      Oh Mel... this kind of comment is exactly why I want to make videos, to encourage people. YOU CAN DO IT! I know you can. I used to teach these kinds of classes in person (prior to the pandemic shutdown) too mostly adult women. What I saw was how people got stuck in their perfectionism, their need to create "pinterest" worthy projects. So much is expected of us that we forget to just play. I understand this because internally I am that perfectionist too. I have had that "if I can't do it well I can't do it" attitude... until I found journal making. The beauty of Junk Journals is that we can make something just for us, that is perfectly imperfect using what we have. I hope that you can continue your journey and allow yourself to make things that fill your heart, are full of pretty papers and things you pick up along the way and that you grow in your confidence. I believe in you!

      Amy, thank you so much for watching and commenting. Everybody will have their own way of doing some thing and we all have our preferences if I was making a journal that I knew had to withstand a lot of use I might consider doubling the cardboard. However, I have yet to have a problem with you using a box as is I like that it’s flexible and it’s plenty sturdy for an art journal or a basic junk journal. I hope you have fun creating your own.

      Hi Sarah, I have 5 videos in this series showing different types of journals from different types of boxes. One is a Mac N Cheese box journal, one is a cracker box journal and one is a spaghetti box… the playlist you can find the series in is called Journal Making Series & Ideas or search Mac N' Cheese Journal.

    What would you do with the spine if you only had a single signature, but still wanted the support of the cardboard cover?

    • @MichelleRaeLandry
      @MichelleRaeLandry  Před 4 měsíci

      Hi Carla… if I had o it a single signature this would be my choices.
      1. Take a cardboard box ( like a Mac n cheese box for instance) and cut the spine side down the middle and then glue one half on top of the other. That will cut the spine size in half AND make the spine stronger.
      2. I’d use the front cover as is, score the spine to the thickness I want and then fold it so the old crease is on the back cubed. ( you will be covering it so it doesn’t matter much) and then trim the back cover to be even with the front.
      3. Find a box with a super thin width…so the spine is very thin…look around the grocery slide. Maybe dryer sheets, ready cooked bacon, sometimes packaging inside boxes have off sizes. I hope these choices made sense.

    I found a lot of stuff around my house that I can use to make my journal, accept for the eyelets for the spine that I see other people use and that eyelet pliers. CAn I use yarn to hold the pages to the spine? Or is there a certain type of string to use for the pages and the spine?

    • @MichelleRaeLandry
      @MichelleRaeLandry  Před 8 měsíci +1

      Hi Misty, sorry for the delay in commenting back. I always encourage using things you already have. You can really use anything for the binding, however anything that will stretch out over time will make for a loose binding, so I guess it depends how stretchy the yarn is. I don't know much about yarn - but I'm sure there are some that are stronger and stiffer than others. I like using elastic, that will give when I need to put in signatures but spring back to shape once the pages are in. I also like bakers twine. Really though it is your preference. As far as eyelets, I find that Hobby lobby has the Paper Studio brand on sale once a month, so you can find them pretty inexpensively. I have also found inexpensive eyelets and basic setters in the sewing section of many craft stores as well. Good luck and happy crafting!

    How do you alter the Box if you're only making a single signature, but it's too thick just to use cardstock cover.. what do you do with a second seam of the spine of a box since they all would be too wide if I only need a quarter or half inch spine? Would I need to cut the spine out of the box, cut to size and somehow tape it back into the front and back pieces?

    • @MichelleRaeLandry
      @MichelleRaeLandry  Před 4 měsíci

      You are not alone in asking this. I think there are a few ways to approach it… but I would cut the spine side directly in half and then stack them on top of each other and glue them with a good glue. This would make a strong spine and you wouldn’t lose the hinge of the front and back cover.

    Why not Use the piece you cut off as the measure to cut the other piece

    • @MichelleRaeLandry
      @MichelleRaeLandry  Před 9 měsíci

      Hi Peggy, I usually do use pieces I cut off to measure, but who knows why I didn't this time. When I'm filming it's hard to think about my words, my placement of items etc. and I'll admit I make some silly mistakes. If you continue to watch me I'm sure you'll shake your head more than a few times. LOL. Thanks for watching.
