Salah has freakish numbers of goals for the position he plays, but he plays that position in an odd way. He doesn't , or in the past hasn't linked the play or caused Liverpool to play incisive football. Give it to Salah and he will lose the ball 4 out of 5 times. The other time he'll score or assist. In spite of his amazing records, this takes away from how he is viewed. But when you take into account his work off the ball and his availability, he has to go down as one of the greats. On the ball, I just don't particularly like watching him play.

Salah is seriously underrated. I have to admit I was guilty of that myself until a couple of years ago. Obviously he may not reach Rush's goal total but his scoring rate of goals per game is better. His contribution of goals and assists is amazing. He is seriously in the conversation for our best ever player and a very good case for being the best.
For me Gerrard, Dalglish and Salah are the top 3 and I would not argue much for who should take the top spot.

So glad you done this podcast. Sad fact is his religion and where he comes from, has a lot to do with it. I'm from the same background, and I've supported Liverpool since 1982. For me to see Mo play for us is massive. I knew he weren't going nowhere, cos to him,his word means more than any money put in front of him. I hope he signs a contract and stays another 4 to 5 seasons. At the end of that, I think he would be only behind Rushie in the all time list. Also, not belittling Sir Roger Hunt for 1 second, but some of his goals were scored in the 2nd division for us. Mo is in every conversation when talking about all time LFC legends

    • @ComradeOgilvy1984
      @ComradeOgilvy1984 Před 8 měsíci +1

Agreed. Too many ignorant voices compare him directly to prime Messi, prime Ronaldo, or Haaland last season, and declare him overrated.
A 15 goal 5 assist forward or 5 goal 10 assist midfielder is the kind of player any top club would happily build a team around. In a "bad" year, Salah is much better than that, and in his "worst" years in the last 8 seasons, Liverpool bagged the PL trophy.
I understand there is some uncertainty due to age and the possibility of a monster purchase, but in terms of football his game is evolving. Over the last 4 seasons, he cuts in more and more to look for the cross. Also, with Szoboszlai at RM, he has a VERY fast partner to make overlapping runs while he cuts in. Considering that Salah is always drawing 2-3 defenders when he is near the box, that means that players like Dominic are going to be single covered.
Salah is looking like he could be a top 10 player in the PL in offensive contributions for a few more years -- he may age gracefully like Messi even if his peak was not at Lionel's level.

Gents, I truly enjoyed this chat. I thought I was about to listen to some pros and cons debate, but I'm glad I was wrong. Your honest assessment of my countryman time at Anfield proves that football can still be worthwhile without the big bucks; that talented lads can be also good lads and have folks love them for what they are and what they do, not for how they show-off and brag. Muhammad Ali said that people always remember how you made them feel. Right? My countryman does more to help those in need, certainly more than the so-called government in Egypt does. Much more than any government does, for what matters. And you don't see it on social media because that's how much decent of a bloke he is. Football is just something he does. His support of those in need is his true calling. I only wish he could play at Anfield and stay in Liverpool for as long as possible because they deserve each other. My best wishes for the fellow who was due to surgery. May he recover and get well soon!

  • @Mokh_34632

Hands down he is much better than the legends on that list, if any of them had the same starting point as Salah they would have never ever made that list, actually they would have been still playing at a middle of the table club in Egypt forgotten by history, retiring at 33.
Salah didn’t get molded at young age by coaching legend like Ronaldo in United, he was not put in a cocoon like Messi in Barcelona. He came from sleeping on the football grounds not having the money to stay somewhere else.
He was rejected by Egypt’s second best clubs because he was not good enough for them …not even the best club.
No language, no role model to follow their steps, no advantage whatsoever expect his perseverance.
What he is doing is beyond legendary he is mythical, he came from a very very very deep valley to the top of the summit.
Eventually his form will dip and the goals will decline and the chants will fade but many will still remember the time when the Egyptian king ruled Liverpool.

You can't compare him with other players, because, every player is unique in their way of playing and approaching the game. You have to respect him as a player, well, since he is wearing the red shirt. In every generation of football players, there is always one unique player, Salah is one of those. It is always known, center forwards were always the one scoring goals, but with Salah being a winger, is rare. He is really under rated. Mo didn’t shy and with hard work he also proved that this bar could be reached and he did it times n times and got his game even better with those unreal assists.
I liked these gentlemen’s point about the stats guy who’s seeing records being broken. so by default you can’t replace a guy like that and start searching for someone to score goals! It’s not an easy task indeed no matter wat the ball f looked under his feet.
I remember nisterooy dribbling skills but who cares, he scored goals and ppl didn’t complain.
Mo’s football is very modern as it deals with stats cause it’s business after all and accomplished by fast pace attack and intelligently reading the field to predict empty spaces and clinically scoring goals.

