    The modern incarnation of Paddy's day is an Irish American invention which had good intentions initially. The Irish were treated poorly when they first arrived in North America and so by coming together and putting together a spectacle it helped assert their identity and pride of place in their new home. Traditionally in Ireland it was acknowledged and there were small gatherings (religiously without drink) and after years of it growing in popularity in the States, even being celebrated by people who had no connection to Irish heritage, it then got served back to the Irish in this new, over the top, commercialised, fun but tacky form. The Americans did the same thing with Halloween, a traditional Scots Irish end of harvest celebration, now it's a worldwide phenomenon.

    • @ccahill2322
      @ccahill2322 Před 3 měsíci

      @user-gp5in5ss1n, Trying to write in you "name" is too much of a task in itself. However, I thought I should point out the fact of why "St. Patricks" (like all the other American bullshit, for commercial reasons only) has been allowed in the first place. It was because of all the Irish blood spilt fighting for "Lincoln" and not a few fighting for the Confederates. I was only after that blood and murder for "freedom" that the Irish were recognized as "white" people. Believing in the American "dream" is like putting your hand in a bag of snakes hoping to pull out an eel. Have a nice day, as they say.

I enjoy the parades and all the excitement of St Patrick's Day, especially in a smaller town or village. This man is hilarious and he's entitled to his opinion. It's a pity that not enough people regard it as a religious holiday and all the drunkenness and vandalism that goes with it in some places. Still it's one of the most fun days of the year in Ireland

    • @JacknVictor
      @JacknVictor Před 3 měsíci

      It's not even about St. Patrick anymore, he barely gets a mention, and being in America during st Patrick's day once about 8 years ago, during a conversation with a bunch of Americans mostly plastics paddies or claiming to be at least, I discovered most of them didn't know who St Patrick was, or what he did, where he came from, no history knowledge of the man, the other half thought he was just a holiday mascot like Santa (again, they didn't realise he was a real saint either) or the Easter bunny.
      They were too busy ordering a badly drawn shamrock topped Guinness with green dye spouting bollocks whilst wearing a Chinese made green buckled hat with fake ginger pubes poking out from under the brim and face covered in paint in an attempt at what I think was supposed to be an Irish flag but looked more like a mash up of an Indian flag and a Pakistan flag spread over their faces, And we're self indulgently busy to actually care about what they were celebrating, saying absolutely feck all of importance whilst doing an offensive "fiddle-de-dee, bring back me lucky charms, po-tay-tooo!!!" accent (think of how bad dick van dykes cockney accent was - it was along those lines offensive) and some were SERIOUSLY stating to ACTUAL IRISH PEOPLE (they even asked a couple of the real Irish people what part of England they were from, also stating that normally they hate the English but as it was St. Patricks day, they would be nice to these [Irish] "English bastards" today) and stating to these (real) Irish people that They themselves were IRISH. Not only were they IRISH, these Americans who had no clue what they were celebrating, didn't know the difference between an actual Irish or English accent, but they were insisting on letting everyone know how Irish they were. More Irish than the irish' was one laughable quote.
      One of the real Irish ladies in our group was being pestered, and was asked where she was from, she said Ireland, the plastic paddy asks where, what part? she, not wanting to tell this insufferable arse anything, ends up sarcastically saying she was from "Craggy island" and her dad owns a Guinness factory he says, "Wow! Really? My grandad was from there,saying how he came to America in the 1950s when the potato war was going on. It's a small world huh? Do u want to spend some time with me?" To which she told him, she had to catch a flight home in the morning, but if he booked a flight to Ireland sometime she would love to see him and that he could come stay in her family home, and her dad Ted and uncle Jack and cousin dougal would love to have him there , and would even teach him how to make Guinness. And he genuinely believed her.
      The sad thing being this isn't a small minority of Americans that do things and claim things like this and are so full of self importance will openly state that they are more Irish than a born and bred Irish by birth citizen. I don't understand the mentality of people like that. This fella in this video is spot on.

    It used lt be a quiet religious day where the pubs closed, until the Americans got a hold of it and it got repackaged to the Irish public.

    One thing that annoys me about St Patrick's day is how Dublin is painted as the central point of Irish culture. The city was formed by Vikings and was an English stronghold for years. St Patrick actually spent most of his time in the northern province of Ulster, particularly counties Antrim and Down. The irony is that many there don't celebrate it as they are Protestant unionists.

    St Patrick's day was an advertising campaign for Guinness. They were upset that their profits went down every year when the Irish Catholics gave up Alcohol for Lent! Hence St Patrick's day was invented so that people had an excuse for drinking before Easter.

    I lived in Dublin in the 2010s and was a bit surprised to see that it seemed like most spectators of the parade were , just like me, foreigners. I was also surprised to see that the parade was so multicultural and that they had more dinosaurs than Paddy himself. I never saw another parade and instead celebrated with friends in other parts of the country. I believe that the US and Australia celebrate paddy's day more than what the Irish in Ireland do.
