- In this video we had a problem with the Henseleit TDS. On the start of the pass I seen the tail shake and I knew something was wrong. As I slowed the heli down I knew I lost the tail and did what I could to set it down. Luckily the damage was minimal.

Jeff, the difference between your saves, you execute an abundance of skill, I use an abundance of luck😂
Thank you Paul! I appreciate that. It was definitely a nerve racking flight and ending because losing the tail at 165 mph is not a fun feeling.
Great save, I’m happy to see the damage to this insane heli was minimal!
Thank you! It was a heart pounding moment! I’m glad the damage was minimal as well! Parts just got here and time to get it flying again!
Sure wish my crashes were that light. Nice job getting it down with minimal damage!!!
Thank you! I was nervous as heck. I’m glad the damage was minimal and it was not bad. Could have been really bad!
YOU have a great day my friend! Not your fault 1st of all. 2ndly, that was the best controlled emergency landing I've ever seen. You didn't panic, you kept your cool, used your skills, and minimal damage. If that would've been me? I think pieces would still be landing as we speak, lol. Great Save Jeff!
Thank you very much! It was a very nerve-racking Floyd just because the TDS such a rare helicopter in parts are available, but having to order them from Germany takes a while. Plus, the cost of this model I didn’t want to fully crash it so I was doing my best to land it/ crash it with the least amount of damage. The TDS is not like a regular Heli, so the tail does not spin once the motor is off. I knew if I cut power and Auto like I would have any other Heli it would have been over.
@@westhobbiesrc8051 I remember you saying that the head "Locks" on this heli, and I've seen you rock it back and forth when you're about to land it to unlock the head. I was thinking about that when you lost the tail. So to me it would seem even HARDER to land in a situation like this. I'm just so glad you were able to get the few parts you'll need ordered, and you've decided to get of the ball links. I can't wait to see it back in the air soon!
I know you called it a Crash, I say that was a hard landing with minimal damages considering what could have happened.
You most times if it ever gives you the chance, only have a few seconds or a few stick moves to save any aircraft be it fixed wing or rotary.
I am not a Heli guy(but would like to someday)But that first pass that gave the wobble and you said something was off. "myself" I would have been hunting for home at that very second.
I have seen too many Whirly's do something a little off, then either "Grenade" or go Bonkers out of control. (but then that happens to us wing wipers too)
My hats off to you,. a really really skilled, cool and calm save.
Good call on going to ball joints, I have started using them more and more.
Funny how our gut impressions are many times right, right out of the box,. we see something we don't like and end up addressing it later if it doesn't detonate before getting addressed.
Cheers
it could of definitely been worse, I’m glad the same Was minimal! it’s not a cheap heli to fix. so when I knew something was wrong on that pass, that was 167mph pass. so I had to bleed off all that speed and I had a feeling the tail let go and I knew if I kept it moving forward and fast the tail would stay straight behind it and I was thinking and trying to figure out in my head when/how to get it down with minimal damage. this heli is not like most. the tail is not attached to the main rotor all the time. it’s only driven under motor power. so in a regular heli I would of just hit hold right away and Auto it down. (taking all torque off the main Rotor) but once I hit hold the tail would stop completely. I could have probably set it down softer but would have could have should’ve lol in the process now of putting ball links all the way around the tail push rod. wish I did that from the start! lol
Whew that was scary. Your breathing gave away just how intense that was for you. Luckily you didn't just piro out of control and you could actually set it down. That was a great save! I would count this as a win as you found a weak spot, how it fails and didn't destroy your heli, heck even the blades survived, but you did what you needed to, auto it down when it was close to kill off the inertia. Again, great save. I was impressed how nervous you were but how focused you also were to do what you have trained to do all these years to save it. Kudos to you.
It was very scary! Mainly just because of how rare it is helicopter is course you don’t want to completely destroy it! And luckily, the bell crank must’ve hit the push rod at just the right angle to allow the tail to hold some what straight, but once you cut motor power the tail completely stops so I could I could not full auto. I knew that I just needed to control the helicopter to the best of my abilities. Keep calm until it was on the ground.
Jeff, you nursed that down brilliantly , just a shame that happened 😒😒
What a save though!!! Much respect
Thank you! It was definitely a crazy save, but I’m glad the damage was minimal
Some carbon fiber cloth and epoxy on the inside (with a few strategically placed decals) and the canopy will be good as new. 👍
Yes sir! I will lay carbon on the inside and do a different color decal over the outside. A new canopy is already ordered to have as a spare, but we’ll keep this one on there for flying.
