What Causes Gum Recession and How To Treat It

- Gingival recession or gum recession can be caused by brushing the teeth too hard, too fast, or too frequently among other reasons. Receding gums may cause increased tooth sensitivity, a cosmetically compromised smile, decay, bone loss, and possibly tooth loss.

Oh man, did they ever lie to me when I was a kid. I was told to brush hard, for a long time and after every meal. I have exactly what you're describing. My dentist didn't do an operation with my gum tissue, he used that white bonding material to cover up the root and blend in with my teeth. Where were you when I was a kid?!
I think a lot of sadist were dentist in the ole days.

Why isn't this stuff taught in schools? I know of people that cant read and write properly after going to school for 10 years or so.
The Government doesn’t want a Intelligent Population.
One major problem is the dentists themselves. I move around a lot for work so I have to change dentists all the time. I have bad gum recession now. But NOT A SINGLE DENTIST I have seen over the past 40 years of my life ever said to me that my gyms need attention. Until I noticed my own gums and asked. Then he told me 'oh yes your gums are receding. You have thin gums. Be careful brushing.' DENTISTS! SPEAK UP!
Well I know for a fact I'm gonna be strict with my children on teeth hygiene.
I think a lot of people in this comment section including myself should remember that it’s never too late to reach out for help. I haven’t seen a dentist since I had 4 teeth pulled at once and oral surgery right after at about 13 years old and became terrified but I have to move forward and do what i need to. I hope everyone here knows that dentist and doctors aren’t here to judge us they only want to help and it’s never the worst they’ve ever seen.
Hi @Candy! Did you ever get the courage to go back to the dentist? I really hope so, and I hope they measured your gum pockets to make sure they’re still healthy. It’s so important to get regular check ups because things can be unhealthy without your knowing. ❤️
nice words my friend
My hygienist told me the best toothbrush to use for recession is a kids toothbrush! It certainly won't reverse the recession, nothing will, but you need to gently brush, and a kids brush works great! Just putting it out there. Hope it helps someone. I've used one, and it actually works better than the adult toothbrush.
I hate adult brushes. I was using a kids purple toothbrush that had compact bristle that were pretty soft.
My dentist told me the same thing. He's young but I am glad I have him.
I wish I learnt this decades ago. Having used electric brushes for long time, I only recently switched to an extra soft toothbrush for junior. Feeling much better. Damaged gum cannot be undone, hopefully not deteriorate any further.
I also use a kids toothbrush has slowed my recession dramatically
UGHHHHH I just bought ultra soft tooth brushes.... I wish I had seen this comment sooner.
The proper brushing of the teeth should be emphasized more in advertisements etc. because the vast majority of people think that more brushing means better teeth sth that can cause way more serious problems for the teeth in the long term.
G G all guys from toothpaste companies use pro gum paste and never paste for white teeth cuz they know ( I talked to them)
I agree there's khso much we should be taught from a young age to preve prevent the children many things one being how to properly tupyaje care of teeth
"take care of your baby, or you will regret it, and be in constant pain you get older like me" - one of the many pearls of wisdom we blew off as a child.
Excellent video ; I wish I learned about overbrushing 20 years ago. No dentist ever even hinted at it for a second
JB McNolan same. all they used to tell me is to brush twice a day and to make sure not to forget the gum too .. now that I know the gum can be traumatized after overbrushing .. Im going to quit brushing my gum and I would simply apply toothpaste on it and massage it in the right direction .. becauss I already have like 3 teeth where the gum started to move away
If they do that, then they'll be out of a job.
Mu dentist blamed it on smoking