The same can be said when I retrospect myself and how I view doak. No doubt he is a good footballer. Yet everytime i look at his face, I cannot seem to accept that he will be an exceptional footballer.

Absolutely. I always have said recently that Alisson is seriously overlooked by the football community. You can see the current Ballon D'or rankings which are anyways stupid especially ever since it has an evidence backed bias for Messi and against Ronaldo by some journalists admittance themselves. Although I disagree with the guy in the video saying Salah's ability is Ronaldo and Messi level. No one in this generation is anywhere close to them. He is though with Lewandowski's level and imo even above him.
People talk about Alisson being one of the best and great and all. But in overall gameplay, I would put him to be THE best goalkeeper of the world arguably and maybe only Neuer and few others have been arguably above him in recent years.

3 goals against in 4 fixtures, and that includes two Trent gaffs and two red cards. For all that they looked wobbly against Chelsea at times, so far the defense is in nearly title winning form. Allison 'effin Becker. He could have let in 3 more goals and nobody would have criticized.

@@_sayan_roy_ Yeah pity the Ballon D'or is weighted in favour of attacking players and trophies won, means the defensive players.. that are having a great season despite the rest of their team not pulling their weight and ultimately winning nothing get overlooked.

So many top players go for money these days ( not that Mo gets small paycheck) him staying over becoming the highest paid player ever and not forcing the move should put him up there with the legends for that alone. Look at Jordan, ran there at the first whistle. The captain him self! He could have stayed and be a part of the team even after retirement. But 💰 is more important, at least to him.

I think part of the reason he's still underrated is because of his nationality, And before anyone starts no I don't think it's anything to do with racism or skin colour.. I think if he was european or any other fancier nationality from south America he'd be held in higher regard. Seems be a common trend, other African players such as Mane who was always undervalued by the general media, even the likes of Eto and Drogba are.

    • @ComradeOgilvy1984
      @ComradeOgilvy1984 Před 8 měsíci

The African and ME players are a little less tuned into the European style game than the locals or most South American players do. What this means is most do not know how to decide very early and very quickly to go down soft like every English forward will. They get called divers literally because they are less quick to go down and fight to stay on their feet longer.

Anyone who says he should go next summer, why? he's still in early 30's, if the club kept gerrard and milner and they were fanatsic till mid 30's then why shouldn't that be the case for salah too?
why do people assume that someone is gonna decline once they hit 30 when clearly there are many evidence and players who gone on to win ballon d'ors in their 30's
is it a way to cope if the player has offers?
like come on, that kinda talk starts from 35 or older
messi is winning ballon d'ors in his 30's and maybe is gonna win another one at 36
benzema won one at like 34
ronaldo won a couple after 30
lewa was delivering ballon d'or worthy performances in 2020 and 2021 in his thirties
as a matter of fact the latest ballon d'ors winners have all been well over 30
so if anything, a player prime sometimes can start or continue in his 30s

Why I think Salah is underrated :
    1. He is not English
    2. He is not White
    3. He is not from a "footballing" country
    * if he was any of the above, we'd be having statues of him
    1. He has an impeccable character - rarely do you see him have a go at the ref
    2. His records are nothing less then incredible & and he keeps breaking them
    3. He is a consumate professional
    4. He really should have got a Ballon D'or
5, Produces moments of magic at any time in the game
    6. He is a Muslim / Glboal icon - and the man is incredibly grounded
    7. Consistency is his middle name (even when the rest are wilting).
Our refs are rotten, they do not provide him with the protection he deserves
(I mean Kane produces a red card tackle and gets away with it)
The amount of fouls on Salah and the ref fail and do not see it.
Given where he's come from and the sheer determination it has taken to get where he is that is nothing less then amazing.
I love Liverpool fans and have named him The Egypian King (we've known his greatness since he joined us).
We need to extend his contract and IF they choose to sell him NEXT or following Season - we can get 300mil and that is not asking for too much!
He is a unique and rare gem for us to keep!

When I saw the goals numbers you posted and saw Rush with 346 goals, I wondered of the level of expertise the competing teams at that time had the same competitiveness levels we have today - it's like spitfire competing with F22 - the scale needs to be somewhat similar or close to make the comparison.
Also, I HEAT people that rooted for Mo in his 18/19 season, and now spiting from their mouth condemnations agenest him just because he is not scoring as much as before - If one just looks at his team contributions, you will find Mo's performance getting the ball, maneuver it and pass it at the right time and place to make the score is phenomenal. ANY true fan would measure success from a TEAM performance and not one individual, let that be the coach's role.
Lastly, just imagine Liverpool without Mo then let us see how the SAME people talking agenest hi reacts... case closed.

As you say, It's just expectation. Success breeds a demand for more and I suppose that's what drives clubs forward in many respects. It can be negative but think of Madrid; their supporters don't accept defeat at all so they keep those standards at the level they should be
