2024 Ford Mustang Dark Horse Review: The Mustang Goes Emo

- It’s time to test drive and review the manual 2024 Ford Mustang Dark Horse! Today, we’re joined by my favorite singer from my favorite band: Craig Mabbitt of @escapethefate. Craig is on tour with @EmoOrchestra, so we just picked him up for a drive before the show.
Ford calls the Dark Horse “the horse you never saw coming,” and most of us didn’t. The launch was a total surprise. The Dark Horse is the first new performance nameplate for a Mustang model since the Bullitt debuted in 2001, and it’s stunning: The car has matte-black accents everywhere, including some thick eyeliner around its headlights.
The Mustang Dark Horse has a 5.0-liter, naturally aspirated Coyote V8 and a six-speed Tremec manual transmission driving the rear wheels. If you want the 10-speed automatic (which this car did not have), it’s an extra $1,600. The base price of the car is $58,185, and there’s only a fastback available right now - no convertible.
The Dark Horse makes 500 horsepower, which might not sound like a ton in an era of superchargers, turbochargers, and electric power, but it still has lightning-fast acceleration. Plus, natural aspiration is a selling feature - not everyone likes forced induction.
Like the speed, the exhaust sound on this Dark Horse has an other-worldly draw. The car makes you feel edgy yet in control, and the suspension lends itself to surprisingly good handling on the highway. (Just don’t look at your fuel gauge or gas mileage. You’ll want the EcoBoost Mustang for that.)
The Mustang already has so many performance nameplates and models - Shelby, Boss, Mach 1, Bullitt, SVT, GT, and more - so it might not make sense why Ford created all-new branding for a new model. But the Dark Horse is meant to appeal to people who wouldn’t normal consider Mustang ownership, like the younger audiences who might gloss over those old-school nameplates when buying a new car.
In this video, we’ll go through the history of Ford’s halo muscle car (from the first day on sale, to the Fox body, to today). We’ll try the car’s no-lift upshifting technology. We’ll compare it to the similarly-powered Mustang GT. We’ll get in the trunk. And we’ll let Craig Mabbitt tell you how he feels about the Dark Horse, which is the first manual car he’s driven since Escape the Fate’s “Something” music video 15 years ago.
Then, we’ll discuss: Is the Dark Horse worth it? It’s not the cheapest V8 Mustang on the market, but it sure is great.

The 2008 BULLITT had the same issue with the large polished aluminum ball shifter. Since it was my daily driver, I kept a pair of leather gloves to mitigate the hot and cold depending on the season. I later installed Hurst short throw shifter and the white acrylic shifter ball did not have the same hot/cold issues.
30 minutes ago, I knew almost nothing about Mustangs. Now I know a little about Mustangs and a lot about the Dark Horse. Thanks for teaching me something new!

One note on the seatbelts, there’s a slot on the seat to feed it through so it’s easier to grab. I’m happy they got rid of the magnetic attached leather strap. You got so close to almost getting it in there@ 12:08 lol

Wow, I think they made the right call busting out a new brand for this one. Definitely a bit more interesting than just saying it's a "GT". I could take or leave the styling changes, but love the new badge and the upgraded manual is a big plus in my book. It's definitely hard these days to make something that is interesting to both a normie and an enthusiast as you said, but I think they hit the mark from the looks of it!

Always a honest review, much appreciated. Lol regarding reaching way back for the seatbelt. The 6th Gen Camaro has the same issue, strange not even height adjustable to get dialed in on vehicles with serious speed capabilities.

isnt the seatbelt thing due to being recaros? i think the base model/premium seats have the loop on the upper side of the seats that snaps down to hold the seatbelt there.
There’s a little hook that we missed! The car didn’t come with the seatbelt through the loop, so we didn’t see it
I have the auto in Grabber Blue same as my Boss 302. Traded in my 2022 Mach 1 6 speed and I'm enjoying the auto it's quick. Did not get the Recaro's have them in the Boss and even though I like them I do enjoy being able to adjust the seats.

The deep indigo interior is only available with the appearance package. That only comes with the beautiful Blue Ember, Vapor Blue, and Shadow Black paint options, every other color comes with the black interior with some blue accents and stitching.
My sticker (and the config) said deep indigo blue
@@AlanisKing Not saying you're wrong. Clearly, this is an oversight from Ford. I'm just saying that you will only see the deep indigo blue interior on appearance package cars, which only come with Blue Ember, Vapor Blue, and Shadow Black paint options. I went on the configurator, and the appearance package only stuck with those three colors.
I can’t remember the last time a modern car was released in only one color, but I only like this in black. Not the biggest American car guy, but I must say these are pretty cool.

I don't know if it's the performance moniker that causes people to skip these vehicles, but the added markups that come with them. Combine that with the value of USD through inflation and increased vehicle pricing *before* dealers start taxing you for nitrogen filled tires, unobtainoum tint and just a straight up "market adjustment" for $15k..and it's easier to understand why you'd settle for a GT over any other model.
I love my '23 Tacoma Off Road.The 2024 costs nearly $12k more for the same model, with the Trailhunter 6ft bed near $70k. After average financing and down-payment, you're spending nearly $82k on a midsize truck in AN America where people are struggling to afford rent and food.
It wouldn't surprise me to see these over $100k for 6 months after launch. For a Mustang.
That's totally fair! I meant the general public - when I was in the Dark Horse, people were always asking what it was. I don't think they'd do the same with a traditional moniker, hence my point about people paying more attention!
@@AlanisKing That's fair! It isn't a car for everyone, but it's an eye-grabber. It also helps that we're getting these in colors other than silver, white and black. Can't wait to see the VERY SPECIAL paint they came up with for the Dark Horse.
I almost bought one, I would still love to buy one.
But a $4,000 "market adjustment" plus all the other dealer nonsense add-ons placed me out of the market.
I wish manufacturers would just sell directly to consumers.

They have them for MSRP here, and GTs for under MSRP

I like the Mustangs, but we get screwed in the UK. For example, that car is about $73k in the US - the same configuration here in the UK is $94k approximately. We also have a lot fewer options in. the configurator - I can basically choose external colour (not the stripes etc like you can in the US) and the optional recaros. That's it. At that price though it's competing with some very serious european competition from Porsche, Jaguar, BMW and Mercedes for example, so it doesn't really make a whole lot of sense unless you REALLY want one. It's a shame because they are really cool. Awesome review as always!