Thank you for taking the time to educate others about gum recession. It is truly kind of you to take the time and energy to do so, sir. If I may, I have a few questions. I understand if you either don’t have the time or aren’t comfortable giving what could be construed to be medical/dental advice to someone you’ve never met, let alone examined. Nevertheless, I’m just going to ask:
Do you find electronic toothbrushes - specifically, the Philips’ Sonicare line of products - provide a thorough cleaning while reducing the risk of aggressive brushing? The instructions for every Sonicare brush I’ve ever owned advise the user to apply moderate to light pressure while brushing in an UP-DOWN fashion (as opposed to SIDE-to-SIDE as demonstrated in this video). Which is this the appropriate way to brush? Additionally, my Sonicare has a gum massage mode. Is there any evidence that supports either manual or mechanical gum massage can help prevent or even reverse mild gum recession?
I understand you cannot give me any medical or dental advice because I am not your patient nor have you had a chance to examine me. I expressly and unequivocally release you (or any other licensed or unlicensed persons) from any and all liability born from your response(s), if you indeed choose to respond. Furthermore, I expressly state any response(s) you (or others) choose to give will be regarded as entertainment; in no way whatsoever will any statement(s) from you or others replace the need to have these questions answered by my own dental care team.
Thank you!
Thanks Doc. When I have been told that my teeth are receding, they never explained why. You rock!
Joe, I loved your video. Nicely explained. From a colleague of yours in Vancouver, Canada (Tasso I.)
You are so right! I'm an 85 year old female and I had full tooth braces when I was very young. Also, the dentist always said to get the toughest brush possible and really give my teeth (after the braces were removed) the strongest brushing possible. Of course, I followed orders and now my poor gums have all receded and I probably won't be able to outlast them.
Well you did your best with the knowledge of your time! Most 85 year olds I know have no teeth at all. I wish you the best 🙌
Thank you so much for taking the time to explain this important issue 👍
I am so grateful for this info. Thank you for posting.
Thank you, Dr. Nemeth, for the extremely informative and helpful video. Easy to understand and to the point. Exactly what I was looking for to help me understand a bit more about how to properly brush my teeth.
Such a great video... very informative. I had such severe receding gums and my dentist told me the only thing that would help me was skin graphs. I freaked out and read everything I could get my hands on and came across oil pulling. Within 3 months it had healed my receding gumlines and my dentist was super surprised and happy for me. Keep up the good work!
Did your gums grow back?? Which oil helped you to heal receding gums?
@@divyad9144 I used coconut oil. I found Dr. Bronner's to be the best and yes my gums completely healed. They were very loose, inflamed, red, and receded down to the root. I oil pulled for 20 minutes 3 times a day and it took a fee weeks but my gums turned into the gums on teeth models from toothpaste commercials. 😊

Thanks Doctor for very valuable advice. You have explained very nicely about the reasons for gum pains, receding and cure. Very useful video. Thanks with smile . Thanks 😊
Thank you, you just confirmed what my dentist advised me on what kind of toothbrush I needed to purchase. For years I have used a soft to medium toothbrush. He also advised to use a kids soft toothbrush to reach the wisdoms and back molars as it is harder for the adult size toothbrush to them clean effectively. So now I use both daily, an adult soft toothbrush (sometimes an electric toothbrush) as well as a child's toothbrush. Oddly enough I watched Sesame Street as a child and I learnt how to brush in a circular motion each tooth.
Ok
Excellent video! I have been taught to always brush my teeth after every meal and I scrub them well. At the age of 43 now, I have gum recession. My root has been exposed, decayed, tooth broken, basically everything he described. Crowns to receding gums to root canals and more crowns. I really do wish I knew then what I know now, but, that's for us to pass on to our children and grandchildren. Thank you, Dr. Nemeth

DOC , TKS FOR THE GUM VIDEO !!

Absolutely fascinating for which I thank you.
Lucky to watch this at a young age, thanks doc :)
This is a very smart Hungarian doctor.
I believe the recession is more associated with clenching & grinding during one's sleep. Stress and malocclusion (uneven bite) can exacerbate this, resulting in uneven wear an often recession on some teeth more so than neighboring teeth, as evidenced in the pictures. Ask your dentist about a custom bite guard. Tooth brush abrasion, in my opinion, does not skip over neighboring teeth. Soft brushes are better than medium or hard since they gently flex to get below the gum line without typically harming the delicate gums. Harder brushes force the gums downward & may yield generalized recession. A good guideline: after a month your bristles should look brand new. If the bristles look bent or scrunched, then you are brushing too hard. If using an electric brush, allow it to go passively & without applying pressure at the gum line. BTW gum grafting will be effective only if the cause is addressed: clenching, uneven bite, missing teeth, perio disease, brush abrasions, high frenum muscle attachments. Your dentist can diagnose the cause& best solution.
My brother-in-laws gums were receding. I told him after brushing either with electronic or regular toothbrush, to use the reg toothbrush & with light strokes brush the top gum line down ie. put end of toothbrush to top of under lip & turn it to brush down. Do reverse to bottom teeth & brush upwards. When he went back to dentist the gum line went from 5 to 3! Much better!
Thank you very much doctor for that great info.
very well explained, thanks for going in to accurate detail.