Great recovery Jeff! Most people wouldn’t have been able to get it down as good as you did without tail control!!
Thank you Rob! It was very nerve wracking! I’m glad it was only minimal damage.
What a save!
Yes it was!
1st off, another great save, your very good at getting them down under duress.2nd is the good news, these always seem to come in three's and you had the oxy the other day, and your daughters, and now this. so you should be good to go for a while!! (especially what's coming up!!)
Thank you! It was very nerve-racking, but a perfect save in a way. I could have probably let more head speed bleed off before setting it down but I was worried once the tail stopped that was it. Plus 18 degrees of pitch is very sensitive! I hope the bad streak is over!!
It’s a good thing you’re a really good pilot or that could have wound up in bad shape. Nice save. On a side note, I heard your heart stop.
Thank you! I try! It could’ve ended very badly! I think my heart did stop for a few seconds lol
Great save and little damage on one of the best Heli’s ever made .
Thank you! The TDS is nerve wracking! But such a cool Heli!
Nice save agane Jeff !!
Thank you! I appreciate it!
That adrenaline pump and dump.. man your brain must have been all over the place!
Keep breathing brother.
So lucky.. glad you saved it. :)
Those clevis links are ASS!
It was sure pumping! Most adrenaline ever while flying. I’m lucky I was able to save it as well! Yes they are! Ball links coming soon!
i know that scared feeling you get when something is wrong in flight, I got that feeling last year when I was flying my Trex 550e and the throttle stick fell off the transmitter in mid flight.!!!
Could have been sooooo much worse. Good job, brother. My heart hurts for you though. 😞
Yes it could’ve! I appreciate that! Luckily, the damage was minimal
That looks like a slick one . I haven’t flown one I a few years but she’s ready , lol . This might be just what I needed to see .
Do you have a TDS? You should fly again!
what a beautiful place to fly 👍
Yes it is! Great field and wide open!
~whew~ quite the pucker moment!
Very big pucker moment
Great to get a good save like that on video! Great job! Love your videos they’ve helped me a bunch, thank you!
Thank you very much! I greatly appreciate it, I’m glad these videos are helpful and you can learn from them.
Great emergency Auto, a lesser man would have choked! 😎
Looked like you put power to the blades momentarily
for a little field plowing after it was down.🤫
Glad to know I am not the only one to flip a switch when frazzled!! 😵💫lol!
Thank you! I appreciate it. I always show all my flights whether they’re successful or end with a crash. The drivetrain on this thing is so good that the blade spin forever without power.
@@westhobbiesrc8051 Maybe you didn't see it happen, Blades hit the turf at 1:53 stopped at 1:55 and power back on momentarily at 1:56 that is what I was referring too. lol (maybe it is a camera trick with capture speed and disk rotation speed making it appear to be stopped.)
I always appreciate your flight vides you are a great pilot and it is the mishaps that make your channel exciting.
Kind of like a NASCAR race, the race is good but a crash is even more exciting. (as long as no one gets hurt) 😝
Well saved 👏 it's lives on surprised that link popped!
Thank you! To be honest, I never liked that linkage set up from the beginning and now I am going to completely redo it and use ball links, so this doesn’t happen again
@westhobbiesrc8051 good call they must produce so much slop in the tail and yet that thing looks so locked, and a big thanks for all the time and hard work you for on your channel 👍 you have got me back into the hobby after a 15year break!!
Hi Jeff, you did a fine job preventing that heli from greater damage. 👍👍 But what makes me courious is that the tail spins in the beginning and then suddenly stops spinning. How could it stop spinning when the linkage was off? Maybe the tail blades changed their angle accidentally to a position which was good for stopping the spinning. Could that be the reason? Whish you the best for repairing that piece of jewelry. 👍
Thank you! It was heart pounding and I’m glad the damage was minimal! So all I can think of is as it was spinning the linkage hit the bell crank holding the tail blades at the right angle for that short time. Thank you! Parts are on the way and it will be rebuilt very soon!
auto,s are fine when you are ready and practising them....when the tail flips out and its far away from you like yours was its a different story....you did very well to save it.
Always a fun time when Mr. Adrenaline Dump shows up. The spindly landing gear definitely didn't help. You saved yourself a major repair bill though, so hopefully the pride will help soothe the pain.
