Military Vet here, bought house in 2011 for 219k, Centennial, CO. Now worth 565k, mortgage per month is 1,485…our daughter is renting down the street for 2,600 a month. Ridiculous how hard it is for twenty somethings to live on their own these days!
It is possible to have a house. My father and my grandfather built their own houses. My grandfather salvaged wood out of a commercial building to get building materials. Even if using new materials and doing your own work completely, the cost would be 1/2 of a new house built by a builder. My father worked a full-time job at Texaco Refinery and build his house after work and on weekends when he was 50. His original house he built in his 20's.
So 10 hours working, 8 hours sleeping, leaves 24-18=6 hours left in one day to achieve all your goals, and raise your kids. Sounds horrible to me. Get a job in which you can go to school at night and study for a degree or trade or anything that may improve your life.

I run a cake baking business at home as a side hustle while I school my children at home. Husband works all day building cabinets, and often overtime on weekends. We meal plan, have very few “extras”, etc…but we have one another and are happy. I refuse to sit around and whine. We are barely getting by, but we are making it thanks to our Lord and Savior. Jehovah Jireh…the Lord will provide.
You and your husband are living the literal ideas that are in my head that I’ve been wanting to execute on for the longest. Working with your hands and making something of real quality for people to value and enjoy. After years of worrying about the possible risks/failures, I’m only now trying to put those ideas into action so I can finally start living a life of fulfillment. And when I do have a family I intend to homeschool them just like you are doing and just as my parents once did for me and my sibling. One of THE best decisions they ever made for us, despite the criticisms of their friends. I really commend you on your tenacity and discipline. I just find it inspiring, as these things have been on my heart for so long. Much respect to you and your family, and I wish you the most success in reaching your goals/American Dream.

Now Im married, grossing 98k per year with spouse, and we are broke. The economy outpaced our raises to the point that we have less than 100 dollars between bi-monthly paychecks. We have dreams, but we know they are hollow. We work hard, but there isnt any hope that anything will change in the next decade. We are 50, and we will die at our desks.... thats just the way it is.
I'm single and just a bit older then you. I'm at $95k, and rent. I'll work until I'm boxed up, but im okay, and okay with it. 60-70% of 50's plus won't ever be able to retire, but again, it's ok. I put my faith in Christ, so I don't worry about a thing. That is where peace n joy lay😊
THIS is the reality. I hate that this podcast spends 30 minutes every week talking about saving money. Between paychecks, me and my husband have less than $100, just like you said. We keep having to refinance our cars and consolidate our debt just for lower payments every month, but it doesn’t help.

It is possible to have a house. My father and my grandfather built their own houses. My grandfather salvaged wood out of a commercial building to get building materials. Even if using new materials and doing your own work completely, the cost would be 1/2 of a new house built by a builder. My father worked a full-time job at Texaco Refinery and build his house after work and on weekends when he was 50. His original house he built in his 20's.

One of THE best decisions they ever made for us, despite the criticisms of their friends. I really commend you on your tenacity and discipline. I completely disagree when they go into the part about the American dream. Tom and Adam both are completely missing the point. They think the definition of the “American dream” should be updated to reflect the current economic and cultural status. What are we? Leftist? Changing the definition of words to accommodate the complete degradation and humiliation the middle class now has to suffer?
The American dream is an ideal. It’s never supposed to change. That’s the entire fucking point. How far we’ve fallen from when the majority of Americans could afford a home and have a lifelong career, enduring stability and increasing the odds of building generational wealth.
We’re living the American nightmare. These guys are just so rich and insulated, they have no clue what it’s really like to wonder how the hell you’re gonna cover your expenses every month. Go work 3 jobs/7days per week and don't live on debt and you'll be able to afford anything you want. Or you could just find a skill/trade that the marketplace needs and that you like, make a great income, budget your money each month, invest and give some of your money each month, and you'll be so wealthy over time it won't even be funny.