Thanks doc. Great advice.
Excellent video.
I just started using a Curaprox 5460 toothbrush. It has a small head, many more bristles than other brushes and they’re super soft. I love it. I was guilty of brushing too hard. I also have a smaller mouth and the size of this brush is easier to get to the back teeth. I ordered online.
I never wanted to be a doctor, but I think I changed my mind, I wanna be a dentist (I’m 12)

My periodontist recommend salt washes to strengthen my gums. After 10 months of doing this twice daily, basically replacing my usual mouthwash with a saline solution, all of my really loose teeth are secure again. There are still several with slight movement but nothing like before when I thought I was going to loose them and my gums look healthier with less root exposed in some places.
Salt water really works?
Blahblah Blah, can you please tell us how much salt did you gargle everyday? Do you gargle with salt before brushing?
Wow, thank you for this. I have one tooth were the gum has receded and the dentist told me there was nothing I can do about it! Not that I have the money to do the grafting, but it's good to know there is a possibility of getting it fixed. Thank you!
Best of luck!

This is my theses topic sir 😊class 1recession coverage with CTG and A-PRF.
Good lord!! Had a consultation for this 1 week ago, walked out with an estimate of $3000 and horrified of the grafting procedure. Considering that it can lead to the loss of a tooth, I will most likely undergo the procedure. I'm giving myself 6 months to build up the courage!
HOLY SHIT wtf $3000 for a single tooth? Not fuckin worth it. I'd rather lose the tooth - FUCK THAT. I'll embrace my tooth gaps and own them like I'm the Queen B of periodontics. Unless you have insurance - then that's coo
i have an oral b electric toothbrush and it has a really good feature if i apply too much pressure it lights up red letting you know your using it with alot of pressure i love that brush and use interdental brushes so can clean between the teeth and i use as well morning an night i hope im doing things correctly xx

Thank you for the informative video 👍🏻 I take really good care of my teeth, brush and floss 2 to 3x a day but wore braces twice, 1x as a teenager and again as an adult because I didn’t wear my retainers like I should have and tend to brush too hard and was wondering why my gums were receding a bit. I wish I was advised of this by my dentist a long time ago. I went to the dental school to get my teeth cleaned and the dental hygienist told me the correct way I should be brushing and flossing my teeth just like in your demonstration here. Thank you, now I know 😉👍🏻
Ooops I forgot to add it was the student dental hygienist that showed me the correct way to brush and floss. It’s very important to know this especially the older you get !!
Hi!
Iwasn't bc you didn't wear your retainers . I wore mine diligently after my braces & here I am at 45 , my bottom teeth are crooked. My siblings had braces as well & my older brothers teeth are horrible. Sister is currently doing invisalign. The only one who has straight teeth still is my younger brother bc somehow he got a permanent retainer despite us all going to the same orthodontist! (Him & my sister are twins & did them at same time ). Unless a permanent retainer is given or worn FOREVER at night - teeth will shift, period . They want to go back to original position. It angers me how many dentists do not put on permanent retainers post braces - gee , maybe on purpose! I actually just took off My braces last wk. I had them on the bottom & I lasted 5 wks. I have TMJ so it's affecting my jaw & teeth kept shifting so w the braces - I was always in pain from my bite being off due to my tmj. In hindsight I made a rash decision to put on the braces thinking they were the answer but they weren't. I'm seeing an osteopath now who is working to correct my spine bc its curved & it's causing the tmj issues . Also have receding gums . When I was a teen they did a graph on my left lower gum , they botched me ! Good thing you can't see my gums when I smile as they put way too much graph on ( took it from roof of my mouth) & it looks like a big blob ! ... but my recession has been since childhood . 😢 I know grinding my teeth hasn't helped either as it causes gum recession.
Good work Brother. Bob from THE PLASTER GUYS
Thank you, Dr. Nemeth, I was worried about having gum disease, but my dentist keeps telling me I don't. She said I brushed too hard. Now that I have watched this, I feel more secure and will continue with my new, friendly brushing techniques without worrying.