Yes, it is! Anytime you fly, you risk the crash. But it always sucks no matter what! Thankfully, the damage was very minimum. The skids are not made for rough landing lol you must set this helicopter down perfectly every time or it will fall over.
Great auto rotation and landing
Thank you! Could have definitely been better but I, glad it was not worse.
Nice save.
Thank you!
Jeff, well these things happen, but you remained calm, and controlled the landing as best as you could given the circumstances, it could have been a lot worse, but thankfully, it was minor damage, keep em comming my friend, all the best to you.
Thank you! I appreciate that. I tried to stay as calm as possible, and just fly it down the best that I could. But it could’ve been a whole lot worse, but I am glad at the damage as it is very minimal.
my goodness you got lucky. but the skill it took to keep it in one piece. amazing
Thank you Bob! I took everything I had to keep it as flat as possible
you are an amazing pilot Jeff
Thank you! I greatly appreciate that!
good save man!!
Wow, I consider this as a save! Your skills are top notch
Thank you! It took every skill I had to crash/land it as I did. It was not easy to think that fast and try and not destroy it!
@@westhobbiesrc8051 absolutely not easy, hence my admiration 😄 DId you find the reason for the failure?
@@lev_on_heli I appreciate it! So the link pop. Which I still don’t know know why because the tail was straight and not like I was full one way or the other. But I never liked that setup. So now going with ball links!
@@westhobbiesrc8051 Hm, maybe that was some kind of pesky resonance, so the pushrod started shaking and popped off? anyway, good luck with the new setup :)
Great job getting that down...I probably would have turned it back into a kit! 😂
Thank you! I was trying my best to not turn it back into a kit.
Damn man, that's a real bummer. At least you set it down pretty easy.
It was nerve wracking but could have been a whole lot worse! I’m glad the damage was minimal!
So sorry bro, good attitude for for what just happened. Keep on keeping on. Peace
Thank you! I appreciate it. It will be rebuilt and flying again very soon!
Wow!! Amazing save how did u keep the tail from spinning? I guess the rod jammed and held just enough pitch to keep the tail somewhat from completely loosing it? I had an elevator rod come off an airplane luckily the rod would hit the control horn and give me tiny bit of up elevator but had no down i git lucky that rod just barley pushed on control horn enough to keep it level lol im thinking something simular in your situation? Amazing save!!!!
" Keep flying the helicopter until you can't " Well done sir! Very impressive how you kept your s$*t when things got spicy.
Thank you! Yes, you fly that thing all the way till it hits the ground. That is the biggest thing that I tried to tell everyone no matter what if it’s still in the air you still try to fly because you can always save it at any time.
Man my heart stopped when you said that you lost tail!😱
My heart stopped about a minute before as soon as I seen it shake which this helicopter never does I knew something was wrong, and when I tried to correct at the top of the split S, I had no tail control
I suspect that link popped off just from the simple speed of the machine and the torque on that tail being applied at that ridiculous speed. You might need to look into more heavy duty linkages.
I never liked the tail set up from the beginning! I’m not a big fan of those Clevis is so now it will get ball links all the way around!
Man you one lucky dude. Nice save Jeff
Thank you! I’m not sure if it was luck or skill but one of them saved me lol
Oh man I'm glad everything survived. Scarry brother.
I am too! It could’ve been a whole lot worse.
Jeff, sorry 😢 to hear this.
Thank you! It will be back flying soon!
I know the nerves you feel, my goblin 630 Competition tri blade has not been made for some time now. I can still get some parts for it but they are getting harder to find.
Damn man! Sorry to see this, luckily nothing too serious happend, would you even be able to get a new canopy for that thing if it was destroyed? Looks like it held up pretty well overall at least
Thank you! Yes, you can still order all the parts for this model. They won’t be around for a long time, but they are still available as of now a bunch of parts have been ordered to have in stock.
Dang bro . She motors nicely !
I am sorry 😣. Everything works out though . It always does
Awesome save tho
Thank you! I appreciate that
oh no that sucks. but you saved it so good respect. i would freaked out xD
Thank you! You have to fly it all the way to the ground! It definitely gets your heart pumping.
This thing scares the heck out of me...
Me too! Lol
Dam bro, well at least you saved it. That will get your heart pounding tho.
Yes it will! Thank you! I appreciate that!
