I was hoping that this subject would be addressed in swimming. As a runner I was tested with high VO2 results as a 55 year old. Then cancer hit me! Runnng was over! Now at 67, I am trying to rebuild my cardio by learning to swim correctly and build endurance. I am using an hrm just as I did in running. I can correlate heart rate in running with HR in the pool. I used to say that I want to see how fast I can run easy. That gave me a good idea of what my VO2 was. How fast I can swim 1500 easy will give me a good idea of what I could swim, say, a 200 free at speed. I have seen some improvement in 6 months. I am finding that building cardio in swimming is a slow process; especially in the beginning.

It is definitely slow at the beginning, but as a swimmer who didnt swim for 6 months after districts, stat consistent and learn proper technique and your cardio will go up like crazy. Swimming is one of, if not, the best form of cardio because of how many muscles it works. Good luck with your journey and happy swimming!

Your 100% VO2max pace will be the best distance you can swim for 5-7 minutes. If you can swim 400 in 6 min then 100 at 1:30 pace will be at your 100% VO2 speed. To improve this push the pace down (1:28) and add rest (+17 for 1:45) to create VO2max intervals. 12-24 minutes of intervals at your VO2max pace will improve the system. If you can do more than 24 minutes lower the pace or rest next session.

I do make hypoxic/less oxygen training part of my every day work outs. One coach had me doing lengths of the pool, short course, breath every other stroke, then every 3rd stroke, 4th, till I was doing the length with one breath. I did like this one, but generally do just lengths rather than climb that ladder.... Do note here, work your way up. There have been drowning deaths from black outs when swimming long lengths with no breaths.
I would add that I like some lengths as all out sprints, and some as slow and efficient lengths. To get max distance on one breath, you can't sprint. Both are good for increasing oxygen efficiency.

@@avasmth it took me around 2 months to perfect my breathing pattern in Freestyle! You should have horizontal position all the time in Freestyle, and don't look backside or at Sky! To make the breathing pattern more perfect, just take your head one eye out, while the second one should be taken half eye out, not whole, and only look at your straight left side, and take breath within two seconds exhaling outside and inhaling inside! Try to follow this pattern for few weeks and you'll master for sure in breathing!

Being relaxed and conditioned helps. To be good at swimming you have to have consistent access to a pool and get your ass in the water. You need more time than you realize to practice being relaxed .
Swimming should be 80% relaxed and 20% max out.
If you’re tired, get out the water and use the rest room. Get some water. Have some tea. You need to be comfortable and revolve your day around lining your habits up in a manner that propel you to be ready to relax in the water.
It takes me an hour to fully relax in the water,,
