ARE SWIMMING VO2 INTERVALS WORTH IT? Understand the Physiology vs Technique Tradeoff

  • Can you or should you do VO2 intervals in the pool. We know the principles that work for cycling, running and rowing. Aim to spend time at and near VO2max, 1:1 work to rest ratio is really effective and we can repeat that intensity quite easily. But can this transfer over to swimming?

Good video Nick. In terms of what works for me personally I’ve found doing high end aerobic work ie 2 x 10 x 100 at critical swim speed a better stimulus than vo2. I also find other work like 5 x 200 pull and paddles at race pace and some fast 50s on 60 better than the vo2 protocols we use on the bike and run for the very reasons you’ve stated in the video.

Can you make a video on breathing while swimming? I'm new to triathlons and I find it much harder to find an efficient breathing pattern when swimming compared to running or cycling.

Are you talking about technique with breathing or things how to stay relaxed/breathing mechanics etc?
If you’re looking for swimming technique advice/tips I highly recommend looking up “effortless swimming”. Unreal knowledge base for technical advice on swimming.
I’ll definitely put up my thoughts though on breathing considerations for swimming given the obvious challenges compared to cycling/running.