Atleast it wasn't the turbine helicopter 😅... okay jokes aside if anything shows your skill thenn that this thing is almost intact 💯 no clue how you managed that... mad respect
Nooooooo
My thoughts exactly
Having mechanical failures during flight is so much worse than dumb thumbing it. It sucks to crash in general but when it's out of your control your heart sinks. I had it happen two days in a row with two different helicopters. Esc failed once, and the servo failed the next day
I have had many tail servo failures. Some landings did no damage or very little. Never had main servo fail.
Oh yeah I also hate mechanical failures. At least when you dumb thumb it it's 100% your fault. A failure may also be an oversight on a build, and you also learn from those but it really sucks to crash when it's not entirely your fault.
@@zmanphx same. Never cyclic, always tail
@@toadiscoil if you can learn something it's definitely better than just dumb luck.
I much rather crash from pilot error than mechanical failures. I try my best to think of anything, and everything that could fail so it doesn’t happen. Unfortunately, it still happens no matter what. Sorry about your crashes!
So why did the Henny kick while you were walking up to it. It appears you shut down motor a few above the ground. It sounded like a motor was running when you picked it up. If the motor was running, it must have been hard to secure the head and pop the canopy off to disconnect the battery. I struggled with that in the past on glow motors.
Motor was shut completely down 10 seconds before impact. The head moved from the Servos, moving, while I was circling the sticks to see what I had control of.
Bro please be careful I just cut 2 fingers really bad I’m a newbie I’m not gonna fly anymore till I get some flying lessons and time on a simulator don’t sweet crashing the helicopter can be fixed 🤙
Holy crap! Be careful. Yes I definitely say use the simulator for sure. But also exercise caution when handling it. If you cut your fingers I assume it was a bench accident or it spooled up on you while carrying it to fly. Just make sure you double and triple check everything and try to configure safety features. I always use two switches for throttle hold and motor off, for example as I have bumped accidentally one when carrying the heli to the flight line.
Helicopters can be very dangerous! I would highly recommend simulator time and practice before getting into them. Was that your first helicopter? Was it a bench accident or on a flying day?
I flew the little Goosky S1 this was the S2 it seemed weird on set up but definitely no now to do more homework and research 🤙
Hensleit = pucker factor large
Higeeee pucker factor!
Wow great save!
Are you still running Vbar or Brain?
Vbar on that Heli.
Thank you! This Heli is on a Vbar EVO.
@@westhobbiesrc8051 what are your suggestions to maintain as best control as possible, basically like you did, when you lose the tail?
@@LichaelMewis first thing I would do if practice piro flying, get to where you can just hold left and right piro and flight the heli where you want it. That’s the most important thing as the heli will be spinning out of control. Also hitting hold on a normal heli (not the TDS) will take the torque off the heli right away and it will stop spinning and give you better control and you auto down. So also learning hovering in all directions so you can control it with no tail.
@@westhobbiesrc8051 sounds like I need to learn how to piro fly. That's where they fly around with the tail spinning right? Then I will practice the auto rotations next. Speaking of, is a RS4 Venom or 470L good enough to learn auto rotations on?
😢😢😢
Jace the ace even wrecks , right ?
Yes he does!
I'd advise you to breath next time / if ever again- if this were a pker game, you sure showed your hand...prior to the final explanation, your reaction approaching the heli spelled out either you cant afford the crash, it's expensive if damaged, or the rarety of the heli if it were to have been damaged... Just breathe...
Money is not the problem it’s a very rare Heli that is very expensive and no one wants to crash a Heli that there is only 65 of.
Like a BMW
Much better then a BMW 🤣
Good day pfff 🥹 Luckily it's not too bad, and you managed to get it to the ground quite tamely.., Great that you're also putting this online ❗️ good for you Jeff, that's what I call character 💪🏽.. it wasn't fun to see, but shit happens, Keep Your Head Upp
Thank you! No matter what success or crash I will always post videos. I am one that believes in full transparency especially because a lot of you guys look up to me and I don’t want you to think that I have only great flights every time. Yes, 98% of my flights are perfect but there is always that few times things go wrong no matter what you do.
@@westhobbiesrc8051 This was not your fault. That tail link is actually not suitable for this application. At that speed everything starts to vibrate and then force comes from all sides. That worked exactly against each other and caused the link to shift. and became loose... Good warning and luckily little damage!!! Well saved Jeff