Thank you for this video, Dr. Nemeth. My gums started receding a decade ago in my 20s & I had a gum graft. Unfortunately, it did not work. My dentist said it’s unusual for someone as young as myself to have receding gums. This really worries me. Is the new pinhole technique commonly used? What is the success rate for someone in which a gum graft did not take? I greatly appreciate your insights/comments.
please dont go for surgeries. start oil pulling. gum recession is basically due to germs. oil pulling kills all in mouth and gums heal so fast. m doing the same. u can use seame or coconut oil . one table spoon n add one drop clove essential oil. u ll notice the good results wothin weeks
@Buster Brown Many people have said that oil pulling works. It is absolutely worth a shot. Don't be arrogant.
@Buster Brown
Why would you say putting oil in your mouth is the worst advice? Yes, people should also go to their dentist regularly, but oil pulling can’t hurt, and it’s definitely worth a try, especially considering the fact that often, alternative therapies like this can do what the experts tell us can’t be done… I know from experience! I reversed level 5 gum pockets, that I was told were irreversible, in just a few weeks, by using a WaterPik containing grapefruit seed extract in the water (10 drops) with a Pik Pocket tip for five minutes daily (after having my gums scaled). ❤️
I have the same problem but i live in Singen Hohentwiel Germany.
Thank you
I was taught to buy a stiff brush and brush for a long time. It wasn’t until I was in my twenties I learned to use a softer brush. What turned me was a neighbor talking about how he brushed often with a hard bristled brush causing his gums to recede and fall out. Now I used a Sonicare and completely avoid working the gums.
I have this issue. I use to brush my teeth with a lot of force to get them as white as possible and my gums would get sore. Now I can see that my gum is wore out.
I thought you were great when you were a quarterback for the Jets!
I had gum recession caused by ckd. Also, after several months of eating nothing but macaroni, I got a massive amount of recession by three of my upper front teeth. I assume it was caused by a vitamin deficiency. I didn’t have money for nutritious food.
I had receding gums, loose and sensitive teeth and this is what fix my problems. Digestive enzymes, vitamin C, plant based calcium, magnesium, 5000 IU D3+K2, and 6mg boron and now my teeth are tight, strong and even some of the gum have gotten better. Using iodine in a water pic is good or you can just rinse with it to kill bacteria in the mouth.
Between the 80s and 90s, the dentist here in Sweden made tooth decays in children's teeth on purpose, and then said that we had to repair those tooth decays. (We call it holes in the teeth, they drilled holes in the root and then fixed/filled them). To earn more money. I was one of those children who became a victim, even though I had very nice and healthy teeth as a child. Now I have unnecessary tooth decays/holes in my teeth i have to go and fix each time a filling comes loose. Pricey, and it hurts like nothing else. I hope these people will burn in hell. If not, they'll most likely be reborn here on earth again and have to relearn everything all over again, which is love/light, light/love.
Thank you.
Thank you!
Although this is 9yrs old it is still of merit. Am 77m and have appt with a periodontist. Anticipate worst. Thank you.
I have a lot of recession and my new dentist wants to put bonding on the exposed roots. He says it will make the teeth stronger. Advice?
Hi nice video
Pls advice some techniques to avoid tooth decay .. as it’s coronavirus age dentists may not be available 🙁
I was always taught to "massage" my gums, top and bottom, with my fingertips after brushing to prevent gum recession and also clean my gums ?
I am trying oil and turmeric made into a paste and it seems to be helping!!
Which comes first? Is it the lack of bone surrounding the root or is it the lack of gum that causes the bone loss?
Very informative. And dam it, I've been brushing all wrong!! Never heard of taking tissue to repair gum recession. My dentist obviously needs to get up to date. Can imagine his face when I tell him next time, "Oh, no-no, you're doing it wrong." LOL
I was never taught about this either. So important, will make sure my future kids know. Luckily my teeth aren't that bad and I'm still fairly young, but there is some damage still. I feel like there's potential for new teeth cleaning innovation... there's so many stiff bristled toothbrushes, probably more than soft. Consumer ignorance is definitely there even though there's no reason it should be.
Maybe an infograph above all toothbrush stands would help, or PSA god I don't know lol. Why hasn't word of mouth solved this?
