss of the two small turbos. Then shove it into 5th gear and cruise along again.
I thought I had a fuel leak when I drove it 25 miles or so completely flat out. It was single digits miles per gallon in hyperspace mode. Great fun car though. And the dash board cluster reminded me of an old Casio watch

First video i've ever seen from this channel. I was so impressed i had to subscribe. The production & editing was impeccable, the research to support the story very thorough. It was on par with what's being put out by major TV networks having several times its budget. Surely the channel must have a few million subscribers to its name, right? I was surprised, mildly shocked even, that i had to squint & do a double take. It doesn't even have a million subs. In fact, it's well below half a million, sitting at 302K as of this writing. To me, that's so insane it's almost a crime.
I must say that if they keep putting out quality videos like this, that subscription number will steadily go up. It's just inevitable. Thank you for this video & if you'll excuse me, i'll be checking out some of his older ones.
I love this! JDM cars truly have a place in my heart. The way they are created, and the amount of pride those people have that build them.. truly is second to none. I was lucky enough to drive my mates R35 GTR . I've never been in a car that defies the forces of gravity . It's porky but the tricky gearbox and ATESA AWD that silky smooth 3.8 twin turbo just blew me away . What a car ,I just want one

This documentary is so well structured and the excitement behind the unveiling of each storied segment of the development of this modern day GTR was so beautifully articulated. This is by far one of my most favorite car documentaries ever.
Car documentary starting off with an iconic Tyson vs Douglas fight 🔥 already knew this was gonna be straight HEAT

The hype the R35 brought to the other GT-Rs when I was growing up was insane. I didn't really care for or about Nissan's history until I saw the TG test for the R35. Really a master stroke from Nissan.

@Malayna Petersen I used to say i would buy a r35 when i got older, they started at 30K€ used in europe, now that i could affort that easily they're not 30k anymore, same with r32s..

Dude i just opened this video expecting a cool 10-15 min video about GTRs and GT3 races, but no. I got a fucking master piece of a documentary/advertisement. Holy shit. Nissan should hire you, cause watching fucking 40min of that and losing completly my sense of time was an awesome but kind of scary experience. You hold too much power in your hands. GREAT video my friend

I was asked by my father what 2 cars I would drive if I had my choice, and they had to be the cars I stuck with for the rest of my life.
I told him I'd have a 1966 Chevrolet Chevelle SS for the weekends,
and a Nissan R35 GT-R.
I've loved this car since I first heard of it. And to this day, 16 years later, I still long to get one in my driveway.
Squidd, your car documentaries are unparalleled. From your passion and enthusiasm for the vehicles you write about, to the presentation and the information you provide. I get a little depressed after every video I watch because I just want more. But this one was a little more special for me, because you paid tribute to a car that released when I graduated high school, and has been my favorite foreign car since, bar none.

Thanks Ronald! This video was special to me too, it is my one true dream car, if I had a million dollars, I'd still just buy a lowly R35, hell even a 2007. Newer ones are faster, newer ones are nicer, more refined, more reliable.... but the 2007 is the one that shook the world.
@@the.squidd I'd be happy with driving a stock-tuned GT-R R35 as I want to feel what it used to be like originally. Supercars are best left stock.
@@the.squidd Yesss!!! That's why I want the '99 (R34) over the later released track/manufacturer performance models, for the streets! Rather than more circuit-oriented-performance-traits like, say for instance, the ol' Nordschleife over the Grand Prix Section. Oh and like Ron my favorite muscle is mos def the 454 SS Chevelle, I think '70, I think.
@@yongling9825 I would love driving a stock '99 (R34) if they even exist anymore, 'specially in Lightning Yellow or Bayside Blue, even though it's not a Supercar (like the [R35]) you gotta admit it is a Super, I mean Great Car! Though maybe more street-oriented than the circuit-thrasher that is the (R35) Supercar! I love driver's cars like Ferrari 288 GTO's & F40's as well, pretty much anything extremely cool.
@@pLAST3RdISAST3R Nissan and NISMO have a GT-R restoration programme in recent times, from remanufacturing the cars' original parts (small consumables, bumpers and even the RB26 engine block) to restoring a whole Skyline GT-R back to factory-stock condition. So far, I know the R32 is included, but I'm not sure if it has reached the point the R34 is included yet.
The restoration costs a bomb and takes a very long time, but having the car feeling as stock as possible again should be good.
And yes, I'd love to drive a Bayside Blue Skyline GT-R R34.
You have become the new yardstick to car documentaries for car enthusiasts, the attention to detail and the choice of words are phenomenal even if it is just voice over on video editing like 'hunters moon'

@@the.squidd you got it! Just put a new rebuilt engine in it with Nismo Turbos, All new timing, oil pump, water pump, chains, tensioners, and sprockets. Also upgraded oil galley gaskets to the Dodson ones instead of the factory paper ones. Brand new upgraded Transmission for 850HP. It’s pretty much a new car now.

Amazing documentary! This is my first ever car documentary and I was completely blown away! An Awesome car that I always got excited to see on the road but now I have context for just how awesome it really is! Thanks for all the details! Especially about how it was affordable and beat the competition and was inspired by video games and Japanese popular culture! That made it so much sweater for me, that it beat the competition but was affordable and reliable for the everyday buyer but was a super car that pulled no punches! I loved the hit about being able to hold golf clubs and handle blown out tires! Amazing job!
I don't think it can be overstated just how insane its 0-60 times were in 2007. Look at 0-60 times before the GTR and after. It broke a barrier, and the rest of the world played catch-up. And now we have sub3 cars, thanks to the chip on the GTR's shoulder.
it was absurd, i remember i got to sit passenger in one when they first came out, the launch control was unlike anything ive ever experienced.
Absolutely! They found a way to make a car that shifted faster than a PDK, which at the time was the fastest shifting gearbox available. Nissan did phenomenal things with this car

I've never experienced that from any other far car.
And I drive a taycan. 0-60 in under 3..... That acceleration is insane I love it.

Carlos Ghosn is, or was, probably the most capable and imaginative automotive executive in history, and this GT-R a remarkable achievement by any standard. But for all that, Ghosn ended up having to engineer his own escape from Japan, which reflects poorly on everyone except for him and his team. A real lost opportunity for Nissan. Anyway, this was a fantastic video! I really enjoyed it!
I would confidently say that this, this very channel is the benchmark of car documentaries. You deserve more than just a hundred subscribers, mate. Your video presentation and quality is truly outstanding.
